  • The effects of noradrenaline on the contractile and electrical activities were investigated using the circular muscle strips with intact mucosa prepared from the antrum and fundus of guinea-pig stomach. Electrical responses of circular muscle cells were recorded using glass capillary microelectrodes filled with 3 M KCI. All experiments were performed in tris-buffered Tyrode solution which was aerated with 100% $O_2\;and\;kept\;at\;35^{\circ}C$. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The spontaneous contractions recorded from the antral and fundic circular muscle strips with intact mucosa were suppressed dose-dependently by the application of noradrenaline, whereas those recorded from the mucosa-free strips were potentiated in a dose-dependent manner. 2) The inhibitory influences on the contractile activities in the normal intact strips were developed via both ${\alpha}-adrenoceptors\;and\;{\beta}-adrenoceptors$, while the excitatory influences in the mucosa-free strips resulted from the strong excitatory effect via ${\alpha}-adrenoceptors$ and the weak inhibitory effect via ${\beta}-adrenoceptors$. 3) Noradrenaline produced hyperpolarization of membrane potential, and increased the amplitude and the maximum rate of rise of slow waves in the mucosa-free strips of antral and fundic circular muscle. 4) Apamin blocked the appearance of the component of initial suppression of spontaneous phasic contractions observed in the mucosa-free strips of antral circular muscle after the application of noradrenaline. 5) The inhibitory influences on the contractile activities in the normal strips with intact mucosa remained unaffected even in the strip with separate mucosa, in which mucosa and muscle layer were mechanically disconnected . From the above results, following conclusions could be made. (1) There are no regional differences between the effects of noradrenaline on the antral circular muscle and those on the fundic circular muscle. (2) Excitatory responses to noradrenaline observed in the mucosa-free strip result from the dominant ${\alpha}-excitatory$ and tile weak ${\beta}-inhibitory$ action of noradrenaline. (3) Inhibitory responses to noradrenaline in the normal strips with intact mucosa develop via both ${\alpha}-inhibitory\;and\;{\beta}-inhibitory$ actions.

  • To increase the efficiency of a solar module, the development of solar concentrator using a lens or reflection plate is being proceeded actively and the concentrator pursues the a concentration using a lens or an optical device of a concentration rate and designing as a solar tracking system. On the other hand, as the energy density being dissipated as a heat according to the concentration rate increases, the cares should be taken to cool the solar concentrator to prevent the lowering of efficiency of solar cell by the increasing temperature of the solar cell. This study, researched and developed an economical concentrator module system using a low priced reflection optical device. A concentrator was used as a general module to increase the generation efficiency of the solar module and heat generated was emitted by the concentration through the cooling system. To increase the efficiency of the solar concentrator, the cooling system was designed and manufactured. The features of the micro cooling system (MCS) are a natural circulation method by the capillary force, which does not require external power. By using the potential heat in the case of changing the fluid, it is available to realize high performance cooling. The 117W solar modules installed on the reflective plate and the cooling device in the cooling module and the module unit was not compared. The cooling device was installed in the module resulted in a 28% increase in power output.

  • Anaerobic digestion is employed worldwide as the oldest and most important process for sludge stabilization. An additional advantage is the production of methane during anaerobic digestion. However, the waste activated sludge(WAS) has poor anaerobic degradability and less gas production due to the cell wall of bio-solid. In order to improve and enhance stabilization and dewatering of the WAS, a number of pretreatment processes have been developed and investigated. In this research, a pilot-scale study of pulse power pretreatment was performed to improve anaerobic degradability and dewaterability of the WAS. A pilot plant was designed and operated based on a previous laboratory study. Change of the sludge characteristics by pulse power pretreatment was estimated to assess the increasing soluble organics. The increased soluble organics could be used as a good substrate in the anaerobic digesion process. Gas production and methane potential of the anaerobic digestion were estimated as the parameters of anaerobic degradability. For evaluation of the dewaterability of pretreated WAS, capillary suction time(CST) and specific resistance were measured. The efficiency of energy recovery was also estimated by calculating energy balance.

  • This study investigated the corrosion properties of reinforced concrete with the addition of steel fibers. The transport properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete such as permeable void, absorption by capillary action, water permeability and chloride diffusion were first measured to evaluate the relationship with the corrosion of steel rebar. Test results showed a slight increase on the compressive strength with the addition of steel fibers as well as considerable improvement of penetration resistance to mass transport of harmful materials into concrete. The addition of steel fibers in reinforced concrete accelerated the initiation of steel corrosion contrary to the expected results based on the measured transport properties. The NaCl ponding surface showed the spalling failure due to the corrosion expansion of steel fibers and the cut-surface around the steel rebar showed the localized steel fiber's corrosion. The wet-dry cycling with high chloride ions as well as high temperature seems to induce the increase of salt crystallization on the pores continually and the increased pressure with the steel fiber's corrosion on the pores caused the spalling failure on the exposed surface. The microcracking on the surface therefore accelerated the movement of water, chloride ions and oxygen into the embedded steel rebar. The mechanism affecting corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement with steel fibers in this study are not yet fully understood and require further study comprising of accurate experimental design to isolate the effect of steel fiber's potential mechanism on the corrosion process.

