  • The size and the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets were controlled by changing the oxidation temperature of graphite. Graphite oxide (GO) samples were prepared at different oxidation temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$, $27^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ using a modified Hummers' method. The carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio and the average size of the GO sheets varied according to the oxidation temperature: 1.26 and 12.4 ${\mu}m$ at $20^{\circ}C$, 1.24 and 10.5 ${\mu}m$ at $27^{\circ}C$, and 1.18 and 8.5 ${\mu}m$ at $35^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the C/O ratio and the average size of the graphene oxide sheets respectively increase as the oxidation temperature decreases. Moreover, it was observed that the surface charge and optical properties of the graphene oxide sheets could be tuned by changing the temperature. This study demonstrates the tunability of the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets and shows that the properties depend on the functional groups generated during the oxidation process.

  • Lateral confinement pressure generate improvements in strength and ductility of confined concrete. Carbon fiber sheets have a lot of merits, such as light weight, high strength and ease for construction, when it is applied to the defected structural member for the strengthening of shear and flexure. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the strength characteristics of the reinforced concrete column confined with carbon fiber sheets. The main variables in this test are concrete strength ($290kgf/cm^2$ called N type, $505kgf/cm^2$ called H type) and pre-loading. In the test, a total of twelve specimens, which were all $10{\times}10cm$ in size, 117 cm in length, have a 2.85 reinforcement ratio, have been used. The results indicate that the strength was enhanced 26%~30% in N type, 11%~16% in H type specimens which was confined with carbon fiber sheets.

  • Recently, the Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) is widely used to structure. But the behavior of the concrete column which is strengthened with the CFS is not clearly defined yet. This study presents the result of experimental studies on the stress-strain behavior and the strengthening effect of laterally confined concrete by Carbon Fiber Sheets(CFS) subject to compression. In this experimental study, included three-parameters, which are the number of the sheets, the laminated angle of sheets, and concrete strength.

  • Recently, strengthening of structural members by adhesion of steel plate or fiber sheets is generally used. Particularly, the Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS) is widely used. Rut, the strengthening effect of the CFS is not clearly define yet. Therefore, this paper is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of CFS methods by analyzing previous studies in statistics. According to the results, the maximum load carrying capacity is increased up to 0.16 times when the reinforced concrete beams were strengthened by CFS which is standard specimens. The number of sheets made some effect on the strength while, the other parameters influenced the ductile capacity.

  • A carbon-based hybrid resistor was fabricated using carbon nanotube (CNT) paste as an adhesive layer to establish electrically continuous ohmic contacts between CNT sheets and different CNT sheet or copper based metal alloy plates, and its electrical properties were evaluated. CNT sheets were fabricated using vacuum filtration with a CNT solution dispersed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solvent. The electrical characteristics of these carbon-based hybrid resistors were investigated. The CNT paste fulfilled the requirements for forming ohmic contacts between CNT sheets and metal alloy plates, which was attributed to the lowest work function difference and excellent wettability at the interface.

  • The Goss texture component of {110}<001> is well known as one of the best texture components to improve the magnetic properties of electrical steel sheets. The small amount of the Goss texture component is obtained at the surface of the steel sheet by shear deformation due to friction between the steel sheet and the roll during conventional symmetric rolling. This study aims to identify a method to obtain high intensity of the Goss texture component not only at the surface but in the whole layer of the steel sheet by shear deformation of asymmetric rolling. Low carbon steel sheets, which have different initial texture, were asymmetrically rolled by about 50%, 70%, and 80%. The pole figures of the top, center, and bottom layers of the initial and asymmetrically rolled low carbon steel sheets were measured by an X-ray diffractometer. Based on the measured pole figures of these samples, the intensities of the main texture components were analyzed for the initial and asymmetrically rolled low carbon steel sheets. As a result, the initial low carbon steel sheet with the γ-fiber component showed a higher intensity of the Goss texture component in the whole layer than the steel sheet with other texture components after asymmetric rolling.

  • Damaged steel-concrete composite girders can be repaired and retrofitted by epoxy-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets to the critical areas of tension flanges. This paper presents the results of a study on the behavior of damaged steel-concrete composite girders repaired with CFRP sheets under static loading. A total of seven composite girders made of I20A steel sections and 80mm-thick by 900mm-wide concrete slabs were prepared and tested. CFRP sheets and prestressed CFRP sheets were used to repair the specimens. The specimens lost the cross-sectional area of their tension flanges with 30%, 50% and 100%. The results showed that CFRP sheets had no significant effect on the yield loads of strengthened composite girders, but had significant effect on the ultimate loads. The yield loads, elastic stiffness, and ultimate bearing capacities of strengthened composite girders had been changed as a result of prestressed CFRP sheets, the utilization ratio of CFRP sheets could be effectively improved by applying prestress to CFRP sheets. Both the yield loads and ultimate bearing capacities had been changed as a result of steel beam's flange damage level and CFRP sheets could cover the girders' shortage of bearing capacity with 30% and 50% flange damage, respectively.

  • Alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets were prepared by calcining aluminum nitride powders under a mixed gas flow of carbon monoxide and argon. The graphene sheets were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The few-layer graphene sheets, which wrapped around the alumina particles, did not exhibit any diffraction peaks in the XRD patterns but did show three characteristic bands (D, G, and 2D bands) in the Raman spectra. The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) with the alumina particles wrapped in few-layer graphene sheets exhibited significantly improved overall energy-conversion efficiency, compared to conventional DSSC, due to longer electron lifetime.

  • An investigation was conducted into the flexural behavior of earthquake damaged reinforced concrete columns repaired with carbon fiber sheets. Six column specimens were tested to failure under reversed cyclic loading. Two columns were specimens for control with no sheets and tested. These columns were repaired with carbon fiber sheets and retested to evaluate the effect of the confinement of the carbon fiber on the damaged column. Another two columns were repaired and tested with no pre-cyclic loading. The test specimens were designed to model single bent under a constant axial force with reversed cyclic lateral loading. Carbon fiber sheets were used to repair damaged concrete columns in the critically stressed areas near the column footing joint and the physical, mechanical properties of carbon fiber sheets are described. The performance of repaired columns in terms of their hysteretic response is evaluated and compared to those of the original columns. The results indicate that the repaire technique with carbon fiber sheets is highly effective. Both flexural strength and displacement ductility of repaired columns were higher than those of the original columns.
