For next-generation electronic applications, human-machine interface devices have recently been demonstrated such as the wearable computer as well as the electronic skin (e-skin). For integration of those systems, it is essential to develop many kinds of components including displays, energy generators and sensors. In particular, flexible sensing devices to detect some stimuli like strain, pressure, light, temperature, gase and humidity have been investigated for last few decades. Among many condidates, a pressure sensing device based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) is one of interesting structure in flexible touch displays, bio-monitoring and e-skin because of their flexibility. In this study, we have investigated a flexible e-skin based on highly sensitive, pressure-responsive OFETs using microstructured ferroelectric gate dielectrics, which simulates both rapidly adapting (RA) and slowly adatping (SA) mechanoreceptors in human skin. In SA-type static pressure, furthermore, we also demonstrate that the FET array can detect thermal stimuli for thermoreception through decoupling of the input signals from simultaneously applied pressure. The microstructured highly crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) possessing piezoelectric-pyroelectric properties in OFETs allowed monitoring RA- and SA-mode responses in dyanamic and static pressurizing conditions, which enables to apply the e-skin to bio-monitoring of human and robotics.
The results of our observation in May 2000 indicated that the SeaWiFS algorithm (O'Reilley et al., 1998), which was adopted for OSMI data processing, overestimated the actual chlorophyll values. This was rather unexpected in that there were good reasons to expect that the bio-optical properties of East/Japan Sea belonged to Case 1 water and in such case, the OC2 algorithm would give unbiased estimates of actual chlorophyll a values. In November 2000, a cruise conducted bio-optical surveys in the same area. This time we added HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) method for measuring chlorophyll a concentration to the standard fluorometric method, which we hale been using during the past Fluorometric method with acidification is known to result in under/overestimation of chlorophyll values in many parts of the world oceans, while it is easier and cheaper than HPLC method. To our surprise, the comparison of HPLC chlorophyll and fluorometric chlorophyll values show that fluorometric values gave an underestimation up to 50%. This error was due to the presence of accessory pigments such as chlorophyll b. Considering this error, our precious result of May 2000(Yoo et al., 2000) might have to be reinterpreted. Calculation of reflectance at 490 and 555nm, however, indicated that this is not still enough to explain the discrepancies.
A bio-optic survey was made in the Yellow Sea in May, 1998 for OSMI cal/val and application project. Optical measurements were made in nine stations. From these measurements, apparent and inherent optical properties such as $K_d$, R, a, and $b_b$ were estimated. The patterns of reflectance indicated that all three major constituents, namely, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and CDOM were active in determining the optical properties in the Yellow Sea. Their relative contribution was different among the stations. All the stations had high backscattering and their values fell in Case 2 category. Although the total absorption was very high, it could not be explained by the level of CDOM concentration. It is suggested that the suspended sediment might be highly absorptive and further study is needed to investigate the optical properties of the suspended sediments.

Contamination by pesticides is an everincreasing problem associated with fields of environmental management and healthcare. Accordingly, appropriate treatments are in demand. Pesticide detection methods have been researched extensively, aimed at making the detection convenient, fast, cost-effective, and easy to use. Among the various detecting strategies, paper-based assay is potent for real-time pesticide sensing due to its unique advantages including disposability, light weight, and low cost. In this study, a paper-based sensor for chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate pesticide, has been developed by layering three sheets of patterned plates. In colorimetric quantification of pesticides, the blue color produced by the interaction between acetylcholinesterase and indoxyl acetate is inhibited by the pesticide molecules present in the sample solutions. With the optimized paper-based sensor, the pesticide is sensitively detected (limit of detection =8.60 ppm) within 5min. Furthermore, the shelf life of the device is enhanced to 14 days after from the fabrication, by treating trehalose solution onto the deposited reagents. We expect the paper-based device to be utilized as a first-screening analytic device for water quality monitoring and food analysis.

Non-uniform optical taper waveguides have been widely used as devices for high-efficiency mode coupling, as they are integrated with single-mode optical fibers or photonic crystal waveguides. In this paper, we present a new platform for chemical sensing and bio-sensing using optical taper waveguides with these characteristics. The principle of operation is based on the coupling efficiency and interference properties of optical directional coupler (DC) and multi-mode interference coupler (MMIC). First, the curvature characteristics of taper sections of DC and MMIC is explained, and the design specifications of optimized taper waveguide to increase waveguide sensitivity is selected. Next, the sensor response to the change in refractive index of sensing analyte is numerically analyzed. Numerical results show that as the length of couplers increases, the effective index per change in refractive index unit (RIU) of analyte increases, and that sensitivity can be tuned using taper DC and MMIC design techniques.

