  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of newly developed autogenous tooth bone graft material (AutoBT)application for sinus bone graft procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The patients with less than 5.0 mm of residual bone height in maxillary posterior area were enrolled. For the sinus bone graft procedure, Bio-Oss was grafted in control group and AutoBT powder was grafted in experimental group. Clinical and radiographic examination were done for the comparison of grafted materials in sinus cavity between groups. At 4 months after sinus bone graft procedure, biopsy specimens were analyzed by microcomputed tomography and histomorphometric examination for the evaluation of healing state of bone graft site. RESULTS. In CT evaluation, there was no difference in bone density, bone height and sinus membrane thickness between groups. In microCT analysis, there was no difference in total bone volume, new bone volume, bone mineral density of new bone between groups. There was significant difference trabecular thickness ($0.07{\mu}m$ in Bio-Oss group Vs. $0.08{\mu}m$ in AutoBT group) (P=.006). In histomorphometric analysis, there was no difference in new bone formation, residual graft material, bone marrow space between groups. There was significant difference osteoid thickness ($8.35{\mu}m$ in Bio-Oss group Vs. $13.12{\mu}m$ in AutoBT group) (P=.025). CONCLUSION. AutoBT could be considered a viable alternative to the autogenous bone or other bone graft materials in sinus bone graft procedure.

  • We got the following results from the experiment and examination in order to measure the bone-marrow dose of the patients when we did chest or abdomen radiography in the hospitals located in Seoul City from Jan. 1989 until Feb. 1990. 1. In the exposure factors for chest radiography, tube voltage $60{\sim}69\;kVp$ took 48.3%, $80{\sim}89\;or\;90{\sim}99\;kVp$ took 13.8% respectively, $70{\sim}79\;kVp$ 10.3% and $100{\sim}129\;kVp$ 10.3%. In tube current and exposure times, $6{\sim}10\;mAs$ took 41.4%, $16{\sim}20\;mAs$ took 20.7% and $11{\sim}15\;mAs$ 13.8%, measure under 5mAs 10.4% orderly. 2. In chest radiography, the bone-marrow dose came to the minimum 3.48 mrad, to the maximum 35.67 mrad, to the mean 14.46 mrad, to the standard deviation 8.89 mrad. 3. Comparing bone-marrow doses of the patients when we used Bucky technique and non-Bucky technique, that of Bucky technique was very higher than that of non-Bucky technique. Because the result was that Bucky technique had the span of $6.09{\sim}35.67$ mrad, while non-Bucky technique had the span of $3.48{\sim}17.40$ mrad. 4. In the exposure factors for abdomen radiography, tube voltage of $70{\sim}79\;kVp$ was 63.0%, that of $80{\sim}89\;kVp$ was 22.2%, that of $60{\sim}69\;kVp$ was 11.1 %. Tube current and exposure times of $31{\sim}40\;kVp$ was 33.4%, that of $51{\sim}60\;mAs$ was 29.6% and that of $41{\sim}50\;mAs$ was 22.2%. 5. In abdomen radiography, the bone-marrow dose of the patients came to the minimum of 6.96 mrad, to the maximum of 60.90 mrad, to the mean of 35.73mrad, to the standard deviation of 12.65 mrad.

  • The aim of this study is to find out what inhibition effects the Germinated Seed of Rhynchosia Volubilis(GSRV) has by its feeding period on the bone absorption in ovariectomized white rats. Close examination of the amounts of the Interleukin-6 in the rats by the groups of one, two and three-day germination periods led to the following conclusions. Feeding ovariectomized white rats with GSRV by the groups of one, two and three-day germination periods showed less amounts of Interleukin-6 in their bone marrow in all the feeding periods of two, three and four weeks than in the case of control group, revealing a statistical significance. Therefore, the Germinated Seed of Rhynchosia Volubilis(GSRV) is believed to have inhibition effects on bone resorption.

  • Careful examination of the oral cavity may reveal findings indicative of an underlying systemic condition, and allow for early diagnosis and treatment. Examination should include evaluation for mucosal changes, periodontal inflammation and bleeding, and general condition of the teeth. A 12-year-old man visited for molar pain during 3 months. He was diagnosed with having a possibility of hematopoietic malignancy, showing the loss of lamina dura, destruction of bony crypt, and high attenuation in the bone marrow. He was referred to department of pediatrics, additional study, including peripheral cell morphology and bone marrow exam, were performed, and diagnosed as acute lymphoblastic anemia. Despite chemotherapy to cure leukemia, he was expired 8 months after initial diagnosis. The purpose of this report is to promote and evoke the awareness regarding an initial examination of the dentist to make an effort to acquire accurate knowledge and information about life-threatening disease in usual dental practice.

