  • This paper is an exploratory study providing critical research issues in knowledge management strategy, process operations, and knowledge management system design and control in mass customization. The firms implementing mass customization provide good cases adopting recent changes in business environment including increased diversity and variability of customer needs, fast development of related technologies, and increase of the necessity of knowledge management. In this study, required knowledge management characteristics are investigated and future research issues are suggested for successful implementations of knowledge management. Research issues are extracted from the context of strategy, process, and information system for the purpose of practical adaptation and the types of mass customization are emphasized as a mediating element for fit and consistency between firms' corporate strategy and knowledge management characteristics.

  • Most organizations adopt a process-based approach to manage their operations and now business process management(BPM) is a well-established concept. Because ISO 9001:2000 has been influenced by BPR and it also emphasizes process based. BPM can get together with ISO 9001:2000. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information has taken ISO 9001:2000 certificate in November 11, 2003 and now implements quality management systems based on BPMS. We call it KQMS(KISTI Quality Management System). KQMS based on BPMS is a new example in field of ISO quality management and is expected to support process management well.

  • The increasing importance of end-user computing(EUC) is reflected in the proliferation of academic and practitioner literature on the subject. However, much of this literature assumes widely differing dimensions of EUC, which tends to make many researchers suggest different success factors for managing EUC. Moreover, the variables regarding EUC management have been considerably restricted in previous research. In order to overcome these problems, this study focuses on identifying EUC dimensions theoretically and deriving generic variables representing the mode of EUC management by factor analysis first. Then, based on these EUC dimensions and generic variables for EUC management, effective ways of managing EUC are hypothesized and tested empirically through a mail survey of end-users in 83 Korean business organizations. The results suggest that effective management of EUC should be different depending upon which dimension more importance is attached to in implementing EUC.

  • Collaborative filtering is one of the most common methods that e-commerce sites and Internet information services use to personalize recommendations. Collaborative filtering has the advantage of being able to use even sparse evaluation data to predict preference scores for new products. To date, however, no in-depth investigation has been conducted on how the data sparsity effect in customers' evaluation data affects collaborative filtering-based recommendation performance. In this study, we analyzed the sparsity effect and used a hybrid method based on customers' evaluations and purchases collected from an online bookstore. Results indicated that recommendation performance decreased monotonically as sparsity increased, and that performance was more sensitive to sparsity in evaluation data rather than in purchase data. Results also indicated that the hybrid use of two different types of data (customers' evaluations and purchases) helped to improve the recommendation performance when evaluation data were highly sparse.

  • The aim of this paper is to identify the barriers to the B2B e-commerce development in China's pharmaceutical industry and to devise an effective strategy for its future development. Built on a detailed investigation of the market structure and recent development of electronic commerce in China's pharmaceutical industry, this paper proposes that the key issue in the development of effective B2B e-commerce business models is the successful transformation of the inter- organizational information systems into electronic marketplaces. In order to ensure the success of such electronic marketplaces, a government driven approach will be needed. In the process, designing an incentive compatible mechanism of coordinating the interest of all the market players will be the prerequisite.

  • Collaborative filtering-based recommendation systems make personalized recommendations based on users' ratings on products. Recommender systems must collect sufficient rating information from users to provide relevant recommendations because less user rating information results in poorer performance of recommender systems. To learn about new users, recommendation systems must first present users with an initial item list. In this study, we designed and analyzed seven selection strategies including the popularity, favorite, clustering, genre, and entropy methods. We investigated how these strategies performed using MovieLens, a public dataset. While the favorite and popularity methods tended to produce the highest average score and greatest average number of ratings, respectively, a hybrid of both favorite and popularity methods or a hybrid of demographic, favorite, and popularity methods also performed within acceptable ranges for both rating scores and numbers of ratings.

  • We consider the graph disconnection problem, which is to find a set of edges such that the total cost of destroying the edges is no more than a given budget and the weight of nodes disconnected from a designated source by destroying the edges is maximized. The problem is known to be NP-hard. We present an integer programming formulation for the problem and develop an algorithm that includes a preprocessing procedure for reducing the problem size, a heuristic for providing a lower bound, and a cutting plane algorithm for obtaining an upper bound. Computational results for evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithm are also presented.

  • This paper compares and evaluates the performances of the two types of mathematical programming models for solving the machine-part cell formation problem in group technology manufacturing : indirect formulation relying on surrogate measure such as similarity coefficient and direct formulation seeking to minimize the number of exceptional elements. New indirect formulation, called the generalized {{{{ { p}_{ } }}-median model. is proposed. Unlike existing {{{{ { p}_{ } }}-median formulations, proposed formulation includes the classical cell formation problem in which only one process plan exsits for each part as a special case. The proposed new formulation can also deal with the cell formation problem in which alternative process plans exist for a part. The indirect formulation is compared with a new direct formulation which needs much fewer extra variables and constraints than existing direct formulations. Some significant findings from comparative experiment are discussed.

  • Information sharing and automated office in the use of PC necessitate corporate network to implement business innovation. Building an efficient network requires competent knowledge on capabilities of various LAN technologies, hardwares and softwares that have rapidly improved in terms of efficiency and cost. This paper compares capabilities of network components: communication protocol, hardware, network operation system, low cost database software and mid-range priced SQL for application development. Also this study presents a new technology on virtual LAN and a selection guide among the various options of the network components which are suitable for PC-based small-sized network in balance of efficiency with economy. In the last section of this paper, a case of small-sized network is given for illustration.

  • This study introduces the concepts on the phase-shifting phenomenon of financial markets, which was firstly used in econophysics area and explains how the phase-shifting behavior is studied in the fields of business management and finance. Specifically, we explain how the phases of financial markets are extremely changed under some external conditions, do an extensive literature review, and carry out case studies focusing on the 3 major financial crisis events including the 87 October crash, 97 Asian financial crisis, and 2007 global financial crisis. We also empirically examine the phase-shifting behavior of the Korean ELW products that has a similar payoff structure to the KOSPI200 options.
