A comparison is made of the heat loss from a hollow cylinder, computed using an one-dimensional analytic method and a two-dimensional separation of variables scheme. For a two-dimensional analysis, the temperature of the inner surface as a boundary condition can be varied along the length of the cylinder by varing the temperature variation factor, b. Comparisons of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder using these two methods are given as a function of non-dimensional cylinder length, the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius, temperature variation factor and Biot number. The result shows that the value of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder obtained using the one-dimensional analytic method becomes close to the value given by the two-dimensional separation of variables scheme as the value of Biot number and the non-dimensional hollow cylinder length increase and as the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius decreases.
Heat loss, fin effectiveness and efficiency of a plate fin are investigated as a function of non-dimensional fin length and Biot number using a two-dimensional separation of variables method. The value of temperature of the left side is set to be different from that of the right side for this plate fin to satisfy the real physical condition. Also temperature distribution within this plate fin is listed. One of the results shows that the fin can be considered to be useful in view of fin effectiveness on the given range of Biot number when non-dimensional fin length is larger than 3.
Both 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are used for a rectangular fin optimization. Optimum heat loss is taken as 98% of the maximum heat loss. Temperature profile using 2-D analytic method and relative error of temperature along the fin length between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented. Increasing rate of the optimum heat loss with the variation of Biot number and decreasing rate of that with the variation of the fin base length are listed. Optimum fin tip length using 2-D analytic method and relative error of that between 1-D and 2-D analytic methods are presented as a function of Biot numbers ratio.
In this paper, the extended Biot's semilinear model was developed. Combining the extended Biot model with the dynamic equation yields the nonlinear wave equation in poproelastic sound absorbing materials. Both perturbation and matching techniques are used to find solutions for nonlinear wave equations. By comparing results between linear and nonlinear wave solutions, characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound abosrbing materials have been studied. Nonlinear waves were found to be attenuated faster than the linear ones. A maximum amplitude of the nonlinear wave occurred near its surface boundaries and decay quickly with distance from the surface. It has also been found that, if the amplitudes of linear waves are known at the surface boundaries, those of nonlinear ones can be determined. This will be the basis of finding effects of nonlinearity on the absorption coefficient and the transmission loss.

In this paper, the influence of heating medium on the thermal diffusivities of fish meat paste products was studied. Model products were heated in boiling water, saturated steam and soybean oil. The differences in temperature raise of the products were interpreted with Biot number of the products. Because of the large overall heat transfer coefficient of heating medium, the temperature raise of the products in boiling water and saturated steam was fast and the Biot number of the products could be recognized as infinite. But the temperature raise of the products in soybean oil was slow and the Biot number of the products was less than 50.

This study deals with the unsteady close-contact melting of solid blocks on a flat surface subject to convective heating. Normalizing the model equations in reference to the steady solution successfully leads them to cover constant heat flux and isothermal limits at small and large extremes of the Biot number, respectively. The resulting equations admit a compactly expressed analytical solution, which includes the previous solutions as a subset. Based on the steady solution, the characteristics of close-contact melting can be categorized into constant heat flux, transition, and isothermal regimes, the boundaries of which appear to be nearly independent of the contact force. The unsteady solutions corresponding to Biot numbers in the transition regime show intermediate behaviors between those of the two limits. With a proper approximation, the present solution procedure can cope with the case of variable fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient. Regardless of imposed conditions, the mean normalized Nusselt number during the unsteady process asymptotically approaches to a constant value as the Biot number comes close to each limit.
A convective, radiating rectangular fin is analysed by using the one dimensional analytic method. Instead of constant fin base temperature, heat conduction from the inner wall to the fin base is considered as the fin base boundary condition. Radiation heat transfer is approximately linearized. For different fin tip length, temperature profile along the normalized fin position is shown. The fin tip length for 98% of the maximum heat loss with the variations of fin base length and radiation characteristic number is listed. The maximum heat loss is presented as a function of the fin base length, radiation characteristic number and Biot number.
In this study, a simple numerical approach for a circular tunnel opening in strain-softening surrounding rock is proposed considering out-of-plane stress and seepage force based on Biot's effective stress principle. The plastic region of strain-softening surrounding rock was divided into a finite number of concentric rings, of which the thickness was determined by the internal equilibrium equation. The increments of stress and strain for each ring, starting from the elastic-plastic interface, were obtained by successively incorporating the effect of out-of-plane stress and Biot's effective stress principle. The initial value of the outmost ring was determined using equilibrium and compatibility equations. Based on the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) and generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) failure criteria, the stress-increment approach for solving stress, displacement, and plastic radius was improved by considering the effects of Biot's effective stress principle and the nonlinear degradation of strength and deformation parameters in plastic zone incorporating out-of-plane stress. The correctness of the proposed approach is validated by numerical simulation.

Optimum fin effectiveness of geometrically and thermally asymmetric trapezoidal fins is represented as a function of the ratio of the fin bottom to top Biot numbers, the ratio of the fin tip to top Biot numbers and fin shape factor. Optimum fin effectiveness is taken as 98% of the maximum fin effectiveness by comparing the increasing rate of fin effectiveness with that of dimensionless fin length. For this analysis, two dimensional separation of variables method is used. Also, the value of the slope of upper surface of the fin and fin efficiency corresponding to optimum effectiveness are presented.
In this paper, 3-dimensional magnetic field of coil is analyzed by using biot-sarvart law considering singularity. The RMSP(reduced magnetic scalar potential) arc employed in order to reduce the number of unknown variables in FEM(Finte Element Analysis) or BEM(Boundary Element Method). It Is necessary to calculate magnetic field of souce current when RMSP is used. Biot-savart law is generally used. it is difficult to calculate the field when the source point is in inside the coil. To integrate using gaussian quadrature, the cross section of coil is divided considering the position of field point when field point is inside coil. The proposed method shows good agreement of magnetic field compared with FEMLAB, OPERA3D.