  • Background : A presumptive histopathologic diagnosis of tuberculosis is commonly based on the finding of acid-fast bacilli upon microscopic examination of a diagnostic specimens. Although this traditional histochemical staining method is satisfactory, it is time-consuming and not species-specific. For more specific assessment, in situ hybridization assay with oligonucleotide probes is introduced. Methods : The human surgical specimens were obtained from tuberculosis patients, and experimental specimens were made by injecting cultured M. tuberculosis organisms into fresh rat liver. Oligonucleotide probes complementary to ribosomal RNA portion were synthesized and labeled with multiple biotin molecules. For a rapid detection, all procedures were carried out using manual capillary action technology on the Microprobe staining system. Results : The in situ hybridization assay produced a positive reaction in experimental specimens (80-90% sensitivity) after pepsin-HCl pre-treatment for a good permeabilization of probes, but reliable result was not obtained from human surgical specimens. Conclusion : It is, therefore, suggested that biotin-labeled oligonucleotide probes have considerable potential for identification and in situ detection of M. tuberculosis but, there are some barriers to overcome for the diagnostic use of this method.

  • Hataedock is a Korean medical treatment that administers herbal extracts orally to newborn infants. This method is used for alleviating harmful heat and excreting fetal wastes by meconium. The purpose of this study was to evaluate anti-inflammatory effect of Hataedock method with Douchi on 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD). The 3-week-old NC/Nga mice were divided into 3 groups: the control group (Ctrl), the AD-induced group (AE), and the Hataedock-treated group (GT). Only the GT group was treated with Hataedock at the 3rd week. After 28 days from Hataedock treatment, we induced AD-like dermatitis to the AE and GT group by DNFB. The effects of Hataedock were evaluated by immunohistochemical method. In the epithelium, PKC-positive reaction of the GT group was decreased by 57%. In the dermal papillae, IL-4-positive reaction was decreased by 34%. In the dermis, the distribution of degranulated mast cells was decreased and substance P-positive reaction was decreased by 49%. In the skin tissue, edema was decreased and MMP-9-positive reaction was decreased by 71%. Tissue damage such as epithelial cell hyperplasia, infiltration of granulocyte and lymphocyte, and capillary distribution were also decreased. The Hataedock method with Douchi maintained skin barrier and inhibited skin-damaging factors via regulating Th2 differentiation. In conclusion, Hataedock has a potential for preventative treatment of AD. Further studies are necessary to investigate the immune-regulating mechanism and verify the safety and efficacy of the Hataedock method.

  • Flos Sophorae, the dried flower bud of Sophora japonica L, possesses anti-inflammatory properties, prevents and treats blood capillary and hypertension diseases and can also be used as a hemostat. However, the effect of Flos Sophorae on breast cancer invasion is unknown. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which degrades the extracellular matrix, is a major component in cancer cell invasion. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of Flos Sophorae extract (FSE) on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression and cell invasion, as well as the molecular mechanisms involved in Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cells. FSE inhibited the TPA-induced transcriptional activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-${\kappa}B$). These results indicate that FSE-mediated inhibition of TPA-induced MMP-9 expression and cell invasion involves the suppression of NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway in MCF-7 cells. Thus, FSE may have therapeutic potential for controlling breast cancer invasiveness.

  • The crude galactomannans (GMs) were obtained from the culture of a newly isolated fungus Trichoderma erinaceum DG-312 and their anti-inflammatory activity was investigated in mice. The maximum concentrations of mycelial biomass and GMs reached 9.44 g/l, 2.72 g/l at day 3 in a 5-l stirred-tank bioreactor, respectively. The results of Sepharose CL-6B gel chromatography and compositional analysis revealed that the crude GMs contain heterogeneous polysaccharides consisting of $74.9\%$ mannose and $24.1\%$ galactose. The GMs was shown to possess a significant anti-inflammatory activity against acetic acid-induced inflammatory mouse model in a dose-dependent manner, when mice were treated with 100 and 200 mg GMs/kg body weight. The inhibition in vascular permeability $(60.6\%)$ and in writhing response $(62.5\%)$ evidenced an anti-inflammatory activity of the GMs. The marked anti-inflammatory and writhing-lowering properties of the GMs suggest its potential therapeutic use.

  • Hemangiopericytoma is a rare neoplasm that originates from small peri-capillary spindle shaped cells called pericytes. The most common sites of origin are the thigh, the pelvis and the retroperitoneum. A primary pulmonary hemangiopericytoma is particularly unusual. However, more than 50% of hemangiopericytoma cases metastasize to the lungs, the bone, and the liver. A long-term clinical and radiological follow up is recommended due to the high risk of recurrence of a potential malignancy. We report a case of a metastatic hemangiopericytoma in the lung that had initially developed in the thigh of a 53 year-old woman 6 years ago. The authors emphasize the long-term follow-up of this type of rare sarcoma.

  • Ciliates have the possibility of a new live food in marine finfish culture because of their wide range of body size, thin tell wall, show motility, and fast reproduction rate. In this research, six species of ciliates were isolated from south coast and salt pond in Korea. The fitness of these species as a live food was evaluated in terms of size, motility, suspensibility and cell density. As the result, Euplotes sp. (K-1) was found suitable to be a new live food which might substitute rotifers, Brachionus plintilis and B. rotundiformis in fish larvae culture. The modified $F{\emptyset}yn's$ Erdschreiberd media, MErds-2 with the addition of glycine, glucose and yeast extract increased six times higher growth rate of Euplotes sp. (K-1) than the basic F$\emptyset$yn's Erdschreiberd media. The optimum water temperature, pH and light intensity for this ciliates were $22.5^{\circ}C$, 8 and 2,000 lux, respectively, and its culture environmental range was relatively wide, On the other hand, this ciliate fed baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cererisiae grew up to 1,240 inds./mL with the inocula of 100 inds./mL within 7 days. The results of the study showed that Euplotes sp. (K-1) has a potential to be utilized as a new live food in fish larvae culture.
