Technical design codes of slope stability for port structures were studied by comparing local Korean code with international codes; Japanese, EC and China codes. Three international design codes are based on limit state design method. Although Chinese code was based on the modified Fellenius method in slope stability analyses, it is currently changing to the simplified Bishop method. In Eurocode, the Morgenstern & Price method or the Bishop method is recommended. In Japanese code, however, the modified Fellenius method is preferentially recommended, but the simplified Bishop method could be alternatively used in case of thick sandy ground conditions. As for design parameter determination, Eurocode has stipulated comprehensive partial factors and partial material factors, however Japanese code has clarified empirical partial material factors for each port structure. Chinese code, the minimum ranges of the comprehensive partial factors are stipulated, and the use of the strength index by specific tests is concretely clarified with the safety condition. Case study of slope stability analyses showed the safety factors were higher in order of Chinese, Japanese and Eurocode, respectively.
The slope stability analysis is usually done using the methods of calculation to rupture. The problem lies in determining the critical failure surface and the corresponding factor of safety (FOS). To evaluate the slope stability by a method of limit equilibrium, there are linear and nonlinear methods. The linear methods are direct methods of calculation of FOS but nonlinear methods require an iterative process. The nonlinear simplified Bishop method's is popular because it can quickly calculate FOS for different slopes. This paper concerns the use of inverse analysis by genetic algorithm (GA) to find out the factor of safety for the slopes using the Bishop simplified method. The analysis is formulated to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation and find the critical failure surface and the corresponding safety factor. The results obtained by this approach compared with those available in literature illustrate the effectiveness of this inverse method.
In this paper, a finite element based method far determining factor of safety of slopes which has certain advantages over conventional limit equilibrium methods is described. Particularly, the slope failure behaviour considering different seepage conditions is produced by finite element method using strength reduction technique. It is shown that both the failure mechanism and the safety factor that are analyzed by the FEM using strength reduction technique are an effective means of slope stability analysis. And the stability of a slope with rising water table and rapid drawdown are analyzed and the results are compared with the simplified Bishop Method of the Limit Equilibrium Methods.

This study was performed to investigate the minimum safety factor of embankment in consideration of seismic coefficient by the psuedo-static analysis The variables were cohesion, the internal friction angle, angle of slope, height of seepage, height of embankment, depth of replacement The results obtained were compared with those by Fellenius method, simplified Bishop method and Janbu method. The results were summarized as follows: 1.The increasing rate of the minimum safety factor with the increasing of cohesion appeared larger in Fellenius method and Bishop method than in Janbu method. And that with the increasing of the internal friction angle appeared the lowest value in Janbu method. The minimum safety factor was influenced larger on the internal friction angle than on cohesion. 2.The variation of the minimum safety factor with the height of seepage at 0m and 5 m was nearly similar to Fellenius method, Bishop method and Janbu method. On the other hand, it was decreased suddenly at 25 m. 3.The minimum safety factor with the height of embankment was decreased remarkably under 10 m with the increasing of seismic coefficient. But, it was decreased slowly more than 10 m. As the height of embankment was low, the influence of cohesion appeared larger. 4.In heigher case of the depth of replacement, the phenomenon of reduction of the minimum safety factor appeared remarkably with seismic coefficient increased. And in lower case of the depth of replacement, the minimum safety factor was similar in Fellenius method and Bishop mehtod. But it appeared larger in Bishop method and Janbu method than in Fellenius method with the depth of replacement increased. 5.As the cohesion and the internal friction angle were large, the phenomenon of reduction of the minimum safety factor with the increasing of seismic coefficient appeared remarkably. Also, the influence of seismic coefficient in minimum safety factor appeared larger with the soil parameter increased. 6.When the seismic coefficient was considerated, investigation of the structural body on the slope stability appeared profitably in Fellenius method and Janbu method than in Bishop method.
This paper describes a simplified design method of stabilizing piles based on an experimental tests and an analytical study which can take into account the safety factor of slope and pile spacing. The nonlinear characteristics of the soil-pile interaction for stabilizing piles are modeled by using load transfer method. The interaction factors due to pile spacing and cap rigidity were estimated by using a three dimensional nonlinear finite element approach and laboratory tests. Based on the results obtained, the interaction factors are proposed quantitatively for one-row pile groups with spacing-to-diameter ratios varying far 2.5 to 7.0. The Bishop's simplified method of slope stability analysis is extended to incorporate the soil-pile interaction and determine the safety factor of the reinforced slope. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach is in relatively good agreement with the results of centrifuge tests and field tests and three dimensional finite element analyses.

