A type IP-2 transport package should prevent a loss or dispersal of the radioactive contents and a more than $20\%$ increase in the maximum radiation level at any external surface of the package when it were subjected to the drop test under the normal conditions of transport. If a shielding thickness of IP-2 transport package is thick, a bolted lid type may prevent a loss or dispersal of the radioactive contents than the door type of ISO containers which are generally used as a type IP-2 transport package. In this paper, to evaluate the effect of drop directions on the bolt tension and the coherence of a bolt, the drop tests of preliminary small model are tested and evaluated for seven directions before the drop test of a type IP-2 transport package with a bolted lid type under the normal conditions of transport. Seven drop directions which are a bottom-vertical drop, a lid-vortical drop. a horizontal drop and four corner drops have been carried out. Using a force sensor, the bolt tension during the drop impact is measured. The coherence of bolt is evaluated by the difference between the fastening torque of bolt before a drop test and the unfastening torque of bolt after a drop impact.
The use of the ordinary double nut (i.e., ODN) composed of a master nut (i.e., M-nut) and a slave nut (i.e., S-nut) is a highly efficient method to prevent bolts loosening. A novel double nut (i.e., FODN) composed of a master nut (i.e., M-nut) and flat slave nut (i.e., FS-nut) is proposed to save raw materials. The bolt fastening tests with single nut, ODN and FODN are performed to investigate the preload and counterbalance forces. Corresponding finite element analysis (FEA) models are established and validated by comparing the preload with the experimental results. The load-bearing capacity, the extrusion effect, and the contact stress of each engaged thread for ODN and FODN are observed by FEA. The experimental and simulated results revealed that the bolt fastening with double-nut has different load-transferring mechanisms from single-nut. Nevertheless, for double-nut/bolt assemblies, the FS-nut can provide load transfer that is like that of the S-nut, and the FODN is a reasonable and reliable fastening method. Furthermore, based on the theory of Yamamoto, a formula considering the extrusion effect is proposed to calculate the preload distribution of the double-nut, which is applicable to varying thicknesses of slave-nuts in double-nut/bolt assemblies.

Relaxation of high strength bolts was investigated. Block type and splice type specimens were fabricated with different types of bolts and different clamping lengths. Bolts were tightened to the specified torque. Clamping forces were measured through strain gauges installed on the shafts of bolts, while specimens were kept in a constant temperature and humidity. In all cases, ratio of clamping force reduction is less than 10%. Test results of different types of specimens and bolts and different clamping lengths were compared each other by using a simple model, which is suggested in this study for the estimation of bolt relaxation. The suggested model shows reasonably good agreements with test results for all cases. No difference is found between F13T and F10T bolts, but Dacro coated bolts shows higher relaxation than black bolts by approx. 30%. And also the comparison of test results shows that ratios of bolt relaxation become larger as clamping lengths of bolt shorter and the number of faying surfaces greater.

A powerlock is used to transmit torque between two shafts, to protect important equipment from overloads, and to compensate for the misalignment of assembled shafts. In this study, the effect of the shapes of the inner rings, bolt-fastening force, and friction on power transmission performance of powerlocks is investigated. Finite element analysis and experiments were conducted for two cases, and the analysis results were validated. Analyses were carried out for inner rings of various shapes and for various values of bolt-fastening force and friction coefficient. The main factors that affect the torque transmission performance were investigated based on the analysis results.

