An Effect of Safety Leadership Coaching Program on Safety Behaviors of Construction Workers: Based on Behavior Based Safety (안전 리더십 코칭 프로그램이 건설 현장 근로자들의 안전 행동에 미치는 효과 : 행동기반 안전관리(Behavior Based Safety: BBS)를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effect of safety leadership coaching program on managers' safety management and workers' safety behaviors in construction site. Three or four managers and about one hundred workers at each site participated in this study. Safety leadership coaching program consisted of safety leadership education, goal setting, self-monitoring and feedback on workers' safety behavior, reward for three safety management behaviors; (1) safety observations of workers safety behavior and (2) providing positive feedback on safe behavior (3) providing corrective feedback on risk behavior and daily safety education for workers. Dependent variables were the percentage of safe behaviors of workers and frequency of managers' safety management behaviors. A nonconcurrent AB multiple baseline design across settings was adopted. After baseline(A), safety leadership coaching program (B) was introduced to each site. The results showed that safety leadership coaching program was effective to increase managers' and workers' safety behaviors. These results suggest that safety leadership coaching program developed in this study would be an alternative treatment technique to improve construction safety management. In addition, the implications, limitations of this study, and future studies are discussed.

An Effect of Safety Coaching Program on Safety Behavior and Climate -Focusing on Expressway Safety Patrol- (안전 코칭 프로그램이 안전행동과 안전 분위기에 미치는 효과 -고속도로 안전순찰원을 중심으로-)

  • This study investigated the impact of a safety coaching program on the safety behavior and safety climate among expressway safety patrols. Four to seven patrols from each of the three branches participated in this study. The safety coaching program was developed based on the GROW model, with main contents including recognizing individual differences, exploring safety values, communicating near-misses, providing effective and efficient feedback, employing non-violent communication, and fostering commitment toward safety behaviors. Additionally, each session included self-monitoring and peer review of each item based on a critical behavior checklist developed for this study, with challenging goals set based on the monitoring and review. The safety coaching program comprised six sessions in three branches, while three other branches were assigned as a control group. A non-equivalent control group experimental design was applied. Dependent variables included observed and perceived safety behavior, safety climate, psychological safety, and feedback. The results indicated that the safety coaching program effectively increased patrols' safety behavior and safety climate. Furthermore, psychological safety and feedback improved. These findings suggest that the developed safety coaching program could serve as an alternative method to enhance safety management for expressway safety patrols. Finally, the implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Effect of Behavior Based Safety Program on Safety Behavior, Safety Climate and its Satisfaction (행동기반안전관리 프로그램이 안전행동, 안전 분위기 및 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has performed to identify the effect of safety behavior, safety climate and its satisfaction through the Behavior Based Safety Program for 5 sites of the same Company. The study result indicated that the level of recognized safety behavior, climate and its satisfaction improved by conducting observation of worker behavior, jobsite feedback, displaying feedback chart, safety training, behavior modification committee. Additionally, the participation level of safety activity and conformity level of safety rule improved. The recognized level of safety climate improved together with recognized safety value by management, safety participation of direct boss, communication with each other to be dealt with safety matter, safety training material to be contained unsafe behavior and practical hazard, understanding and conducting safety standard. In addition, The recognized level of satisfaction improved together with safety behavior and climate. As a result, this program provided an opportunities to correct worker's unsafe behavior to safe behavior in conjunction with increasing number of observation, providing additional time to have a safety check, safety suggestion to improve work situation and a permit to work rule. It will be integrated into health and safety management system to be able to reduce industrial accident.

The Effect of Behavior Based Safety Program on Safe Behaviors of Bus Drivers and Passengers: A Field Case Study (행동기반 안전관리(Behavior Based Safety: BBS) 프로그램이 버스 기사 및 승객의 안전행동에 미치는 효과 검증: 현장 사례 연구)

  • This study examined the effect of Behavior Based Safety(BBS) program on safe behaviors of bus drivers and passengers. Four male bus drivers working at a H transportation company situated in Seoul participated in this study. BBS program consisted of education, prompts, and self-monitoring with goal setting. Dependent variables were the percentage of two safe driving behaviors of bus drivers (departure after stopping for 3 seconds, announcement for holding bus handles) and the percentage of one safe behavior of passengers getting on the busses those drivers drove (holding bus handles). A primary observer and two trained assistant observers measured two safe behaviors of the bus drivers with behavior checklists by riding on the busses and the passengers' safe behavior was observed by CCTV installed on each bus. An ABC multiple baseline design across participants was adopted. After baseline(A), education and prompts(B) and self-monitoring with goal setting(C) were introduced sequentially to each participant. The results showed that BBS program was effective to increase both bus drivers' and passengers' safe behaviors. Especially self-monitoring with goal setting was more effective in improving safe behaviors of bus drivers than education/prompts. These results suggest that education/prompts and self-monitoring with goal setting would be an alternative treatment technique to improve safety for lone workers such as bus drivers.