This study was performed to provide the design method for soil structure which guarantees proper safety with uncertainty of soil parameters. For this purpose, the effect of uncertainty of soil parameters for slope stability was analyzed by Bishop's simplified method and Monte Carlo simulation(MC). And reliability analysis program, RESFEM, was developed by combining elastic theory, MC, FEM, SFEM, and reliability, which can consider uncertainty of soil parameters. For factor of safety(FS) 1.0 and 1.2 by Bishop's simplified method, the probability of failure(Pf) was analyzed with varying coefficient of variation(c.o.v.) of soil parameters. The Pf increased as c.o.v. of soil parameters increased. This implies that FS is not the absolute index of slope safety, and even if FS is same, it has different Pf according to c.o.v. of soil parameters. The RESFEM was able to express the Pf at each element in slope quantitatively according to uncertainty of soil parameters. The variation of Pf with uncertainty of soil parameters was analyzed by RESFEM, and it was shown that the Pf increased as the c.o.v. of soil parameters increased.
Reliability analyses of sixteen domestic design cases of open cell caisson breakwaters against circular sliding failure were conducted in this study. For the reliability analyses, uncertainties of parameters of soils, mound, and concrete cap were assessed. Bishop simplified method was used to obtain load and resistance of open cell caisson breakwater for randomly generated open cell caisson breakwater. Sufficient number of Monte Carlo simulations were conducted for randomly generated open cell caisson breakwaters, and statistical analysis was conducted on loads and resistances collected from the large number of Monte Carlo simulations. Probability of failure produced from Monte Carlo simulation has a nonconvergence issue for very low probability of failure; therefore, First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) was conducted using the statistical characteristics of loads and resistances of open cell caisson breakwaters. In addition, effects of safety factor, uncertainties of load and resistance, and correlation between load and resistance on reliability of open cell caisson breakwaters against circular sliding failure were examined.

In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) and multiple regression (MR) models were developed to predict the critical factor of safety ($F_s$) of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces. To achieve this, the values of $F_s$ in 5184 nos. of homogeneous finite slopes having different slope, soil and earthquake parameters were calculated by using the Simplified Bishop method and the minimum (critical) $F_s$ for each of the case was determined and used in the development of the ANN and MR models. The results obtained from both the models were compared with those obtained from the calculations. It is found that the ANN model exhibits more reliable predictions than the MR model. Moreover, several performance indices such as the determination coefficient, variance account for, mean absolute error, root mean square error, and the scaled percent error were computed. Also, the receiver operating curves were drawn, and the areas under the curves (AUC) were calculated to assess the prediction capacity of the ANN and MR models developed. The performance level attained in the ANN model shows that the ANN model developed can be used for predicting the critical $F_s$ of the homogeneous finite slopes subjected to earthquake forces.

In the present study, a searching technique for critical slip surface in two dimensional slope stability analysis is proposed. The failure surface generation and analysis has been usually limited to simple geometric shapes. However, more random surfaces need to be examined for some particular ground conditions. For this purpose, random searching technique is developed using genetic algorithm. The generalized limit equilibrium method is employed as the method of stability analysis. Using this technique, the factor of safety is compared with the result by using simplified Bishop's method. In addition, the convergent trend of fitness value is analyzed.
