  • An experimental outdoor optical wireless data communication system with an optical filter in the presence of sunlight or artificial light is presented. For the efficient blocking of light noise outdoors, we employ an optical filter made of microlouver film on the top of the photo diode. This filter is designed to block any light noise incident from an angle higher than $30^{\circ}$ on the assumption that light noise does not face the photo diode horizontally. Outdoor experiments daytime with the optical filtering have been conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that the optical filter effectively blocks nearly all light noise incident from the specified angle or higher and more than 90% of the transmitted data packets are successfully received. The proposed outdoor visible light data communication can thus facilitate a practical free space outdoor optical wireless data transmission.

  • The deblocking filter (DF) reduces blocking artifacts in encoded video sequences, and thereby significantly improves the subjective and objective quality of videos. Statistics show that the DF accounts for 5-18% of the total decoding time in high-efficiency video coding. Therefore, speeding up the DF will improve codec performance, especially for the decoder. In view of the rapid development of multicore technology, we propose a parallel DF scheme based on a modified order of accessing the coding tree units (CTUs) by analyzing the data dependencies between adjacent CTUs. This enables the DF to run in parallel, providing accelerated performance and more flexibility in the degree of parallelism, as well as finer parallel granularity. We additionally solve the problems of variable privatization and thread synchronization in the parallelization of the DF. Finally, the DF module is parallelized based on the HM16.1 reference software using OpenMP technology. The acceleration performance is experimentally tested under various numbers of cores, and the results show that the proposed scheme is very effective at speeding up the DF.

  • In this paper, a reduced complexity fillet to simultaneously suppress the blocking and ringing artifacts of compressed video sequence is addressed. A new one dimensional regularized function to incorporate the smoothness to its neighboring pixels into the solution is defined, resulting in very low complexity filter The proposed regularization function consists of two sub-functions that combine local data fidelity and local smoothing constraints. The regularization parameters to control the trade-off between the local fidelity to the data and the smoothness are determined by available overhead information in decoder, such as maroc-block type and quantization step size. In addition, the regularization parameters are designed to have the limited range and stored as look-up-table, and therefore, the computational cost to determine the parameters can be reduced. The experimental results show the capability and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • H.264/AVC provides better quality than other algorithms by using a deblocking filter to remove blocking distortion on block boundary of the decoded picture. However, this filtering process includes lots of memory accesses, which cause delay of overall decoding time. In this paper, we propose a data-reuse algorithm to speed up the process for the deblocking filter. To reuse the data, a new filtering order is suggested. By using this order, we reduce the memory access and accelerate the deblocking filter. The modeling of proposed algorithm is compiled under ARM ADS1.2 and simulated with Armulator. The results of the experiment compared with H.264/AVC standard are achieved on average 58.45% and 57.93% performance improvements at execution cycles and memory access cycles, respectively.

  • This paper addresses an adaptive postprocessing technique to remove blocking effects of the highly compressed images. The proposed technique removes blocking effects selectively by applying filters with different strength according to block analysis based on the directional activity. One-dimensional filters which are used to remove grid noises accomplish the adaptive filtering to the signal itself as well as to the directionality of the block. Moreover, we propose a detection method of the staircase noises and corner outliers and a two-dimensional directional filter to remove them. Experimental results for various images and bitrates show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods in PSNR for the objective performance and GBIM for the subjective quality evaluation.

  • The reconstructed images from highly compressed MPEG or H.263 data have noticeable image degradations, such as blocking artifacts near the block boundaries, corner outliers at cross points of blocks, and ringing noise near image edges, because the MPEG or H.263 quantizes the transformed coefficients of 8$\times$8 pixel blocks. A post-processing algorithm has been proposed by authors to reduce quantization effects, such as blocking artifacts, corner outliers, and ringing noise, in MPEG-decompressed images. Our signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm reduces the quantization effects adaptively by using both spatial frequency and temporal information extracted from the compressed data. The blocking artifacts are reduced by one-dimensional (1-D) horizontal and vertical low pass filtering (LPF), and the ringing noise is reduced by two-dimensional (2-D) signal-adaptive filtering (SAF). A comparison study of the subjective quality evaluation using modified single stimulus method (MSSM), the objective quality evaluation (PSNR) and the computation complexity analysis between the signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm and the MPEG-4 VM (Verification Model) post-processing algorithm is performed by computer simulation with several MPEG-4 image sequences. According to the comparison study, the subjective image qualities of both algorithms are similar, whereas the PSNR and the comparison complexity analysis of the signal-adaptive post-processing algorithm shows better performance than the VM post-processing algorithm.

  • Though a deblocking filter of H.264/AVC provides enhanced image quality by removing blocking artifact on block boundary, the complex filtering operation on this process is a dominant factor of the whole decoding time. In this paper, we designed an ASIP to accelerate deblocking filter operation with the proposed instruction set. We designed a processor based on a MIPS structure with LISA, simulated a deblocking later model, and compared the execution time on the proposed instruction set. In addition, we generated HDL model of the processor through CoWare's Processor Designer and synthesized with TSMC 0.25um CMOS cell library by Synopsys Design Compiler. As the result of the synthesis, the area and delay time increased 7.5% and 3.2%, respectively. However, due to the proposed instruction set, total execution performance is improved by 18.18% on average.

  • The deblocking filter in the H.264/AVC video coding standard helps to reduce the blocking artifacts produced in the decoding process. But it consumes one third of the computational complexity in H.624/AVC decoder, which advocates an efficient design of a hardware accelerator for filtering. This paper proposes an architecture of deblocking filter using two filters and some registers for data reuse. Our architecture improves the throughput and minimize the number of external memory access by increasing data reuse. After initialization, two filters are able to perform filtering operation simultaneously. It takes only 96 clocks to complete filtering for one macroblock. We design and synthesis our architecture using Dongbuanam $0.18{\mu}m$ standard cell library and the maximum clock frequency is 200MHz.

  • The performance of the facial recognition system is determined by many technical factors. Further, most of the technical factors have been realized or are still in continued research. The recognition rate has a great influence on performance not only by technical factors but also by other factors. However, researchers are trying to improve the recognition rate by focusing only on technical factors. The mechanism of recognizing is to compare a face image obtained by photography to an already stored face image and determine the score of the similarity. However, if the photographed image is damaged by external light, even a system with a good algorithm will fail to recognize it. Therefore, it is important to prevent the disturbance of light entering from the outside, so it should be blocked, but the camera will not work without light. Thus, it is proposed that a method to secure the external light but block the disturbance of light that affects photography. A method of blocking disturbance light is to use a polarization filter. There are three polarization methods: circular polarization, linear polarization, and elliptical polarization. In this paper, an experiment was performed to overcome disturbance of light using only a circularly polarized filter. In addition, a lighting system that reproduces disturbance light was provided for the experiment, and light of varying intensities and angles was installed to affect the face recognition camera. As a result of actual application, it was determined that a very improved recognition performance in various disturbance light environments.