The Influence of Safety Leadership on Safety Behavior, Safety Climate and Accident: Meta Analysis (안전 리더십이 안전 행동, 안전 분위기, 사고에 미치는 효과: 메타 분석)

  • This study examined the influence of safety leadership on safety behavior, safety climate and accident using meta analysis. Specifically, safety leadership model which incorporated both transformational and active transactional leadership styles was tested using meta analysis. The results showed that both transformational and active transactional leadership had a positive relationship with safety compliance and participation behavior, and organizational safety climate. However, both leadership styles had a negative relationship with accident. In addition, transformational leadership had significant greater effects on safety behaviors and accident than transactional leadership. In contrast, although there were no significant differences, transactional leadership has a greater effect on the safety climate. These findings suggest that active transactional leadership is important in establishing perceived safety climate of employees, whereas transformational leadership is more related with improving employees' safety behaviors. Therefore, in line with the previous studies of safety leadership, a combination of both transformational and transactional styles will be most beneficial for developing organizational safety management program. Based on these results, practical implications and further research in terms of development for safety leadership program are discussed.

Effects of a Structure-centered Cooperative Learning Safety Education Program based on Blended Learning for Elementary School Students (초등학생의 블랜디드 러닝 기반 구조중심협동학습을 적용한 안전교육 프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to determine effects of a structure-centered cooperative learning safety education program based on blended learning for elementary school students. Methods: The study is developed in nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The subjects included 24 sixth grade students in the experimental group and 23 sixth grade students in the control group, respectively. To prevent diffusion of the experiment, it was carried out from May 20th to June 24th in 2015 with the control group and the other from August 26th to September 30th in 2015 with the experimental group. It was performed on experimental group after the structure-centered cooperative learning safety education program based on blended learning once a week for 6weeks. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and independent t-test. Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significant increases in the self-directed learning attitudes and safety behavior compared to the control group except for the academic self-efficacy. Conclusion: The results indicate that the structure-centered cooperative learning safety education program based on blended learning program is effective in safety education for 6th graders.

Mediating Effect of Ego-Resilience in the Relationship between Social Capital and Safety Awareness·Safety Pursuit Behavior of Adult Learner : Focusing on Changwon City (성인학습자의 사회적 자본과 안전의식·안전추구행동과의 관계에서 자아탄력성의 매개효과 : 창원지역 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediation of ego-resilience in the relationship between social capital and safety awareness safety pursuit behavior of adult learners in order to provide a basis for planning safety education to improve the safety behaviors. The participants were 162 adult learners who participated in the "Go to find safety classroom of citizens" in Changwon city. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed with the SPSS-WIN 20.0 program. As a results, first, the mean score for social capital was 3.36(social confidence 3.38, reciprocal norms 3.29, networks 3.22, democratic citizen awareness 3.56), ego-resilience 3.57. Second, social capital was significant correlation ego-resilience(r=.63, p<.001) and safety awareness safety pursuit behavior(r=.44, p<.001). Third, ego-resilience was significant correlation safety awareness safety pursuit behavior(r=.54, p<.001). Forth, ego-resilience had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between social capital and safety awareness safety pursuit behavior. Based on these findings of this study, safety education focusing on ego-resilience and social capital improvement are highly recommended to promote safety behavior in adult learners.

Development and effect of elementary school upper-grade safety health education program (초등학교 고학년 안전보건교육 프로그램 개발과 효과검증)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a safety health education program for the upper graders of elementary school children and to evaluate the program. Methods: The study was designed for learner centered safety education and heath education based on a theory of lifelong education. After a model development of the program was set up, five major units were selected after five stages of program planning, design, acting, evaluation and feedback: school safety, traffic safety, home safety, life safety, and first-aid. Twenty things were selected as what to teach, and a lesson plan of 12 sessions was mapped out by arranging what to teach. The subjects in this study were 114 elementary school students who were in five different sixth-grade classes. Each class received education for five days, in four sessions each, according to the program. Results: The learners showed improvement in safety consciousness, safety knowledge, self-efficacy and safety behavior after they received education according to the safety health education program, and they expressed a lot of satisfaction with the program. Conclusion: It is important to develop the lifelong education for safety health education for the elementary school children.

Consideration of human factors in industrial safety

  • As modern industrial technologies progress, critical incidents (both conventional and new) occur as well. Although majority of these safety incidents are human-related, or human factors problems, industrial systems and/or occupational safety operations are often designed without seriously considering important roles of human factors in industrial safety. The purpose of this paper is to show how a human factors approach can contribute to industrial safety. The paper introduces a systems safety concept with some useful analysis techniques for proactively preventing human-related safety problems. A behavior-based safety analysis approach to modify hyman behavior is suggested to reduce unsafe behavior and promote safe behavior. Finally, a sound human factors/ergonomics program is recommended for management to establish a hazard-free work environment. Some current and future research issues are discussed.

Factors Influencing Radiation Protection Behaviors of Endoscopy Nurses during Endoscopic Interventional Radiology (내시경하 중재적 방사선 시술 시 간호사의 방사선 방어행위 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing the Radiation Protection(RP) behaviors of endoscopy nurses during endoscopic interventional radiology. Methods: A total of 188 endoscopy nurses working at 30 tertiary or general hospitals participated in this questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire included items on general and job related characteristics, RP knowledge, RP attitude, RP behavior, self-efficacy, and safety climate. Data were collected through online surveys from March 22 to April 10, 2019. Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that RP attitude (β=.65, p<.001), safety climate (β=.12, p=.035), self-efficacy (β=.14, p=.009), and existence of RP protocols (β=.11, p=.038) were significant predictors of better RP behavior. Conclusion: The findings showed that the RP behavior of endoscopy nurses was at high levels and the continuing education for endoscopy nurses and development of a radiation safety management education program were important to improve RP behavior.
