  • The purpose of this paper is to confirm the trend of inland water fish farming in North Korea and to suggest a plan for inter-Korean cooperation. North Korea's inland water fish farming laid the foundation for production in the 1950s and 1960s, and production facilities were expanded until 1980. In the midst of the severe economic crisis in the 1990s, North Korea paid attention to inland water fish farming as an alternative to food production. The military took the lead in expanding the aquaculture industry and catfish farming was encouraged. In the Kim Jong-un era, North Korea's inland fish farming continues the tradition of catfish farming and promotes a policy of expanding inland cage farming. This study comprehensively reviewed recent inter-Korean relations, North Korea's food crisis and acceptability, and UN sanctions. As a result, inland water fish farming is the most promising field for inter-Korean cooperation in the field of fisheries. In the initial stage of inter-Korean cooperation in the field of inland water fish farming, humanitarian aid projects such as feed and seed support can be promoted. In the stage of expanding inter-Korean cooperation, knowledge sharing program and materials and facilities support projects can be promoted. Development cooperation and direct private investment are possible at the full-scale stage.

  • This paper analyzed economic feasibility of aquacultural construction which of large-scale. The results of the economic analysis, cage cultural and water recycling cultural by post-water treatment were analyzed that NPV is 2,083,685 thousand won and -14,105,896 thousand won and B/C ratio is 0.590 and 0.855, respectively. These were shown economic infeasibility. But, running water culture by pre-water treatment(small scale) and running water culture by pre-water treatment(large scale) were analyzed that the one is 5,555,747 thousand won and 15,048,589 thousand won and the other is 1,154 and 1,1221, respectively. these were shown economic feasibility. In addition, measurement of B/C ratio through a sensitivity analysis on running water cultural by pre-water treatment(small scale) and running water cultural by pre-water treatment(large scale) is economic feasibility in all cases. However, these were analyzed when the selling price was falling to 20 percent, it has shown economic infeasibility and when the selling price rises to 20 percent, water recycling culture by post-water treatment has economic feasibility. The significance of the study analyzed a sensibility as well as economic feasibility by methods and scales. It is expected that used as basic materials when constructing and operating of land aquaculture in order to minimize the damage from natural disasters.

  • Four experimental diets were formulated to contain white fish meal (WFM) andvor BAIFA-M as the main animal protein source to determine the optimum BAIFA-M level to replace WFM protein. The diets contained 100% WFM + 0% BAIFA-M in the diet M$_0$ (control) . 70%, WFM+30%, BAIFA-M in the diet M$_{30}$, 55 % WFM+45 % BAIFA-M in the diet M$_{45}$, ; 40 % WFM+60 % BAIFA-M in the diet M$_{60}$. The four groups of rockfish (232 g), receiving the four different diets, were fed for 8 weeks. Groups receiving M$_0$, M$_{30}$ and M$_{45}$/ diets did not show significant (P>0.05) difference in growth and feed efficiency; however, the group fed on M$_{60}$/ showed significantly slower growth and lower feed efficiency than the others. Body composition showed no significant difference among the four dietary groups. WFM protein can be replaced by BAIFA-M up to 45 % in the diet of the rockfish.

  • New Paint, Stapol N-6200D, products from Song Woun Industrial Co. Ltd., was tested on its chemical effect on fouling organisms attached to fishing nets. Two kinds of fishing nets with different mesh size, 5 mm (cage culture net) and 33 mm (set net) were painted and attached to $1m^2$ PVC quadrates. The quadrates with painted or non-painted fishing nets were placed at the surface water layer of southern coast of Korea. Monthly species composition and abundance of fouling organisms were analysed as well as total weight of fouling organisms including mud on fishing nets. On the other hand, anti-fouling effect of the organisms and mud on different color paints was studied and the durability of chemical effect of painted fishing net on fouling organisms was also estimated.

  • As one of the red tide control method, montmorillonite was used to eliminate the causative organisms in Korea and Japan. We assayed the loess to replace the montmorillonite because it distribute in large quantity and nearby the red tide occurrence in South Coast of Korea. By using the mixture of loess and coal ashes, we examined the decreasing level of nutrients such as ammonia and phosphate, the elimination of causative organisms as a chlorophyll a content, and the harmful effect on aquaculture orgarnisms in cage culture farms. Half of the ammonium and phosphate was adsorbed by the loess particles, but only $25\%$ of ammonium was adsorbed by the coal ashes particles. In water column test, the particles of loess and coal ashes were settled down by $80\%$ in 20 minutes, the red tide organisms was eliminated by $80\%$ after 2 hours in 1,000 ppm of loess suspension, but the organisms were eliminated only $30\%$ by the same concentration of coal ashes. The harmful test of fishes and invertbrates, we observed any other negative effects of test animals than a tint deceleration in yellowtail.