  • Background: Abnormalities of the peripheral blood are frequent and varied in patients with miliary tuberculosis. Anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, monocytosis, basophilia, eosinophilia and leukemoid reactions have been reported. These abnormalities are more frequent in patients with positive bone marrow study. In this report, we evaluated clinical, hematological and immunological features in patients with miliary tuberculosis in order to know whether difference is existed between "bone marrow biopsy positive group(pathologically proven to miliary tuberculosis)" and "negative group". Method: Clinical evaluation, serum ADA, sIL-2R, and T-lymphocyte subsets were measured in 40 patients with miliary tuberculosis who received bone marrow biopsy. Results: 1) The average age of patients was 39 year-old. There were 23 male and 17 female patients. Associated extrapulmonary tuberculosis are 9 CNS tuberculosis, 6 joint tuberculosis, and 2 tuberculous pleurisy. 2) Sixteen of the 40 patients were positive bone marrow biopsy(60%). 3) Sixteen of the 40 patients(60%) had anemia(11 positive patients: 13 negative patients). Leukopenia occurred in 12 per cent(4:1). Thrombocytopenia was noted in 10%(3:1). 4) The mean value of serum ADA was 83 U/L(90 U/L: 70.6 U/L, p=0.23). 5) The mean activity of Soluble IL-2 receptor was 4,643 pmol/L($6840{\pm}7446\;pmol/L$: $1,897{\pm}1,663\;pmol/L$, p=0.06). 6) In the T lymphocyte subsets, the percent of T-lymphocytes was 64%(62%:73%, p=0.2). In some patients(9), $T_4$ and $T_8$ ratio in BAL fluid($1.97{\pm}1.2$) was higher than that in the peripheral blood($1.16{\pm}0.5$). Conclusion: Bone marrow examination are diagnostic in 60% of cases of miliary tuberculosis. Percents of the total T lymphocyte and helper T cell in BAL are more elevated than in peripheral blood. There was no significant difference in peripheral blood abnormalities and marker of T lymphocyte activation between the bone marrow biopsy positive and negative group.

  • Objective : In Moyamoya disease, the primary goal of treatment is to improve collateral circulation through angiogenesis. In the present study, we obtained and sub-cultured bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) from rats without a cell-mediated immune response. Then, we injected the labeled BMSCs directly into adjacent temporal muscle during encephalomyosynangiosis (EMS). Three weeks after BMSC transplantation, we examined the survival of the cells and the extent of neovascularization. Methods : We divided 20 rats into a BMSC transplantation group (n=12) and a control group (n=8). Seven days after the induction of chronic cerebral ischemia, an EMS operation was performed, and labeled BMSCs ($1{\times}106^6/100\;{\mu}L$) were injected in the temporal muscle for the transplantation group, while an equivalent amount of culture solution was injected for the control group. Three weeks after the transplantation, temporal muscle and brain tissue were collected for histological examination and western blot analysis. Results : The capillary/muscle ratio in the temporal muscle was increased in the BMSC transplantation group compared to the control group, showing a greater increase of angiogenesis (p<0.05). In the brain tissue, angiogenesis was not significantly different between the two groups. The injected BMSCs in the temporal muscle were vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-positive by immunofluorescence staining. In both temporal muscle and brain tissue, the expression of VEGF by western blot analysis was not much different between the two groups. Conclusion : During EMS in a chronic cerebral ischemia rat model, the injection of BMSCs resulted in accelerated angiogenesis in the temporal muscle compared to the control group.

  • Aim: To examine the efficacy of Hominis Placenta Hydrate (HPH) on the hemopoiesis in a myelosuppression model system. Methods: Mice were injected with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) intraperitoneally and were administered with 200 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg of HPH. Peripheral blood was analyzed at 5, 9, and 13 days. Histopathologic examination of bone marrow was performed at 5 days after 5-FU injection. The expression of cytokine involved in hemopoiesis was examined by using ELISA kit. Results: The hematology data demonstrated that the treatment of all the agents augmented monocytes and leucocytes counts in the peripheral blood WBC and platelet in HPH treated group were significant increased compared with control group. Also, cell numbers of RBC and Hb were restored. In HPH treated group, expression of IL-3, GM-CSF was significant increased But not TPO. Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is suggested that Hominis Placenta Hydrate is an effective remedy for the bone marrow failure and myelosuppression occurring during chemotherapy.

  • Human parvovirus(HPV) B19 infection causes erythema infectiosum in children, sometimes red cell aplastic crisis with hemolytic anemia and chronic bone marrow failure in immunocompromised hosts. HPV B19 is directly cytotoxic for erythroid progenitor cells and inhibits erythropoiesis. Infrequently, HPV B19 inhibits hematopoiesis of three cell lineages and causes transient pancytopenia in patients with hemolytic disorders. We report three patients with hereditary spherocytosis who developed transient aplastic crisis. A HPV B19 infection was confirmed by IgM anti-B19 parvovirus titers and characteristic findings of bone marrow examination as the causative agent associated with severe pancytopenia. Three patients recovered spontaneously after a short period of supportive care with red cell transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulin.
