  • This article is a socio-cultural research on the fitness members by employing an original synthesis of the work of Elias and Bourdieu. The purpose of this research is to provide a multidimensional and in-depth analysis of fitness members, by researching the relationship between body groups with differing economic and cultural capital (e.g. Gangnam and Gangbuk, private and public center). Through interviews and participant observation, the established and outsider relations of fitness members in both Gangnam and Gangbuk are examined (Gangnam 12: Gangbuk 12). Participants in social space differentiated by fitness capital and socio-economic positions gather in certain spaces that identify them as members of the same class location: the established body in Gangnam (Gangnam E), the outsider body in Gangnam (Gangnam O), the established body in Gangbuk (Gangbuk E), and the outsider body in Gangbuk (Gangbuk O). The E-O figuration of the body in fitness clubs shows differences in their body tastes and habitus (selecting a fitness centre, body ostentation, social assessment, making muscles, participation in other sports) and civilizing process (fitness manners and etiquette). The fitness centers in Gangnam and Gangbuk were not simply spaces for exercise but symbolic spaces that both recreate and perpetuate socio-cultural hierarchies between members.

  • In light of the recent increase in new independent spaces within the field of artistic production, this study seeks to examine the daily experience and art practice of agents in such spaces. In-depth interviews were conducted with fifteen emerging artists, who manage new independent art spaces and participate actively in related activities, and the significance of their activities was analyzed. An important theoretical foundation of this study is Bourdieu's concept of the field of cultural production. According to Bourdieu, in order to understand a specific field, the habitus of agents must be studied together with the structure of the field. This study found that individuals belonging to the same or a close generation exhibit similar attitudes to life based on shared experiences, and they can be connected to their art practice. Most agents of new spaces did not have high expectations for success, and chose to practice art independently while bonding with their peers and enjoying the moment rather than wait for recognition or funding from external sources. Their self-fulfilling habitus is condition-specific and can be regarded as a form of flexible art practice. Given the poor conditions of today's field of artistic production, this is likely to serve as an advantage in entering the field and in position-taking. The social significance of this study lies in the fact that the aforementioned characteristics of the agents of independent production spaces not only reflect the current field of artistic production but also other fields of cultural production at large in our society.

  • Taking the issues of inequity and power between NES and NNES teachers as a starting point, this qualitative study explores the way the widespread belief of the native speaker fallacy manifests itself in one NNES teacher's teaching life and is linked to the teacher's understanding of herself as an English teacher. Guided by critical applied linguistics (Pennycook, 2001) and using Bourdieu's (1991) theorization of symbolic violence, I conducted an instrumental case study (Stake, 1995) in an ESL writing class at a US university. I collected data through classroom observations and interviews over a nine-month period and analyzed the data using the constant comparison method (Glaser and Strauss, 1967). The findings illustrate the ways the dominant ideology of the native speaker fallacy works to maintain and reproduce the status quo unequal relation between NES and NNES teachers by making all parties involved believe in the artificial sociocultural arrangements that favor NES teachers as legitimate. The findings direct our attention to the importance of critical teacher education that will enable future TESOL professionals to engage in critical reflection on diverse issues and envision transformative change. The findings, in particular, point to the need for language support for NNES teachers in TESOL teacher education.

  • The aim of this research is to examine the tendency of national tastes reflected in global SPA brands based on the theories of Gans' taste culture and Bourdieu's cultural capital. In this study, the leading global SPA brands such as H&M, ZARA, GAP and UNIQLO can be considered as a representative taste culture as well as an icon of popular culture in the $21^{st}$ century global fashion and also the aesthetic taste of each brand differentiated from their national aesthetic values based on socio-cultural backgrounds. H&M represents fashionableness, practicality and environmental friendliness based on naturalism, democratic humanism, and functional practicality of Sweden. ZARA emerges as the most trend oriented brand as well as customer centered on the basis of cultural diversity, passion and glamorous artistic sensibility of Spain. GAP shows American iconic style, which is the functional sports casual wear, originated from American leisure culture and mass production. Lastly, UNIQLO represents high-tech functionalism and practical simplicity based on Japanese delicate workmanship and simple, concise lifestyle while relatively does not much follow the fashion forward trends. Consequently, the national taste has been proved as a solid foundation to identify each global brand. This should be the key component also applied to Korean global brands for developing their concepts and strategies more successfully based on our own national aesthetic taste.

  • This study examines motivations for international students to study abroad at Korean universities. Employing qualitative and mixed methods, this study used grounded theory to analyse data obtained from student interviews, essays, digital storytelling videos, and student video representations to explicate the nature of study of six subjects. All subjects were enrolled in English Education courses during years 2014-2017. The researcher was the course instructor. Results from this study revealed that major codes that emerged from data analyses were those of economics, culture, language study, and personal development, corroborating with findings of most research literature regarding international students' motivations (OUSO, 2015). However, survey of professional literature and study data showed that motivational codes presented in the literature and this study, were discursive in nature in that each code was not only connected to all other codes, but also mutually co-constructive. As such, this study suggests that motivational codes found in study abroad literature were discursive in nature, resembling Bourdieu's (1991) theory of economic, social, and cultural capitals. Results of this study suggest that various motivations for studying abroad are subsumed under economic logic of expense and career development.

  • This study aims to understand the process of valuing contemporary artworks by young and emerging artists via online art platforms. This paper conceptualizes Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, which theoretically guides us for conducting a case study of Saatchi Art. This article mainly collected data by interviewing seven Korean artists who were selected by our case with the supplement information carried out direct observation and document reviews. By analyzing the gathered data, the key finding of this research is that the selection of artists in Saatchi Art's curatorial program implicitly admits and guarantees the value of their artworks. By doing so, it contributes to building symbolic capital for the selected artists. This article also contends that such construction of the artists' symbolic capital results from the accumulated symbolic capitals of the founder and curator of the online platform. The theoretical contribution of this paper is to expand previous research on valuing artworks in the offline art world into the online one.
