  • Soft errors in memory devices that caused by radiation are the main threat from a reliability point of view. This threat can be commonly overcome with the combination of SEC (Single-Error Correction) codes and scrubbing technique. The interleaving architecture can give memory devices the ability of tolerating these soft errors, especially against multiple-bit soft errors. And the interleaving distance plays a key role in building the tolerance against multiple-bit soft errors. This paper proposes a reliability model of an interleaved memory device which suffers from multiple-bit soft errors and are protected by a combination of SEC code and scrubbing. The proposed model shows how the interleaving distance works to improve the reliability and can be used to make a decision in determining optimal scrubbing technique to meet the demands in reliability.

  • In this paper, we proposed about data error check and correction on channel transmission in the communication system. LDPC codes are used for minimizing channel errors by modeling AWGN Channel as a VDSL system. Because LDPC Codes use low density parity bit, mathematical complexity is low and relating processing time becomes shorten. Also the performance of LDPC code is better than that of turbo code in long code word on iterative decoding algorithm. This algorithm is better than conventional algorithms to correct errors, the proposed algorithm assigns weights for errors concerning parity bits. The proposed weighted Bit-flipping algorithm is better than the conventional Bit-flipping algorithm and we are recognized improve gain rate of 1 dB.

  • In digital mobile communications received speech data are affected by burst errors as well as random errors. To overcome these errors we propose a bit-selective forward error correction scheme for the speech data which is sub-band coded at 13 kbps and transmitted over a 16 kbps channel. For a few error correcting codes the signal-to-noise ratio of error-corrected speech is obtained and compared through the simulation of mobile communication channels.

  • In computer science, an encoding is a standardization of converting information to one format for audio, video or text. Therefore, the encoding information of the data should be known to open and read it and there are algorithms detecting encoder of the data. However, some informations of data could be disappeared by packet loss when transmitted on network, especially, if the data is snatched by packet sniffing or eavesdropping from wireless communications. In this paper, we improve the performance of encoding detection algorithm of 'uchardet' program for multi-byte encoded data with errors based on bit-shift algorithm. To simulate the performance, we generated Korean and Japanese text data with errors that is removed some random bits at random positions. Then the detection algorithm are tested using the data and 'uchardet-bitshift' showed better performance than 'uchardet'. When Korean texts are used, 'uchardet' could detect perfectly with ≤0.005% errors but it showed 0% detection rate with ≥1% errors while 'uchardet-bitshift' detected perfectly with ≤0.05% errors and it showed correct detection cases with ≥1% errors. Japanese texts with errors tend to report falsely as Chinese encoding because Japanese texts include lots of Chinese characters. As a results, we improved encoding detection algorithms by applying bit shift operation.

  • DVC(Distributed Video Coding) technique is a new paradigm, which is based on the Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. DVC offers not only flexible partitioning of the complexity between the encoder and decoder, but also robustness to channel errors due to intrinsic joint source-channel coding. Many conventional research works have been focused on the light video encoder and its rate-distortion performance improvement. However, in this paper, we propose a new DVC codec which is effectively applicable for error-prone environment. The proposed method adopts a quantiser without dead-zone and symmetric Gray code around zero value. Through computer simulations, the proposed method is evaluated by the bit errors position as well as the number of burst bit errors. Additionally, it is shown that the maximum and minimum transmission rate for the given application can be linearly determined by the number of bit errors.

  • We present an approximate DRAM architecture for energy-efficient deep learning. Our key premise is that by bounding memory errors to non-critical information, we can significantly reduce DRAM refresh energy without compromising recognition accuracy of deep neural networks. To validate the key premise, we make extensive Monte-Carlo simulations for several well-known convolutional neural networks such as LeNet, ConvNet and AlexNet with the input of MINIST, CIFAR-10, and ImageNet, respectively. We assume that the highest-order 8-bits (in single precision) and 4-bits (in half precision) are protected from retention errors under the proposed architecture and then, randomly inject bit-errors to unprotected bits with various bit-error-rates. Here, recognition accuracies of the above convolutional neural networks are successfully maintained up to the 10-5-order bit-error-rate. We simulate DRAM energy during inference of the above convolutional neural networks, where the proposed architecture shows the possibility of considerable energy saving up to 10 ~ 37.5% of total DRAM energy.

  • This paper proposes multiple burst error detection and correction scheme for transmission of Huffman coded string. We use bidirectionally decodable codes and introduce insertion of forbidden symbol to find errors. Additional bits are added to original bit streams to correct errors. The total file size id increased but it can detect errors and recover errors real time.

  • BMA, which is generally adopted in low bit-rate motion-compensated coding, performs properly under an assumption of rigid-body motion of moving objects. Since, however, the assumption can not be held in practical coding , the prediction errors with low correlation are generated. For effective transform codings of the interframe prediction errors, we propose a new transform coding technique which decomposes the prediction errors into two sources and then transforms them with DCT and WHT consecutively. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to those of the two conventional algorithms in terms of bit rate and subjective image quality.

  • The problem of fluctuation-induced digital errors in a rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) circuit has been a very important issue. In this work, we calculated the bit error rate of an RSFQ switch used in superconductive arithmetic logic unit (ALU). RSFQ switch should have a very low error rate in the optimal bias. Theoretical estimates of the RSFQ error rate are on the order of $10^{-50}$ per bit operation. In this experiment, we prepared two identical circuits placed in parallel. Each circuit was composed of 10 Josephson transmission lines (JTLs) connected in series with an RSFQ switch placed in the middle of the 10 JTLs. We used a splitter to feed the same input signal to both circuits. The outputs of the two circuits were compared with an RSFQ exclusive OR (XOR) to measure the bit error rate of the RSFQ switch. By using a computerized bit-error-rate test setup, we measured the bit error rate of $2.18{\times}10^{-12}$ when the bias to the RSFQ switch was 0.398 mA that was quite off from the optimum bias of 0.6 mA.

  • In the underwater acoustic communication channels, a multipath reflection becomes the cause of obstacle. To solve this problem, a rake receiver has been required for which one could take the time diversity. However, there is a concern about using incorrect path to recover signals with a high weighting value as underwater acoustic communication channels have severe time-variant property. In order to prevent these problem, a rake receiver is proposed which is based on BER(bit error rate) train sequence duration. The performance is evaluated through lake trials; there are three methods that are a proposed rake receiver, a conventional rake receiver, and a non-rake receiver. As a result, the number of bit errors in the proposed rake receiver, that of bit errors in the conventional rake receiver, and that of bit errors in the non-rake receiver is 8, 45, and 72, respectively.
