  • This paper deals with stand-alone Photovoltaic system(SPVS) with charge and discharge controller. Main power source of SPVS are generally solar cell and battery. Therefore SPVS can be classified into variable types in accordance with connection method between battery and solar cell array. Mainly used one of them is direct connection type which has advantages such as simple structure and simple controller. However most big drawback of this system is energy loss by voltage disharmony between solar cell array and battery. Therefore SPVS with charge and discharge controller which can operate solar cell array at maximum power point is designed and experimented with a laboratory prototype.

  • MCMB (Mesocarbon microbeads) is a kind of anode material for lithium-ion secondary battery. MCMB charge/discharge cycle stability is one of the important criterion at lithium-ion battery operation. In this study, the cycling stability of a lithium-ion secondary battery has been examined. MCMB was made by the direct solvent extraction method. After the MCMB was carbonized and graphitized, the measurement of charge/discharge capacity and efficiency were carried out. In the result, discharge capacity of MCMB in the initial cycle was above 290.0 mAh/g. After the second cycle, efficiency of charge/discharge MCMB was about 98%. These results were similar to the commercial MCMB product.

  • Two-stage charge equalization scheme for HEV lithium-ion battery string is proposed with the optimal power rating design rule in this paper, where in the first stage the over charged energy of higher voltage cells is drawn out to the single common output capacitor and then, that discharged energy is recovered into the overall battery stack in the second stage. To achieve charge equalization of sort, the conventional flyback DC/DC converters of low power and minimized size are employed. The industrial sample employing both the proposed two-stage cell balancing scheme and the optimal power rating design rule shows good cell balancing performance with reduced size as well as low voltage stresses of the electronic devices.

  • The state of charge (SOC) is an important parameter in a battery-management system (BMS), and is very significant for accurately estimating the SOC of a battery. Li-ion batteries boast of excellent performance, and can only remain at their best working state by means of accurate SOC estimation that gives full play to their performances and raises their economic benefits. This paper summarizes some measures taken in SOC estimation, including the discharge experiment method, the ampere-hour integral method, the open circuit voltage method, the Kalman filter method, the neural network method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS. The principles of the various SOC estimation methods are introduced, and their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the working conditions adopted during these methods, are discussed and analyzed.

  • In this paper, an estimation algorithm for state of charge (SOC) was applied using an equivalent circuit model (ECM) and an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to improve the estimation accuracy of the battery system states. In particular, an observer was designed to estimate SOC along with the aged capacity. In the case of the fresh battery, when SOC was estimated by Kalman Filter (KF), the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was 0.27% which was smaller than MAPE of 1.43% when the SOC was calculated by the model without the observer. In the driving mode of the vehicle, the general KF or EKF algorithm cannot be used to estimate both SOC and capacity. Considering that the battery aging does not occur in a short period of time, a strategy of periodically estimating the battery capacity during charging was proposed. In the charging mode, since the current is fixed at some intervals, a strategy for estimating the capacity along with the SOC in this situation was suggested. When the current was fixed, MAPE of SOC estimation was 0.54%, and the MAPE of capacity estimation was 2.24%. Since the current is fixed when charging, it is feasible to estimate the battery capacity and SOC simultaneously using the general EKF. This method can be used to periodically perform battery capacity correction when charging the battery. When driving, the SOC can be estimated using EKF with the corrected capacity.

  • Based on the redox couples of a nitroxide radical, organic radical polymers were utilized as the electrode-active or charge-storage component for a secondary battery. We call a battery composed of the radical polymer electrode as "organic radical battery". Organic radical battery has several advantages: high capacity, high power-rate performance, long cycle ability, and environmentally-benign features. Synthesis and electrochemical studies of nitroxide polymers are described. Battery fabrication and cell performance are also reported.

  • To manage lead-acid battery efficiently and to use it longer in UPS, the state of charge(SOC) indicator of the battery is needed. So a new approach to developing battery SOC indicator for UPS is discussed in this paper. This method to determining SOC by combining the available data of discharge characteristics of a battery with neural networks(NN) is presented. The 3-layered NN with back propagation algorithm has been used. Exprement results show that the proposed method is appropriate as SOC indicator of the battery.

  • In this study, the simultaneous use of a multi-level converter (MLC) as a DC-motor drive and as an active battery cell balancer is investigated. MLCs allow each battery cell in a battery pack to be independently switched on and off, thereby enabling the potential non-uniform use of battery cells. By exploiting this property and the brake regeneration phases in the drive cycle, MLCs can balance both the state of charge (SoC) and temperature differences between cells, which are two known causes of battery wear, even without reciprocating the coolant flow inside the pack. The optimal control policy (OP) that considers both battery pack temperature and SoC dynamics is studied in detail based on the assumption that information on the state of each cell, the schedule of reciprocating air flow and the future driving profile are perfectly known. Results show that OP provides significant reductions in temperature and in SoC deviations compared with the uniform use of all cells even with uni-directional coolant flow. Thus, reciprocating coolant flow is a redundant function for a MLC-based cell balancer. A specific contribution of this paper is the derivation of a state-space electro-thermal model of a battery submodule for both uni-directional and reciprocating coolant flows under the switching action of MLC, resulting in OP being derived by the solution of a convex optimization problem.

  • In this work, Mathematical modeling was carried-out to predict the charging/discharging characteristics of VRLA (Valve regulated lead acid) battery, which is mainly used as a 12 V lead acid battery for automobile. And It also carried-out how it's characteristics would be changed due to aging. A mathematical modeling technique, which has been mainly used to predict behavior of Lithium-ion batteries, is applied to commercial 70 Ah VRLA battery. The modeling result of Voltage was compared with result of constant current charge / discharge test. From this, it can be seen that the NTGK model can be applied to the lead acid battery with high accuracy. It was also found that the aging of lead-acid battery can be predicted by using it.
