  • People are willing to spend more for their health. Traditional medical services are hospital-centric and patients obtain their treatments mainly at the clinics or hospitals. As people age, more medical services are needed to exceed the potentials of this hospital-centric service model. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of CardioSentinal, a 24-hour heart care and monitoring system. CardioSentinal is designed for in-home and daily medical services. It mainly focuses on the outpatients and elderly. CardioSentinal is an interdisciplinary system that integrates recent advances in many fields such as bio-sensors, small-range wireless communications, pervasive computing, cellular networks and modern data centers. We conducted numerous clinic trials for CardioSentinal. Experimental results show that the sensitivity and accuracy are quite high. It is not as good as the professional measurements in hospital due to harsh environments but the system provides valuable information for heart diseases with low-cost and extreme convenience. Some early experiences and lessons in the work will also be reported.

  • As small sized bio-sensors and digital yarns are developed, digital wear measuring vital signs can be used for individuals' health, the elderly care and sports activities. This paper discusses a database structure for analyzing stress state, pulses, positions, exercise amount of user based on vital signs measured for 24 hours measured by the wear and GPS information, and a storage for storing XML documents following a standard HL7 meta-model. By analyzing the stored information, the system identifies the stress state and exercise amount of users. Pulses, exercise intensity and emergency situations can be also detected by the system in real time. This paper discusses the implementation of a system enabling to acquire and analyze vital signals to understand user behavior patterns.

  • Recent developments in microfluidic devices based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technique find many practical applications, which include electronic chip cooling devices, power MEMS devices, micro sensors, and bio-medical devices among others. For the design of such micro devices, flows characteristics inside a microchannel have to be clarified which exhibit somewhat different characteristics compared to conventional flows in a macrochannel. In the present study microchannels of various hydraulic diameters are fabricated on a silicon wafer to study the pressure drop characteristics. The effect of abrupt contraction and expansion is also studied. It is found from the results that the friction factor in a straight microchannel is about 15% higher than that in a conventional macrochannel, and the loss coefficients in abrupt expansion and contraction are about 10% higher than that obtained through conventional flow analysis.

  • Polypyrrole microactuators have been fabricated by the standard surface micromachining method combined with the electropolymerization of polypyrrole. The fundamental structure to verify the feasibility of the fabrication process is polypyrrole cantilever. Based on these process, polypyrrole grippers and valves for the manipulation of the cell have been fabricated. Grippers have the structure of bone and muscle which are rigid polymers and polypyrrole, respectively. Valves have the assembled structure of channels with polypyrrole cantilevers. The proposed fabrication process and structures are expected to be used for bio-related applications, for example, the cell manipulation.

  • This article describes a novel method for the detection of amyloid-${\beta}$($A{\beta}$) peptide that utilizes a photo-sensitive field-effect transistor (p-FET). According to a recent study, $A{\beta}$ protein has been known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Accordingly, we investigated the variation of photo current generated from p-FET with and without intracellular magnetic beads conjugated with $A{\beta}$ peptides, which are placed on the p-FET sensing areas. The decrease of photo current was observed due to the presence of the magnetic beads on the channel region. Moreover, a similar characteristic was shown when the Raw 264 cells take in magnetic beads treated with $A{\beta}$ peptide. This means that it is possible to simply detect a certain protein using magnetic beads and a p-FET device. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest that our method could detect tiny amounts of $A{\beta}$ for early diagnosis of AD using the p-FET devices.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and characteristics of a piezoelectric valve using MCA(Multilayer ceramic actuator). The MCA valve, which has the buckling effect, consists of three separate structures; MCA, a valve actuator die and an a seat die. The design of the actuator die was done by FEM modeling and displacement measurement, respectively. The valve seat die with 6 trenches was made, and the actuator die, which is driven to MCA under optimized conditions, was also fabricated. After Si-wafer direct bonding between the seat die and the actuator die, MCA was also anodic bonded to the seat/actuator die structure. PDMS sealing pad was fabricated to minimize a leak-rate. It was also bonded to seat die and SUS package. The MCA valve shows a flow rate of 9.13 seem at a supplied voltage of 100 V with a 50% duty cycle, maximum non-linearity was 2.24% FS and leak rate was $3.03{\times}10^{-8}pa{\codt}m^{3}/cm^{2}$. Therefore, the fabricated MCA valve is suitable for a variety of flow control equipment, a medical bio-system, automobile and air transportation industry.

  • A disposable electrochemical immunosensor system has been developed for the detection of herbicide in aqueous samples. Disposable screen printed carbon electrodes(SPCE) were used as basic electrodes and an enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and anti-herbicide antibodies was immobilised on to the working electrode of SPCE by using avidin-biotin coupling reactions. An herbicide-glucose oxidase conjugates have been used for the competitive immunoreaction with sample herbicides. The enzymatic reaction between the conjugated glucose oxidase and glucose added generates hydrogen peroxide, which was reduced by the peroxidase immobilised. The latter process caused an electrical current change, due to direct re-reduction of peroxidase by a direct electron transfer mechanism, which was measured to determine the herbicides in the sample. The optimal operational condition was found to be: $20\;{\mu}gl-1$ deglycosylated avidin loading to the working electrode and working potential +50 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The total assay time was 15 min after sample addition. The detection limits for herbicides, atrazine and simazine, were found to be 3 ppb and 10 ppb, respectively.

  • Predicting the user's reaction to the game at the stage of developing the game is important because it is related to the popularity of the game. In this paper, we propose a system that can collect and analyze game user's biometric information in a non-invasive way. To this end, we developed a mouse with skin conductance, pressure, gyroscope, and accelerometer sensor using Arduino. In order to verify the usefulness of this system, the subject was experimented with playing the first person shooter game with this mouse. We analyzed the gameplay videos recorded during Blizzard's 'OverWatch' and the bio-information collected from various sensors in the mouse.

  • Copper composite materials have attracted wide attention for energy applications. Especially $CuInS_2$ has a desirable direct band gap of 1.5 eV, which is well matched with the solar spectrum. $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles could make it possible to develop color-tunable $CuInS_2$ nanoparticle emitter in the near-infrared region (NIR) for energy application and bio imaging sensors. In this paper, $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by thermo-decomposition methods. Surface modification of $CuInS_2$ nanoparticles were carried out with various semiconductor materials (CdS, ZnS) for enhanced optical properties. Surface modification and silica coating of hydrophobic nanoparticles could be dispersed in polar solvent for potential applications. Their optical properties were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The structures of silica coated $CuInS_2$ were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, $NAD^+$, and its reduced form, NADH, play important roles as coenzymes in many enzymatic reactions. Electrochemical methods for $NAD^+$ or NADH detection or generation are drawn attention because it can provide the simple and low cost platform with fairly good sensitivity. In this study, the polysiloxane viologen polymer/diaphorase/hydrophilic polyurethane (PSV/DI/HPU) modified electrodes were simply prepared and demonstrated for bio-electrocatalytic $NAD^+$ sensors. The electrodes were co-immobilized with diaphorase and polysiloxane viologen polymer as an electron mediator followed by the overcoating with HPU membrane. The mixture of the enzyme and the electron mediator was well stabilized within HPU membrane and exhibited good reversibility and stability. The sensitivity was 0.2 $nA{\cdot}{\mu}M^{-1}$ and the detection limit was 28 ${\mu}M$ with a response time of 50 s ($t_{90%}$). The capability for NADH sensor was also observed on the PSV/DI/HPU electrode.
