The plant Quisqualis indica (Compositae) has ehnopharmcological reputation of being used as a healing agent in Bangladesh. In this study, preliminary screenings were conducted to look at the antimicrobial susceptibility and cytotoxicity of the plant extract. The extractives of the plant were subjected to screening for inhibition of microbial growth by the disc diffusion method. The zones of inhibition demonstrated by the n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates of the methanolic extract ranged from 8 - 15 mm, 8 - 18 mm, 12 - 20 mm and 10 - 16 mm, respectively at a concentration of 400 ${\mu}g$/disc. All the extractives were also subjected to brine shrimp lethality bioassay for primary cytotoxicity evaluation. Here, the carbon tetrachloride soluble materials demonstrated the highest cytotoxicity with $LC_{50}$ of 0.826 ${\mu}g$/ml, while n-hexane, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates of the methanolic extract revealed the $LC_{50}$ of 1.254, 3.866 and 5.366 ${\mu}g$/ml, respectively. This is the first report of the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity Q. indica.
A series of aqueous or methanol extracts from four different Korean salad plants were assayed to determine their allelopathy and antioxidant activity. The extracts applied on filter paper in a Petri-dish bioassay significantly inhibited root growth of against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) seedlings. Leaf extracts from 40 g dry tissue $L^{-1}$ of Aster yomena was most phytotoxic to alfalfa root growth, and followed by that of Cirsium japonicum, Taraxacum officinale, and Ixeris dentate. Methanol extracts of plants dose-dependently increased DPPH free radical scavenging activity in vitro. Antioxidant activity of methanol extracts from the same plant species was investigated, and the result showed high DPPH free radical scavenging activity in Cirsium japonicum, Aster yomena, and Ixeris dentate, however, in Taraxacum officinale was least activity. By means of HPLC analysis, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, and total phenolics with 7.68, 17.47 and 18.64 mg, $100g^{-1}$, respectively, showed the highest amounts in methanol extracts from Cirsium japonicum leaves. These results suggest that Compositae salad plants contain water-soluble substances with allelopathic potential as well as antioxidant activity.
A new oxygenated monoterpene (4) was isolated from the methanol extract of the aerial part of Erechtites hieracifolia together with six known components, a dimethylheptane (1), three ionone derivatives (2, 3 and 7) and two phenylpropanoids (5 and 6). Their structures were identified by means of physico-chemical and spectral data to be (2E, 5E)-6-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylhepta-2,4-dienal (1), 3(R)-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-$\beta$-ionone (2), 3(R)-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-7-ionol (3), (3E, 6E)-3,7-dimethylocta-3,5-dien-1,2,7-triol(4), 2-hydroxy-4-(2-propenyl)phenyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (5), 2-methoxy-4-(2-propenyl)phenyl -$\beta$-D-glucopyra-noside (6) and (6R, 9R)-3-oxo-$\beta$-ionol-$\alpha$-D -glucopyranoside (7).
Five terpenes (1~5), three fatty acids (6~8), two sterols (9 and 11), and a monogalactosyldiacyl glycerol (10) were isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the aerial part of Cirsium setidens. Their chemical structures were determined to be $\alpha$-tocopherol (1), 25-hydroperoxycycloart-23-en-3$\beta$-o1 (2), 24-hydroperoxycycloart-25-en-3$\beta$-o1 (3), mokko lactone (4), transphytol (5), 9, 12, 15-octadecatrienoic acid (6), 9, 12-octadecadienoic acid (7), hexadecanoic acid (8), acylglycosyl $\beta$-sitosterol (9), (2R)-1, 2-O-(9z, 12z, 15z-dioctadecatrienoyl)-3-O-$\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl glycerol (10) and $\beta$-sitosterol glucoside (11) by spectral evidences. Compound 3 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against five human cancer cell lines with its $ED_{50}$ values ranging from 2.66 to 11.25 $\mu$M.
