Gamma ray irradiation mutagenesis was employed to get variants of Pleurotus eryngii with functionally enhanced and improved characteristics. Protoplasts released from P. eryngii were treated with gamma ray radiation under 0.25-1.25 KGy. Protoplast sample that showed fatality rate of 80% at the 0.25 KGy was spreaded on YPMGA (yeast, peptone, malt-extract, glucose, agar) and 500 mycelial colonies were randomly selected from the medium. Of them, 100 mutant strains with mycelial morphology and growth rate that differ to control strain were observed on PDA. The cellulase and laccase activity of 67 gamma ray-irradiated P. eryngii isolates with morphological variation were investigated. Among these, 5 isolates were higher cellulase. In addition, the genetic variation of the mutant strains was analyzed by PCR fingerprinting.

Ultrasonic and magnetic resonance imaging systems are used to visualize the interior states of biological objects. These nondestructive methods have many advantages but too much expensive. And they do not give exact color information and may miss some details. If it is allowed to destruct some biological objects to get the interior and exterior information, constructing 3D image from the series of the sliced sectional images gives more useful information with relatively low cost. In this paper, PC based automatic 3D model generator was developed. The system was composed of three modules. One is the object handling and image acquisition module, which feeds and slices objects sequentially and maintains the paraffin cool to be in solid state and captures the sectional image consecutively. The second is the system control and interface module, which controls actuators for feeding, slicing, and image capturing. And the last is the image processing and visualization module, which processes a series of acquired sectional images and generates 3D graphic model. The handling module was composed of the gripper, which grasps and feeds the object and the cutting device, which cuts the object by moving cutting edge forward and backward. Sliced sectional images were acquired and saved in the form of bitmap file. The 3D model was generated to obtain the volumetric information using these 2D sectional image files after being segmented from the background paraffin. Once 3-D model was constructed on the computer, user could manipulate it with various transformation methods such as translation, rotation, scaling including arbitrary sectional view.
This study was conducted for the isolation, purification, and characterization of a protease from Korean pear, to see its proteolytic activity on chicken actomyosin and to find the optimum pH and temperature of activity on chicken actomyosin. The protease was isolated from crude extract of Korean pear by ammonium sulfate precipitation. Further purification was done by DEAE-Sepharose ion-exchange chromatography, Mono-Q and Mini-Q column chromatography. The purified enzyme gave a single protein band on SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the molecular weight was found to be 38 kDa. The specific activity of purified enzyme was 34,907 unit/mg with 25 fold purification and the yield was 2%. The purified enzyme incubated with chicken actomyosin showed high activity. The optimum pH and temperature for enzyme activity on chicken actomyosin were 6.5 and $70^{\circ}C$, respectively. A protease was purified from Korean pear for the first time and characterized. It was found to be promising for meat tenderization.

The glycoprotein hormone family represents a class of heterodimers, that includes the placental hormone equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and the anterior pituitary hormones- follitropin (FSH), lutropin (LH), and thyrotropin (TSH). The 4 hormones are heterodimers, with a common $\alpha$-subunit and unique $\beta$-subunits. eCG is the most heavily glycosylated of the known pituitary and placental glycoprotein hormones. Recent observations using single chain glycoprotein hormone analogs in which, the $\beta$-and $\alpha$-subunits are linked, implied that heterodimeric-like quaternary configuration is not a prerequisite for receptor/signal transduction. To study the function and signal transduction of tethered rec-eCG, a single chain eCG molecule was constructed and rec-eCG protein was produced. Molecular mass of the single chain is about 45 kDa. All mice were ovulated by tethered rec-eCG treatment. The dual activity of tethered rec-eCG was determined in receptor cell lines of nonequid species; in fact, this dual activity was proven in species other than horse. Tethered rec-eCG in equids does not bind to FSH receptors, suggesting that eCG is primarily an LH-like hormone in the horse. Taken together, these data suggest that tethered rec-eCG has dual activity in nonequid species in vitro. However, it has only LH-like activity in equid species in vitro.
WireWireless sensor networks(WSNs) are generally comprised of densely deployed sensor nodes, which causes highly redundant sensor data transmission and energy waste. Many studies have focused on energy saving in WSNs. However, delay problem also should be taken into consideration for mission-critical applications. In this paper, we propose a BISA (Bio-Inspired Scheduling Algorithm) to reduce the energy consumption and delay for WSNs inspired by biological systems. BISA investigates energy-efficient routing path and minimizes the energy consumption and delay using multi-channel for data transmission. Through simulations, we observe that the BISA archives energy efficiency and delay guarantees.

