Utilization of Averaging Process of Blink Reflex to Improve Diagnosis of Facial Nerve Palsy

  • The conventional blink reflex has limited clinical application since it displays a wide range of change in the responses. Thus, we studied the blink reflex using the averaging process which is engaged in evoked potential studies in order to measure various responses such as latency, amplitude, and duration, which have been difficult to measure due to their wide ranges of changes. Among the Bell's palsy patient group, 13 patients who had the symptoms of incomplete palsy were examined to assess the results of the blink reflex through the averaging process. The subjects were 54 people in a normal group (108 eyes) and 18 patients (36 eyes) with Bell's palsy. For the study method, the conventional blink reflex and the blink reflex using the averaging process were measured for the people in the normal group, while in the Bell's palsy group, only the blink reflex using the averaging process was analyzed. In the case of the normal group, the blink reflex using the averaging process could measure all of the latency, amplitude, and duration. It was also observed that the latency, amplitude, and duration of R1, ipsilateral R2, and contralateral R2 significantly differed on the affected side of the Bell's palsy patients, compared to the unaffected side. The blink reflex using the averaging process should be more effective than the conventional method since the former can evaluate the latency, amplitude, and duration for Bell's palsy, while the latter can only assess latency.

  • In this study, we developed the drowziness prevention system to detect the driver's drowziness and relieve the driver. A computer vision method was proposed to detect the driver's drowziness. We extracted the eyes and mouth in the face image and tracked the positions from the image sequencies in real time. The eye blink duration and yawning was used as the parameters of drowziness. Wehn the drowziness state of a driver is detected, the driver is refreshed by the scent generator and the alarm. Also, the driver's bio-signal is acquired and analysed the vigilance state.

Quantitative Comparison of the E-book and Paper-book by using Eye-tracker

  • Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the difference of legibility between e-book and paper-book by using eye-tracker. Background: Despite of many researches on the e-book and paper-book, there are few researches on the difference between e-book and paper-book. In addition, the researches on the e-book were only dependent on the e-book reader. This study focused on the comparison of e-book and paper-book controlled with the same environments. Method: This study was conducted with $2{\times}3$ within-subject design. Independent variables include the types of book (e-book, paper-book) and font sizes (8pt, 10pt, 12pt). Dependent variables are four measures of fixation duration, saccade length, blink rate and subjective discomfort. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with repeated measured design was used to investigate the main and interaction effects of independent variables on each of the dependent variables. The multiple comparisons were performed by post hoc analysis and Bonferroni correction was applied. Results: Fixation duration at e-book was longer than paper-book (p<0.01). Saccade length at e-book was shorter than paper-book (p<0.05). Blink rate at e-book was higher than paper-book (p<0.1). Subjective discomfort at e-book was higher than paper-book (p<0.1). Legibility at 8pt was better than 10pt, 12pt (p<0.01) in fixation duration, saccade length and subjective discomfort. Conclusion: It was found that the legibility at e-book are worse than paper-book from this study. These results indicated that the legibility of e-book was needed to be validated and improved to replace the paper-book. Application: This study suggests improving something related to fixation duration, saccade length, blink rate and subjective discomfort for betterment of e-book.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the cause of driver's drowsiness and to get information about driver's drowsiness from facial image using computer vision. We measured the driver's movements of a head and shoulders in the highway arid street. We also measured the eye blink duration and yawning duration of normal and drowsy drivers. from the results, we confirmed that the measurement of eye blink and yawning might be a way of drowsy detection.

다양한 눈의 특징 분석을 통한 감성 분류 방법 (Emotion Classification Method Using Various Ocular Features)

  • 본 논문에서는 근적외선 카메라를 이용한 눈의 다양한 특징 분석을 통해 감성을 분류하는 방법에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. 제안하는 방법은 기존의 유사한 연구와 비교했을 때, 감성 분류를 위해 더 많은 눈의 특징을 사용하였고, 각 특징이 모두 유의미한 정보를 포함하고 있음을 검증하였다. 긍정-부정, 각성-이완의 상반된 감성 유발을 위해 청각 자극을 사용함으로써, 눈의 특징에 끼치는 영향을 최소화하였다. 감성 분류를 위한 특징으로써, 동공 크기, 동공 크기 변화율, 깜박임 빈도, 눈을 감은 지속시간을 사용하였으며, 이들은 근적외선 카메라 영상으로부터 자체 개발한 자동화된 처리 방법을 통해 추출된다. 분석 결과, 각성-이완 감성 유발 자극에 대해서는 동공 크기 변화율과 깜박임 빈도 특징이 유의한 차이를 보였다. 또한, 긍정-부정 감성 유발 자극에 대해에서는 눈을 감은 지속시간 특징이 유의한 차이를 보였다. 특히 동공 크기 특징은 각성-이완, 긍정-부정의 상반된 감성 자극 유발 상황에서 모두 유의한 차이가 없음을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • This study aimed to verify the criteria of the driver monitoring systems proposed by UNECE ACSF informal working group and the ministry of land, infrastructure, and transport of South Korea using driving behavior data. In order to verify the criteria, we investigated the safety regulations of driver monitoring systems in a conditional autonomous vehicle and found that the driver monitoring measures were related to eye blinks times, head movements, and eye closed duration. Thus, we took two different experimental data including real-world driving and simulator-based drowsy driving behaviors in previous studies. The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the drowsy driving study, 10 drivers drove approximately 37 km of a monotonous highway (about 22 min) twice. The results suggested that the appropriate duration of eyes continuously closed was 4 seconds. The results from real-world driving data were presented in the other paper - part 1.