This study investigated native Rubus coreanus community in Korea(Ulleung island and Jeju island excepted). The quadrates were located in the middle of the native Rubus coreanus habitats. As the result of the research, the patter of native habitats were found to be divided into mountain roadsides, second-transition rents, severely damaged rents in the mountain, strictly protected regions, and environmentally harsh regions. The research revealed 218 taxa in total, in which 71 families, 165 genera, 18 varieties,1 forma and 199 species were checked in the flora of the native Rubu coreanus habitats. In this flora, the perennial plants appeared in as much as 80.74% proportion and appearance-frequency of the compositae was highest, accounting for 7.80%.

In this study, we isolated scopoletin from Cirsium setidens Nakai (Compositae) and tested its effects on melanogenesis. Scopoletin was not toxic to cells at concentrations less than $50{\mu}M$ and increased melanin synthesis in a dose-dependent manner. As melanin synthesis increased, scopoletin stimulated the total tyrosinase activity, the rate-limiting enzyme of melanogenesis. In a cell-free system, however, scopoletin did not increase tyrosinase activity, indicating that scopoletin is not a direct activator of tyrosinase. Furthermore, Western blot analysis showed that scopoletin stimulated the production of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase expression via cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation in a dose-dependent manner. Based on these results, preclinical and clinical studies are needed to assess the use of scopoletin for the treatment of vitiligo.
There are a large number of bioactive sesquiterpene lactones from compositae plants including Hemistepita lyrata Bunge. In the present study, we purified two sesquiterpene lactones, Hemistepsin A and B, from H. lyrata and evaluated their antimicrobial activities against Malassezia obutusa. Chromatographic separation was used for the preparation of Hemistepsin A and B, and the identity of these compounds was confirmed by NMR. Strong inhibition of growth of M. obutusa was obtained with all doses of Hemistepsin A tested. Moreover, antifungal activity of Hemistepsin A occurred in a dose-dependent manner. Hemistepsin B also showed potent antifungal activity at the dose of $800{\mu}m/disc$. From these results, it was suggested that Hemistepsin A and B be beneficial for the preparation of the useful agent for treating scalp diseases occurred by dandruff-causing Malassezia species.
This study is carried out through ecological situation of native Bupleurum latissimum habitats and the research of environmental conditions for conservation of native sites, restoration of alternative habitats and preliminary data for application of useful medicinal plant. Native Bupleurum latissimum habitats were distributed on lower and middle part of the mountain from Altitude 54m to 185m, and the directions of slope were researched as usually northen and western slope. As a result of phytosociological research in 12 stands of native Bupleurum latissimum habitats, they were seperated to two communities(Bupleurum latissimum typical community and Bupleurum latissimum-Galium spurium community) in accordance with containable rate of the organic matter and soil hardeness. Soil condition is usually constituted as loamy sand and clay loam. Bupleurum latissimum is propagated in valuable soil conditions. Bupleurum latissimum lives with Morus bombycis, Reynoutria sachalinensis in Bupleurum latissimum typical community and Thalictrum aquilegifolium, Stellaria media, Hedera rhombea etc. is appeared with Bupleurum latissimum in Bupleurum latissimum-Galium spurium community. Especially, companion species were researched as Aster glehni, Dystaenia takeshimana and so on. The flora of vascular plants in this study is 44 families, 88genus 82species, 2 subspecies, 14 varietas, 4 forma and total 102 taxa. Plants of compositae occupied 10.78% among whole of them.
The plant origines of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba and Atractylodis Rhizoma are genus Atractylodes*Compositae). Their origines in pharmacopoeia are slightly different among Korea, Japan, North Korea and China. The species of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba are Atrctylodes japonica $K_{OIDZ}$. A. ovata $T_{HUNB}$.. Atractylodis Rhizoma are A. lancea DC., A. chinensis DC. and A. koreana $K_{ITM}$. But the texonomic genealogy of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba is different from that of Atractylodis Rhizoma. The herbal origines of Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba and Atractylodis Rhizoma were not different at the early days. Since Tao-Hong-Jing(陶弘景) distinguished between Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba and Atractylodis Rhizoma at the very beginning, theri medicinal usages are different, Atractylodis Rhizoma have been used to remove pathogenic dampness in the digestive organs and Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba have been used to invigorate the digestive system and replenish qi. In additions, the figures and historical records of herbal appearance are different between Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba and Atractylodis Rhizoma. The diagnostics of them are in accord with the texonomic genealogies.
