Effects of Practical Variations in Fasting, Stress and Chilling Regime on Post-slaughter Metabolic Rate and Meat Quality of Pork Loin (절식, 스트레스 및 냉각속도가 돼지도체의 사후 대사속도와 등심근의 육질에 미치는 영향)

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effects of practical variations in feed restriction, pre-slaughter handing and chilling regime on pork quality during ageing. A total of twenty male landraces were allocated into three treatments(i.e., pre-slaughter feeding, stress and chilling regime) in a factorial arrangement. pH, temperature, free calcium ions, WB-shear force, sarcomere length, cooking loss, drip loss and objective color were determined during rigor development and/or 1, 3, 7 d postmortem. Pre-slaughter chasing stress for approximately 15 min had no effects on pH/temperature profile and objective meat quality. There was an interaction(P < 0.05) between the fasting treatment and chi1ling regime for muscle temperature at pH 6.2. Sarcomere length indicated that the current experiment conditions did not induce muscle shortening, with 1.7 to 1.8 ${\mu}m$, in spite of a significant effect of the fasting treatment (P<0.01). Pigs fed until the morning of slaughter showed a low WB-shear force(P < 0.05) until 3 d at I "C. The treatment also resulted in a higher Hunter L* and a*(P < 0.05) at 24 h and 7 d. Fasted pigs showed a significantly(P < 0.05) reduced cooking loss. The current results indicated that feeding upon the morning of slaughter became detrimental on meat color and the negative effect on cooking loss were linearly elevated with increased ageing time. On the other hand, WB-shear force did not distinguishable after 3 d. Collectively, it appeared that feed restriction from a day before slaughter could produce more a desirable meat quality at the time of consuming. However, the limited effect of animal handling and chilling rate on meat quality is not necessarily to extend to that these do not affect pork quality, as that largely depends on experimental design.

Disposal Possibility of Raw Food Wastes Using Earthworm, Eisenia andrei (지렁이를 이용한 생 음식물쓰레기 체리 가능성)

  • Disposal possibility of raw food wastes which have various characters without any washing and composting process was tested directly using the earthworm, Eisenia andrei. The amount of feeding treatment a day by the earthworm was investigated according to input amount of 1.5 kg/m$^2$ or 3.0 kg/m$^2$ of fifteen food wastes with the different pH and EC. Earthworm disposed an average of 0.87 kg/m$^2$/day of food wastes at the constant temperature of 15$^{\circ}C$ and 1.01 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. The most disposal among fifteen food wastes was the food waste with pH 5.3 and EC 17.7 as 1.59 kg/m$^2$/day at 15$^{\circ}C$ and as 1.63 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. The least disposal was the food waste with pH 3.9 and EC 17.7 as 0.31 kg/m$^2$/day at 15$^{\circ}C$ and as 0.53 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. It took an average 4 days to dispose the amount of 3 kg raw food wastes at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 3.3 days at 2$0^{\circ}C$.

Estimation of PCDD/Fs Concentrations in Ambient Air Using Pine Needles as a Passive Air Sampler (PAS) (소나무 잎을 PAS로 이용하여 대기 중 PCDD/Fs 농도 추정)

  • Objective: This study was carried out to use pine needles as a passive air sampler (PAS) for atmospheric polychlorinared dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs). Methods: PCDD/Fs concentrations in ambient air ($C_a$, $pg/m^3$) and deposited pine needles ($C_p$, pg/g dry) were analyzed simultaneously from June 1 to December 31. Air samples were taken using two low volume PUF active air samplers with an overall average air volume of approximately $1,200Sm^3$. Pine needles were collected the end of December near the air sampler. PCDD/Fs was analyzed by HRGC/HRMs. Results: A good correlation was shown ($R^2=0.6357$, p=0.0001) between $C_a$ and $C_p$, but a better correlation ($R^2=0.7372$, p<0.0001) existed between the logarithm of octanol-air partitioning coefficient ($LogK_{oa}$) and Log($C_p/C_a$). The average PCDD/Fs sampling rates from air to pine needles were 0.045($0.018-0.185m^3/day-g\;dry$). Conclusion: It was found that pine needles can be used as PAS for atmospheric PCDD/Fs, and they are especially suitable for long time PAS compared to PUF disk PAS.