The oversized and slotted holes are frequently required for the built-up in construction sites. The foreign provisions specify the reduction of the slip load subjected to the size of bolt holes and the direction of load. There are no domestic building codes and researches on the bolt holes. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate a change of joint strength quantitatively according to the bolt-hole size and surface condition by means of experiment. This study was conducted to evaluate the slip load subjected to the size of bolt holes, and measured on a change of clamping force of high strength bolts during 168 and 800 hours to analyze the trend of relaxation after fastening bolts. Torque shear bolts defined on KS B 2819 was used for the specimen. Test results exhibit that the variation on the slip load of the others was below 10% by contrast with the standard hole and the highest rate of relaxation was 2.66% of the initial clamping force at the case of the long-slotted hole of 2.5D.
It is only three(3) years since we applied brackets for scaffolding in the construction area. Unfortunately, there is no structural criteria on how to install those in the site so far, despite the fact that those brackets have been applied into the site by the firms already. It is shown that resistant capacity of each bracket type has been investigated, analyzed from this experimental study. Accident-concerning data on construction site analyzed by the Ministry of Labor, show temporary structure involves 18.6% of the total industrial accident, which the accidents from scafold-supporting brackets have rate of 42.5% of the ones occurred from the temporary structures. There are two main aspects to be observed : one is how much resistant capacity the brackets have themselves, the other is how exactly to install those without eccentricity. But practically, nobody does check of this bolt-installing conditions in the site and no check of tightening level of nut because there is no available tool to check torque amount for this kind of nut. We just have to rely on scaffolders experience of this tightening. This experiment involves just this variable of tightness at site. Eventually this insufficient tightness causes to collapse those scaffolding structures. The bracket might have less the one than its original capacity due to this insufficient tightness. Three(3) times of PIVOT tests show that fractured condition of two(2) row brackets has occurred mostly at lower bolt due to shear force. Therefore, tightness of bracket-installing bolt, tensile strength of the bolt, shear strength of the bolt, loading condition with equal two point or inequal two point loads, are mainly investigated as variables in this study.

Purpose: This paper is a fundamental study on the applicability of the smart bolt developed for monitoring system to detect the leakage of water supply valve. Method: A leak detection experiments were conducted using the smart bolt having embedded strain sensors and accelerometer. The smart bolt used in study meets the allowable criteria of torque and tensile stress for water supply system, and it can be applied to a joint of the water supply valve by behaving well within the allowable limits. Result: As a result of the simulated leak tests, a leak signal at the valve leak point was detected in a band of 60Hz, and the main pipe leaking point was observed to produce a leak signal having much higher frequency than that of the valve leak point. This seems to result in a total coupled vibration under unconfined conditions of the pipes. Conclusion: The smart bolts appeared applicable to detecting a leaking signal from the water supply valve.

The tiebar is used by joint for keeping from deformation by conserving tensile load between two structure. The tiebar, bolt joining type, is combined by tiebar and clevis like bolt and nut. By coupled, it maintains tensile load. While it goes through repeated load, it occurs to loose because joining force between clevis and nuts is reduced. So, continuos maintenance is needed such as making tighter periodically, repairing the broken part and so on. For that reason, this paper calculates necessary torque unfastening joint for conventional tiebar and presenting tiebar theoretically and then consider the reason that conventional bolt-typed tiebar unties. Also, through vibration untied test for two types of tiebar we confirm that presenting tiebar have a improvement of unfastening when we compare with the conventional one.

This work presents a study on development of a practical and quantitative technique for assessment of the structural health condition by PZT impedance-based technique associated with longitudinal wave propagation. The bolt fastening condition is adjusted by torque wrench In order to estimate the damage condition numerically, we suggest the evaluation method of impedance peak frequency shift $\Delta$F in this paper.
The excavation broken zones (EBZ) of gateways is a significant factor in determining the stability of man-made opening. The EBZ of 55 gateways with variety geological conditions were measured using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). The results found that the greatly depth of EBZ, the smallest is 1.5 m and the deepest is 3.5 m. Experimental investigations were carried out in the laboratory and in the coal mine fields for applying the combined arch support theory to large EBZ. The studies found that resin bolts with high tensile strength and good bond force could provide high pretension force with bolt extensible anchorage method in the field. Furthermore, the recently invented torque amplifier could greatly improve the bolt pretension force in poor lithology. The FLAC3D numerical simulation found that the main diffusion sphere of pretension force was only in the free segment zone of the surrounding rock. Further analysis found that the initial load-bearing zone thickness of the combined arch structure in large EBZ could be expressed by the free segment length of bolt. The using of high mechanical property bolts and steel with high pretension force will clearly putting forward the bolt length selection rule based on the combined arch support theory.