In order to understand the protein functions that are related to disease, it is important to detect the correlation between amino acid mutations and disease. Many mutation studies about disease-related proteins have been carried out through molecular biology techniques, such as vector design, protein engineering, and protein crystallization. However, experimental protein mutation studies are time-consuming, be it in vivo or in vitro. We therefore performed a bioinformatic analysis of known disease-related mutations and their protein structure changes in order to analyze the correlation between mutation and disease. For this study, we selected 111 diseases that were related to 175 proteins from the PDB database and 710 mutations that were found in the protein structures. The mutations were acquired from the Human Gene Mutation Database (HGMD). We selected point mutations, excluding only insertions or deletions, for detecting structural changes. To detect a structural change by mutation, we analyzed not only the structural properties (distance of pocket and mutation, pocket size, surface size, and stability), but also the physico-chemical properties (weight, instability, isoelectric point (IEP), and GRAVY score) for the 710 mutations. We detected that the distance between the pocket and disease-related mutation lay within $20\;{\AA}$ (98.5%, 700 proteins). We found that there was no significant correlation between structural stability and disease-causing mutations or between hydrophobicity changes and critical mutations. For large-scale mutational analysis of disease-causing mutations, our bioinformatics approach, using 710 structural mutations, called "Structural Mutatomics," can help researchers to detect disease-specific mutations and to understand the biological functions of disease-related proteins.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fasting and postprandial hyperglycemia should be controlled to avoid complications of diabetes mellitus. This study investigated the effects of autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.) berry (AOB) on fasting and postprandial hyperglycemia in mice. MATERIALS/METHODS: In vitro ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory effect of AOB was determined. Maltose solution (2 g/kg) with and without AOB extract at 500 mg/kg or acarbose at 50 mg/kg was orally administered to normal mice after overnight fasting and glucose levels were measured. To study the effects of chronic consumption of AOB, db/db mice received the basal diet or a diet containing AOB extract at 0.4% or 0.8%, or acarbose at 0.04% for 7 weeks. Blood glycated hemoglobin and serum glucose and insulin levels were measured. Expression of adiponectin protein in epididymal white adipose tissue was determined by Western blotting. RESULTS: In vitro inhibitory effect of AOB extract on ${\alpha}$-glucosidase was 92% as strong as that of acarbose. The AOB extract (500 mg/kg) or acarbose (50 mg/kg) significantly suppressed the postprandial rise of blood glucose after maltose challenge and the area under the glycemic response curve in normal mice. The AOB extract at 0.4% or 0.8% of diet or acarbose at 0.04% of diet significantly lowered levels of serum glucose and blood glycated hemoglobin and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance values in db/db mice. The expression of adiponectin protein in adipose tissue was significantly elevated by the consumption of AOB at 0.8% of diet. CONCLUSIONS: Autumn olive (E. umbellata Thunb.) berry may reduce postprandial hyperglycemia by inhibiting ${\alpha}$-glucosidase in normal mice. Chronic consumption of AOB may alleviate fasting hyperglycemia in db/db mice partly by inhibiting ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and upregulating adiponectin expression.
The government has introduced the Regional Innovation System (RIS) to establish regional innovation platforms, leading to the creation of the Bio-PRIDE shared university in the Chungbuk region, centered around the bio-health industry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the educational service quality of the Bio-PRIDE shared university through a qualitative approach. To achieve this, in-depth exploration of the experiences of students participating in the Bio-PRIDE shared university was conducted using Focus Group Interviews (FGI) and telephone interviews. The study identified three main findings: 1) Motivations for student participation included recommendations and support from professors, economic benefits and scholarships, the flexibility and convenience of remote learning, and the appeal of new learning experiences and challenges. 2) Experiences during participation revealed themes such as the effectiveness and challenges of remote classes, the value of providing up-to-date technology and content, student engagement and commitment, and communication and support from faculty. 3) The impact of participation after completing the program highlighted the importance of innovative learning experiences and expanded choices, the significance of information accessibility and learning support, the need for improved promotion and awareness of the shared university, and the necessity for administrative support and communication. In conclusion, the Bio-PRIDE shared university has successfully implemented educational innovation, offering students new learning experiences and contributing to the broadening of their academic perspectives. This study will serve as a foundational resource for improving the educational service quality and ensuring the successful operation of the Bio-PRIDE shared university in the future.

A light guide improves the spatial resolution of a gamma ray imaging system by diffusing the scintillation light. Similarly, light diffusion film, which has been applied to flat-panel-display engineering, spreads the light from the light guide panel. In this study, we adopted light diffusion film for the light guide of a gamma ray imaging system, and evaluated its diffusion characteristics. We compared the light diffusion performance of the film to an ordinary acrylic plate. As a result, the diffusion film widely spreads scintillation light. As for the thickness of the light guide, we acquired more distinct images with three films overlapped than with an acrylic plate. We expect light diffusion film to be a promising candidate for light guides in gamma ray imaging systems.
A pseudoreceptor combines structure-based and ligand-based techniques to represent a unifying concept for both receptor mapping and ligand matching. In this molecular modeling approach, there are opportunities to construct the pseudoreceptor models using a set of small molecules. To build a reliable pseudoreceptor model, we need a set of ligand molecules with known affinity (biological activity) to generate 3D bioactive conformation for each of these ligand molecules. Several software packages are available to generate a pseudoreceptor model and this can provide an entry point for structure based drug discovery in cases where receptor structure information is not available. In this review, we presented the concept of pseudoreceptor, as well as discussed about various software packages available to generate a pseudoreceptor model.