Inhibition of Cell Proliferation and Migration by miR-509-3p That Targets CDK2, Rac1, and PIK3C2A

  • CDK2 is a key regulator of cell cycle progression. In this study, we screened for miRNAs targeting CDK2 using a luciferase-3'-untranslated region reporter assay. Among 11 hit miRNAs, miR-509-3p reduced CDK2 protein levels and significantly inhibited cancer cell growth. Microarray, Western blotting, and luciferase reporter analyses revealed additional targets of miR-509-3p, including Rac1 and PIK3C2A. Overexpression of miR-509-3p induced G1 cell-cycle arrest and inhibited colony formation and migration. RNAi experiments indicated that the growth-inhibitory effects of miR-509-3p may occur through down-regulation of CDK2, Rac1, and PIK3C2A. Targeting of multiple growth regulatory genes by miR-509-3p may contribute to effective anti-cancer therapy.

  • In this paper, an effective ionization coefficient for 4H-SiC is extracted in the form of c .E$^{m}$ from ionization coefficients of electron and hole. Analytical expressions for critical electric field and breakdown voltage of 4H-SiC p$^{+}$n junction are derived by employing the effective ionization coefficient. The analytic results agree well with the experimental ones reported within 10% in error for the doping concentration in the range of 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$ ~10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ . .

  • P+N and P+NN+ solar cells with the area of 3.36 $\textrm{cm}^2$ were fabricated by thermal diffusion. Under the light intensity of 100 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$, total area(active area) conversion efficiency was 13.4%(14.7%) for P+N cell fabricated by 15 min boron predeposition at 94$0^{\circ}C$ and 20 min annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$, and 14.3%(15.6%) for P+NN+ cell processed by 15 min boron predeposition at 94$0^{\circ}C$ and 50 min annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$ after 20 min back phosphorus diffusion at 1,05$0^{\circ}C$. The minority carrier lifetime in bulk of P+NN+ cells was increased about 2~3 times comparing with P+N cells because of guttering and BSF effect due to back phosphorus doping. The methods used for efficiency improvement were AR coating, Ag electroplating, back doping and fine grid pattern as well as the control of front doping profile.

  • Analyses of $_1$H-NMR, infrared and electronic spectral data for $[Ir(CH_2 = CHCN)(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3)_2]ClO_4 (1)$prepared by the reaction of $Ir(OClO_3)(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3)_2$ with $CH_2 = CHCN$, agree with the suggestion that 1 is a mixture of the nitrogen-bonded acrylonitrile complex, $[(CO)(P(C_6H_5)_3)_2Ir-NCCH = CH_2]ClO_4$ and other compound which may be the C = C ${\Pi}$ -system-bonded acrylonitrile complex, "[(CO)(P(C6H5)3)2Ir-CHCN = CH2]ClO4.

Study on Sensory Papillae of Metagonimus yokogawai Cercaria (Metagonimus yokogawai 세르카리아의 감각유두에 관한 연구)

