  • This study is the quasi-experimental research of nonequivalent groups and is designed to measure and compare the awareness and knowledge of 2 groups of undergraduate nursing students - one group who received the education of biomedical ethics and brain-death organ donation and the other group who did not receive the education - regarding biomedical ethics and brain-death organ donation. We conducted this research for the 76 undergraduate nursing students of a certain university located in "C" city. Collected data were analyzed by Fischer's exact test and t-test, ANCOVA using SPSS 23.0 program. As result of the research, it was found that there was significant difference in the knowledge of brain-death organ donation between the above 2 groups (t=35.21, p=.000). In this regard, the education of biomedical ethics should be included in the curriculum of undergraduate nursing students in consideration of factors influencing the awareness of biomedical ethics.

The tools used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test by using SPSS/WIN 12.0 version. Result: When the differences in the consciousness of biomedical ethics of nursing and medical students were compared, statistically significant differences were found in the category of brain death (t=-3.26, p=.001). Statistically significant differences were found in the general characteristics of religion (F=3.05, p=.018), and participation in religious activity (F=3.34, p=.006). Statistically significant differences were found in the characteristics related to the subjects' ethical values such as satisfaction level of a nurse/doctor (F=7.39, p=.000) occupation, the experience of A Patient's Bill of Rights (F=2.97, p=.020), the intention to attend biomedical ethics (F=5.61, p=.000), and the possibility of increasing ethical problems according to the development in the field of medical science (F=7.92, p=.000). Conclusion: An effort should be made to overcome the differences in the perception of biomedical ethics between nursing students and medical students. Moreover, when investigating the course of an integrated education for the establishment of a desirable sense of biomedical ethics, an alternative plan that could promote ethical values must be considered so that the significant variables can promote bioethical perception.

  • This study is a descriptive evaluation of the differences in biomedical ethics consciousness, related knowledge, awareness, and attitude of nursing college students according to the completion of biomedical ethics education. The data were collected from 112 nursing students using self-report questionnaires and analyzed by t-test, Chi-Square test, Fisher's exact probability test and Pearson's correlation coefficient using SPSS 21.0. There were significant differences between the two groups in the sub-domains of biomedical ethics consciousness, artificial insemination, euthanasia and organ transplantation. The biomedical ethics consciousness was positively correlated with attitudes toward human tissue donation and transplantation, awareness of death, and awareness of hospice palliative care. The results of this study showed that after participating in the biomedical ethics education, nursing college students had statistically significant differences in the consciousness of artificial insemination, euthanasia, and organ transplantation. Moreover, the consciousness of biomedical ethics was related to attitude toward human tissue donation and transplantation and awareness of hospice palliative care. Based on the results of this study, we would like to suggest the need for development of various curricula related to death, hospice palliative care, human tissue donation and transplantation in the biomedical ethics curriculum. In addition, as the study was conducted in a single college, it is difficult to generalize the results; therefore, additional studies at different facilities are recommended.

This study selected the first-year 45 students and 63 students who were attending at two 4-year-course nursing colleges as an experimental group and control group, respectively. Then, this study provided the experimental group with the lecture on biomedical ethics for 16 weeks using the movie related to the ethical issues covering 10 areas. Data collection was done for 5 days from August 26, 2013 until December 5, 2013, and conducted pre-post questionnaire survey on the 1st week session and 16th session after explaining there search purpose and getting a written agreement from the subjects. As a result of analysis of the collected data using SPSS Statistics 18, it was found that students' average point of biomedical ethics awareness improved to 3.31 from 3.07; additionally, in the analysis of the data by sub-area, the point in artificial abortion improved to 3.69 from 3.08; artificial insemination from 2.99 to 3.57; fetal diagnosis from 3.10 to 3.45; a newborn's right to life from 3.39 to 3.55 and organ transplant from 3.26 to 3.53, respectively(P<.001). On the contrary, the research results showed that there was no change in the point of the mercy-killing, brain death, and human biotechnology areas, respectively(p>.05). Conclusively, movie-aided education could be diversely used for nursing education provided movie contents should be in accord with a lecture subject in a way that can arouse students' interest and concern, and improve educational satisfaction.