아이트래킹 평가 방법과 경관 형용사 평가 비교 연구 - 대학 캠퍼스 야간경관을 대상으로 - (Comparative Study on Eye-Tracking Evaluation and Landscape Adjectives Evaluation - Focusing on the Nightscape of a University Campus -)

  • 본 연구는 다양한 야간경관의 특성을 파악하기 위하여 아이트래킹 평가 방법과 경관 형용사 평가 방법의 비교를 통하여 시지각적 경관 지각에 대한 이해를 높이고, 경관 평가 영역을 확장하기 위한 연구논문이다. 연구 결과, 캠퍼스 야간경관을 대상으로 한 아이트래킹 평가 결과에서는 '눈 깜빡임 수(Blink count)', '눈 응시 시간(Fixation duration) 평균', '시선의 급격한 이동시간(Saccade duration) 평균'과 경관 형용사 중 '아름다운', '흥미로운', '접근성이 높은', '만족하는', '안전한' 형용사와 유의미한 상관관계가 있음이 검증되었다. 또한, 캠퍼스 야간경관의 관심지역 분석 및 비교에서는 경관 특성별 관심영역이 달라지는 경향성을 파악하였으며, 특히 '문', '표지판' 등 특수 경관 요소에 집중하여 시선이 고정되는 것으로 도출되었다. 이상의 결과들을 통하여 아이트래킹 분석 방법이 '경관 요소'에 대한 평가를 구체화시킬 수 있는 효율적인 도구라고 판단하였으며, 기존 개념으로만 제시되었던 경관 선호 이론들을 뒷받침할 수 있는 근거로 활용될 수 있다는 측면도 의미 있는 결과라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이처럼 객관적인 경관 평가 기법으로서 아이트래킹의 다양한 활용 가능성을 제안하였으며, 지속적인 연구 결과의 축적으로 경관계획에 구체적인 시사점을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.

In the real-world driving study, 52 drivers drove approximately 11.0 km of rural road (about 20 min), 7.9 km of urban road (about 25 min), and 20.8 km of highway (about 20 min). The results suggested that the appropriate number of blinks during the last 60 seconds was 4 times, and the head movement interval was 35 seconds. The results from drowsy driving data will be presented in another paper - part 2.

동공크기 변화신호의 STFT와 CNN을 이용한 2차원 감성분류 (2D Emotion Classification using Short-Time Fourier Transform of Pupil Size Variation Signals and Convolutional Neural Network)

  • Pupil size variation can not be controlled intentionally by the user and includes various features such as the blinking frequency and the duration of a blink, so it is suitable for understanding the user's emotional state. In addition, an ocular feature based emotion classification method should be studied for virtual and augmented reality, which is expected to be applied to various fields. In this paper, we propose a novel emotion classification based on CNN with pupil size variation signals which include not only various ocular feature information but also time information. As a result, compared to previous studies using the same database, the proposed method showed improved results of 5.99% and 12.98% respectively from arousal and valence emotion classification.

관찰 문제에서 초등학생의 과학 학업성취도에 따른 안구운동 분석 (Analysis of Eye Movement by the Science Achievement Level of the Elementary Students on Observation Test)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference between eye movements according to science achievement of elementary school students in observation situation. Science achievement was based on the results of national achievement test conducted in 2012, a random sampling of classes. As an assessment tool to check observation test, two observation measure problems from TSPS (Test of Science Process Skill; developed in 1994) suitable for eye tracking system are adopted. The subjects of this study were twenty students of sixth grade who agreed to participate in the research. SMI (SensoMotoric Instruments)' iView $X^{TM}$ RED was used to collect eye movement data and Experiment 3.1 and BeGaze 3.1 program were used to plan and analyze experiment. As a result, eye movements in observation test varied greatly in fixation duration, frequency, saccade, saccade velocity and eye blink according to students' science achievement. Based on the result of eye movements analysis, heuristic search eye movement was discussed as an alternative to improve underachievers' science achievement.