To build effective u-healthcare system based-on smart-cloth, design of hardware and software modules for suitable smart-cloth is needed. And a gateway smart-phone program for sensing signal's collecting and processing is needed to send sensing bio-signal from smart-cloth to sever. To do this, it is an important to design and describe modules well for having no difficult problems when implementing later. Also, if medical team do not monitor bio-signals sending from smart-phone frequently and these signals' change values which diagnose automatically due to building expert system based on rules/facts is informed for users, it will be an useful u-healthcare system. Therefore in this paper, by presenting design method of u-healthcare system hardware and software modules based on smart-cloth which prepared these functions, this design method is showed for applying a common use u-healthcare system's production usefully.
Various methods to detect the phytoplankton/red tide blooms in the oceanic waters have been developed and tested on satellite ocean color imagery since the last two and half decades, but accurate detection of blooms with these methods remains challenging in optically complex turbid waters, mainly because of the eventual interference of absorbing and scattering properties of dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matters with these methods. The present study introduces a new method called Red tide Index (Rl), providing indices which behave as a good measure of detecting red tide algal blooms in high scattering and absorbing waters of the Korean South Sea and Yellow Sea. The effectiveness of this method in identifying and locating red tides is compared with the standard Ocean Chlorophyll 4 (OC4) bio-optical algorithm applied to SeaWiFS ocean imagery, acquired during two bloom episodes on 27 March 2002 and 28 September 2003. The result revealed that OC4 bio-optical algorithm falsely identifies red tide blooms in areas abundance in colored dissolved organic and particulate inorganic matter constituents associated with coastal areas, estuaries and river mouths, whereas red tide index provides improved capability of detecting, predicting and monitoring of these blooms in both clear and turbid waters.
A 64-channel magnetocardiogram (MCG) system using low-noise superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) planar gradiometers was developed for the measurements of cardiac magnetic fields generated by the heart electric activity. Owing to high flux-to-voltage transfers of double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS) sensors, the flux-locked loop electronics for SQUID operation could be made simpler than that of conventional DC SQUIDs, and the SQUID control was done automatically through a fiber-optic cable. The pickup coils are first-order planar gradiometers with a baseline of 4 em. The insert has 64 planar gradiometers as the sensing channels and were arranged to measure MCG field components tangential to the chest surface. When the 64-channel insert was in operation everyday, the average boil-off rate of the dewar was 3.6 Lid. The noise spectrum of the SQUID planar gradiometer system was about 5 fT$_{rms}$/$\checkmark$Hz at 100 Hz, operated inside a moderately shielded room. The MCG measurements were done at a sampling rate of 500 Hz or 1 kHz, and realtime display of MCG traces and heart rate were displayed. After the acquisition, magnetic field mapping and current mapping could be done. From the magnetic and current information, parameters for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia were evaluated to be compared with other diagnostic methods.

As nanoscience and nanotechnology advance, techniques for selective pattern growth have attracted significant attention. Silica nanoparticles (NPs) are used as a promising nanomaterials for bio-labeling, bio-imaging, and bio-sensing. In this study, silica NPs were synthesized by a sol-gel process using a modified Stöber method. In addition, the selective pattern growth of silica NPs was achieved by the surface functionalization of the substrate using a micro-contact printing technique of a hydrophobic treatment. The particle size of the as-synthesized silica NPs and morphology of selective pattern growth of silica NPs were characterized by FE-SEM. The contact angle by surface functionalization of the substrate was investigated using a contact angle analyzer. As a result, silica NPs were not observed on the hydrophobic surface of the OTS solution treatment, which was coated by spin coating. In contrast, the silica NPs were well coated on the hydrophilic surface after the KOH solution treatment. FE-SEM confirmed the selective pattern growth of silica NPs on a hydrophilic surface, which was functionalized using the micro-contact printing technique. If the characteristics of the selective pattern growth of silica NPs can be applied to dye-doped silica NPs, they will find applications in the bio imaging, and bio sensing fields.
One of the most important tasks of ocean color observations is to determine the distribution of phytoplankton primary production. A variety of bio-optical algorithms have been developed estimate primary production from these parameters. In this communication, we investigated the possibility of using a novel universal approximator-support vector machines (SVMs)-as the nonlinear transfer function between oceanic primary production and the information that can be directly retrieved from satellite data. The VGPM (Vertically Generalized Production Model) dataset was used to evaluate the proposed approach. The PPARR2 (Primary Production Algorithm Round Robin 2) dataset was used to further compare the precision between the VGPM model and the SVM model. Using this SVM model to calculate the global ocean primary production, the result is 45.5 PgC $yr^{-1}$, which is a little higher than the VGPM result.
