  • In this paper, we propose a 3-D range finding method for situation that stereo camera has small translational motion. Binocular stereo generally tends to produce stereo correspondence errors and needs huge amount of computation. The former drawback is because the additional constraints to regularize the correspondence problem are not always true for every scene. The latter drawback is because they use either correlation or optimization to find correct disparity. We present a method which overcomes these drawbacks by moving the stereo camera actively. The method utilized a motion parallax acquired by monocular motion stereo to restrict the search range of binocular disparity. Using only the uniqueness of disparity makes it possible to find reliable binocular disparity. Experimental results with real scene are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method.

  • A volumetric three-dimensional (3D) display system was presented, which utilizes a rotating two-dimensional (2D) display panel of light emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate more than 10 million volume pixels (voxels) within a cylindrical volume of 165 mm in height and 292 mm in diameter. Due to persistence of vision, momentarily addressed voxel information is perceived and fused into a 3D image. Important cues for depth perception, such as binocular parallax, accommodation, convergence and motion parallax are satisfied automatically and naturally, thus it is suitable for individual or group viewing, without the need for any special visual aids.

  • This paper introduces an effective method for generating 3D stereoscopic images that gives immersive 3D experiences to viewers using mobile-based binocular HMDs. Most of previous AR systems with monocular cameras have a common limitation that the same real-world images are provided to the viewer's eyes without parallax. In this paper, based on the assumption that viewers focus on the marker in the scenario of marker based AR, we recovery the binocular disparity about a camera image and a virtual object using the pose information of the marker. The basic idea is to generate the binocular disparity for real-world images and a virtual object, where the images are placed on the 2D plane in 3D defined by the pose information of the marker. For non-marker areas in the images, we apply blur effects to reduce the visual discomfort by decreasing their sharpness. Our user studies show that the proposed method for 3D stereoscopic image provides high depth feeling to viewers compared to the previous binocular AR systems. The results show that our system provides high depth feelings, high sense of reality, and visual comfort, compared to the previous binocular AR systems.

  • In this paper the authors propose a model about interaction of inner modules of autonomous robot which is possible to team walking action without external and explicit supervisor signal. A main feature of the model is that completed and fixed module for estimating robot's motion parameter by utilizing binocular parallax can be a supervisor for the module to team the walking action.

  • Research on shooting conditions of 3D program production for natural 3D images has been continued. In the study, it has been shown that orthostereoscopic conditions bring about no inconsistency between depth information from perspective of the lenses and that from binocular parallax. A newly developed 3D camera is based on orthostereoscopic conditions, which result in compactness of the camera (weight 8). At the same time, the new camera has a zooming function and is valuable in many ways, especially sport broadcasting. In this paper, we give an outline of the newly developed 3D HDTV camera and the results of subjective evaluation tests on psychological effects of the images shot by the camera. These tests show that the images shot by this camera are more powerful and comfortable to view than those shot by existing 3D cameras.

  • We present a method to reproduce in-between views from captured stereo images to control depth feeling that a user can perceive on a 3D display. The stereo images captured from a pair of cameras have a fixed viewpoint and a screen parallax which depend on the physical position and the distance between the cameras. In this paper, we produce stereo images of an intermediate viewpoint between two original cameras by a view interpolation on the input stereo images. Furthermore, the camera separation of the reproduced stereo images can be controlled by a linear interpolation coefficient used by the view interpolation. By using the proposed method, stereo images can be reproduced where the depth feeling and a three dimensional effect is suitable for the individual's eye separation or the characteristic of an application.

  • Recently, technology of Virtual Reality(VR) based on HMD among various kinds of VR implemented products has received widespread attention. Major IT-related companies around the world participated in VR HMD research and development. Therefore, the possibility of the spread of VR HMD has been highly praised. Demands of VR HMD products using Smart Phone has been especially increased so that it is required to create a high quality of VR contents. The purpose of study in this paper is to apply the depth value of stereoscopic to VR HMD. To implement it, we analyzed VR HMD optical system and converted an experimental image to virtual depth caused by binocular disparity based on the result of calculating NPP(Native Pixel Parallax). We produced the image of stereoscopic applied with the value converted and applied to VR HMD. This study is expected to be utilized as a VR content creation field of quantitative data.

  • Most 3D displays that are currently in the market adopt the binocular disparity method creating a different image for the left and right eye for a 3 dimensional effect. However, commercialized 3D image output devices lack in performance making it uncomfortable for the viewer and restrict the viewer to certain positions. In this paper, we propose a single-cell polarized lens type stereoscopic system which has a smaller viewing angle and reduced crosstalk, with improved light penetration compared to existing double-cell structures; and analyzed the single-cell polarized lens type stereoscopic system properties, and conducted an effect analysis of performance improvement compared to the dual-cell type. Results showed that the single-cell type had a 25% improved performance, and the 3D crosstalk index which is an important index for quality characteristics of stereoscopic systems, increased over about 37%, compared to the dual-cell type.

  • This paper proposes a management method for a coastal black pine forest landscape considering the parallax effect. For the study, 10 coastal black pine forests in Gangneung were investigated about the average width of the coastal forests, the average diameters, and the intervals of the pines. Categorizations were realized for the 3 types of scene(sea, field, mountain, residential area, commercial area), diameter(16cm, 22cm, 28cm) and interval(5m, 7m, 10m) to produce a total of 45 scenic simulations. An investigation was made on the scenic preferences using 45 simulation images with S.D, and Likert Scales. The results were as follows: According the comparison of scenic preferences, natural landscapes(sea, field, and mountain) ranked high among preferences, with fabricated landscapes(residential area, commercial area) ranked low. The highest scenic preferences were shown with the seascape and an interval of 7m between the trees. On the contrary, the interrelationship was very low between the visual quantity of the scenic's elements(green, sky, building, road etc.) and the scenic preferences. As the results of the factor analysis, the 3 sense factors of "Depth(78.0%)" "Diversity(l5.6%)" and "Spatiality(6.4%)" explained coastal scenic preferences. "Spatiality" showed significant differences at intervals of 5~7m, and 10m between trees. This shows coastal forest management based on the interval of 10m standard affecting scenic preference.