  • Growth Comparisons of two age groups of coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, underyearling and age one, were made at Chungmu Experimental Fish Culture Station from December 17, 1988 to April 26, 1989. During the first 66 days of experimental period, the fish of underyearling group grew from 167.0 g to 633.1 g in average weight and the feed coefficient (FC) and daily growth rate (DGR) were 1.1 and $2.0\%$, respectively. In the same period, the fish of age one group grew from 396.0 g to 854.6 g in average weight and the FC and DGR were 1.1 and $2.0\%$, respectively. During the second 63 days, the fish of underyearling and age one group grew up to 1171.9 g and 1239.7 g respectively. FCs of these two groups were 1.5 and 2.6, respectively and DGRs were $1.0\%$ and $0.7\%$, respectively. Underyearling fish consumed more feed and performed better FC and DGR than age one fish. FC and DGR sharply decreased as the fish weight increased. Therefore under-yearling fish of this species seems better as seeds for seawater cage culture. For this purpose it is necessary to increase smolting rate in the underyearling group fish within a single season.

  • It is necessary to study the material circulation of coastal ecosystem according to aquacultural activity in order to induce the sustainable production of aquaculture and the fishery environment for the useful use. Hence, it is essential to make an exact assessment for the sedimentation release flux at the sediment-water interface in the aquafarm. Sediment oxygen demand and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were compared using in-situ and laboratory incubational examination. Sediment oxygen demands were 116, 34, and $31\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 52, 17, and $15\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were 7.18, 7.98, and $1.78\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 3.33, 3.74, and $1.96\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) at Tongyeong finfish, Yeosu finfish, and Wando abalone cage farms, respectively. Consequently, in-situ incubation results showed two times higher than laboratory examination. We compared the material flux at the sediment-water interface of each farm and the characteristics between two different kinds of material flux examination.

  • Recently, copper alloy netting has been proposed as a material for aquaculture facilities that can be set in harsh offshore environments. To design a cage made of copper alloy netting, it is necessary to calculate the flow of water through the netting and force of external sources on the netting. Therefore, this study measured and analyzed the current velocity reduction after passing through the netting and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the netting using copper alloy netting with nine solidity ratios. As a result of the reduction rate of the flow velocity through the netting, the flow reduction rate was increased as the solidity ratio of netting was increased. The flow reduction rate was also increased as the attack angle on the netting was decreased. In analyzing the resistance on the netting, we also discovered that resistance was increased with increase in the flow velocity and solidity ratio. An analysis of the hydrodynamic coefficient acting on the netting is shown that the drag coefficient tends to increase as the attack angle increases. We also analyzed the hydrodynamic coefficient according to the variation of the Reynolds number. When the drag coefficients acting on the netting were analyzed with the different Reynolds numbers, the Reynolds number increased from over 0.3 m/s to a relative constant. Finally, the copper alloy nettings had a smaller velocity reduction rate when comparing the flow velocity reduction rate between copper alloy nettings and nylon nettings.

  • The effects of night-lights on feeding by the black rockfish Sebastes inermis in the cage of the Tongyeong marine ranching area were investigated by analyzing the stomach contents of 200 individuals from July 2004 to August 2004. In night-lights groups, black rockfish consumed mainly copepoda, amphipoda and polychaeta; also those in control area fed on copepods, amphipods and polychaets. Copepods (57%) and amphipods (32%) were the major prey organisms for all study period in night-lights. While, major prey items in control area were copepods (88%). Growth of the black rockfish reared in night-lights conditions were significantly higher than that of those in control area.

  • Growth performance and excretions of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were investigated with carp (Cyprinus carpio) with carp (Cyprinus carpio) grower fed a low pollution diets (A and B) and commercial ones (Com-1 and Com-2). A recirculated rearing system (Exp. I) and a floating net cage system (Exp. II) were employed for two feeding trials in which fish having an initial body weight of 152g and 193g were fed for 41 an 39 days, respectively. The highest weight gain, daily growth rate and protein efficiency ratio were found (P<0.05) in fish fed diet A containing 10% fish meal and 2% monocalcium phosphate (MCP) for both experiments. They also showed the lowest feed conversion ratio and daily feeding ration among treatments. Fish fed diet B containing 10% fish meal, 5% fish protein concentrate and 1% MCP showed weight gain and FCR more improved (P<0.05) than those fed commercial diets. In all groups, whole body cmpositions were not greatly different among treatment, and protein and P contents in final fish ranged from 14.3 to 15.6% and from 0.39 to 0.48%, respectively. Fish fed diet A excreted the least N which were 38.3 in Exp. I and 39.6g/kg gain in Exp. II. However, the values found in fish fed two commercial diets amounted to 59.1 and 58.9g, respectively. A significant decrease in P excretion was also found in fish groups fed diets A and B. In Exp. I, a reduction of 53.4% was shown in fish fed diet A, compared to the averaged value (18.5g P/kg gain) of two commercial groups. In Exp. II conducted using the floating net cages, fish fed diet B excreted the least P (8.6g/kg gain) among the treatment, which was followed by fish fed diet A, showing 48.6% reduction compared to the average value (18.5g/kg gain) for fish fed two commercial diets. The present results clearly showed that N and P excretions from fish culture could be significantly reduced by using the low pollution diet.
