  • As we have become more interested in 'competency' that means ability to do something around the world, the competency of the best performers has also been introduced in the university curriculum as a concept of core competency. Research continues on why this competency-based education is needed compared to existing academic-oriented education, how it can be introduced into existing curricula, and how it can be developed and evaluated in detail. This study develops and validates core competency assessment tools that can diagnose core competencies of engineering students. Therefore, this research paper conducted a literature review related to core competencies and also core competency assessment tools of university students. It seeks to explore the implications of core competency assessment tools for engineering students and then lay the foundation for competency-based teaching and learning at engineering colleges. And also it defines the concepts of core competencies and each core competency of engineering students through prior research analysis of competence, core competence, and core competence of university students. The primary core competency assessment tool consisted of sub-factors and questions of core competencies. It were modified through the expert validation of the primary one and then it was used as a core competency assessment tools for preliminary investigation. • Junior college students in located Eup-Myeon areas commonly fail to meet the basic standards of mathematics. This leads students to lack basic knowledge and to have difficulties in studying their majors. In addition, students often lose their interest in the study and eventually leave school or drop out, while some have difficulties in their life at work. To remedy and solve these problems, the country proposes National Competency Standards(NCS). The basic occupational competencies proposed in NCS are essential occupational abilities required to successfully perform the job. I want to apply mathematical ability, which is one of the basic occupational competencies, to mathematics education of junior college. Applying NCS mathematical ability to junior college students, I would like to examine the effectiveness of the NCS mathematical ability course. The purpose of this study is to find out the way of education of desirable mathematical ability and to raise basic academic ability and interest in mathematics.

  • The study aims to gain information for developing educational contents to support LPSMB(low-performing students with multicultural backgrounds) through the survey on their personal characteristics, attitudes related to learning, and learning environment. We analyzed a survey of 2,091 students from 200 schools who were low-performing Korean students, LPSMBs, and normally performing students with multicultural backgrounds. Normally performing students with multicultural backgrounds showed statistically significant higher scores on most questionnaires than low-performing Korean students and LPSMBs. However, normally performing students with multicultural backgrounds and LPSMs showed statistically significant lower scores on identity and social relationships. LPSMBs showed lower scores on parents' culture than normally performing students with multicultural backgrounds. We suggested how to support LPSMBs' learning and learning environment based on the survey results.

  • National Competency Standards or NCS is an educational system that emphasizes developing job-related abilities. Therefore it will be an effective solution in training field-oriented work forces if properly applied. However, in the department of social welfare, it is not easy to apply NCS to the curriculum since most academic subjects concerning social welfare focus not on practice but on theory and in addition, most of social welfare departments in junior colleges have an accredited curriculum for the 2nd degree of the social worker qualification. This means it is preposterous if NCS is applied to the curriculum without prior changes in the existing qualification system. So, this paper proposes a draft model to apply NCS to the already-accredited curriculum for the 2nd degree social workers in the junior colleges and details are as follows. Firstly, the competency units will be customized for the existing academic subjects in the curriculum rather than developing new subjects in accordance with NCS competency units. Secondly, some client-related competency units including children, seniors, the disabled are newly developed and then applied to the curriculum, which are crucial for the career development at the junior college level. Thirdly, the competency units are categorized into three types in accordance with the degree of job relevancy - type 1, type 2, type 3. Fourthly, four out of 11 basic job abilities are selected and then developed into academic subjects. Fifthly, all competency units concerning the main job market are regarded as one virtual competency unit and then arranged in the order of type 1s, type 2s and type 3s and then the scope of their study is adjusted to the job abilities required at the main job market.