  • A number of studies on the papillae of cercariae of trematodes reported that the papillar patterns (or chaetotaxy) of cercariae might be an excellent method to attain better understanding of the digenetic trematodes (Richard, 1971 ; Short and Cartrett, 1973; Bayssade-Dufour, 1979) . The present study was aimed to determine the number, distribution pattern and structure of the sensory papillae of Metagonimus yokogawai cercariae, and to elucidate the chaetotaxy of this digenetic trematode. M. yokogawai cercariae were pipetted from a vial in which infected snails (Semisulcospira libertina) had been kept for 3 hours. The snails were collected from an endemic area of M. yokogawai, Boseong river in west-southern part of Korea. Observations of papillae were based on light microscopy of those stained with silver nitrate, and on scanning electron microscopy The results are summarized as follows: 1, All papillae observed were uniciliated. 2. Cilia in anterior tip were shorter than the others in other portions. 3. The body papillae were arranged in essentially symmetrical patterns, Total number of the papillae was 126(63 pairs) in average; anterior tip 40(20 pairs), ventral 20(10 pairs), lateral 42(21 pairs), and caudal 8(4 pairs). 4. The chaetotany of M. yokogawai cercaria was: Ci cycle ($3+3C_{I}V,{\;}2+2C_{I}L,{\;}2+3C_{I}D),{\;}C_{II}{\;}cycle(2C_{II}V,{\;}1C_{II}L,{\;}2C_{II}D),{\;}C_{lll}{\;}cycle{\;}(1+lC_{III}V,{\;}1C_{IlI}L),{\;}C_{IV}{\;}cycle{\;}(1C_{IV}V,{\;}IC_{lV}L){\;}in{\;}cephalic{\;}region:{\;}A_I(1A_{IV}V,{\;}1+2A_{I}L,{\;}1A_{I}D),{\;}A_{II}(1A_{II}V,{\;}1+3A_{II}L,{\;}1A_{II}D),{\;}A_{III}(1A_{III}V,{\;}1+1A_{III}L,{\;}1A_{III}D){\;}and{\;}A_{IV}(1A_{IV}V,{\;}2A_{IV}L)$ in antacetabular region: $1M_{I}V{\;}and{\;}2M_{I}L$ in median: $1+1P_{I}L,{\;}1P_{II}L,{\;}1P_{II}D,{\;}1P_{III}L,{\;}1P_{IV}L{\;}and{\;}1P_{IV}D$ in postacetabular region: 2-2-2-2 in caudal region.

  • Two new copper vanadium borophosphate compounds, $(NH_4)(C_2H_{10}N_2)_{5.5}[Cu(C_2H_8N_2)_2]_3[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}17H_2O,\;Cu-VBPO1\;and\;(NH_4)(C_2H_{10}N_2)_{3.5}[Cu(C_2H_8N_2)_2]_5[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6{\cdot}18H_2O$, Cu-VBPO2 have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The structure of Cu-VBPO1 contains a layer anion, {$[Cu(C_2H_8N_2)_2]_3[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6$}$^{12-}$, whereas Cu-VBPO2 has an open framework anion, {$[Cu(C_2H_8N_2)_2]_5[V_2P_2BO_{12}]_6$}$^{8-}$. Effects of Pregnancy Stage on Eating Behaviors of Hanwoo Heifers (Bos taurus coreanae) (한우 미경산우 임신 단계가 채식행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different pregnancy stages on the eating and ruminating behavior of Hanwoo heifers (Bos taurus coreanae). A total of twelve Hanwoo heifers were divided into four groups depending on pregnancy stage: C: before pregnancy, 9 months old, T1: 3 months pregnant, 16 months old, T2: 6 months pregnant, 19 months old, T3: 9 months pregnant, 22 months old (3 replicates per group). Concentrate of 1% of the body weight was fed to them. Roughage was provided at ad libitum to all treatments. Our results revealed that the intake of roughage was the highest in the T3 group (at 3.68 kg) and the lowest in the C group (at 1.02 kg, p<0.05). Total intake in the order from high to low was: T3 > T2 > T1 > C (p<0.05). The rate of dry matter intake compared to body weight (DMI/BW, %) from high to low order was: T3 > T2 > T1 > C (p<0.05). Eating time, ruminating time, and chewing time were the highest in T3 group (p<0.05). Resting time was the highest in C group (p<0.05). The number of bolus and the number of total chews were significantly higher in T3 compared to those in other groups. However, ruminating time per bolus was not significantly difference among groups. The number of chews per bolus from high to low order was: C > T1 > T3 > T2 (p<0.05). The number of bolus per minute was not significantly different among groups. The number of drinking and the number of defecating were significantly higher in C and T1, respectively (p<0.05). However, the number of urinating had no effect according to pregnancy stage. Eating rate and chewing efficiency were significantly higher (p<0.05) in accordance with pregnancy stage (T3 > T2 > T1 > C). Ruminating efficiency was significantly (p<0.05) higher T1 than that in other groups.
