  • Self-Compensating Dynamic Balancer (SCDB) is composed of a circular disk with a groove containing spherical balls and a low viscosity damping fluid. To investigate the stability of the motion equations these equations are perturbed and the resulting perturbation equations are analyzed further to determine whether the perturbations grow or decay with dimensionless time. Based on the results of stability investigation, ball positions that result in a balanced system are stable above the critical speed for .betha.' = 3.8. At critical speed the perturbed motion is said to be stable for .betha.' = 23. However, the system is unstable below critical speed in any case of .betha.'.

  • Dental ceramics have good aesthetics, biocompatibility, low thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, and color stability. However poor resistance to fracture and shrinkage during firing process have been limiting factors in their use, particularly in multiunit ceramic restorations. A new method for making all-ceramic crowns that have high strength and low processing shrinkage has been developed and is referred to as the Vita In-Ceram method. This study was performed to investigate the effect of $CeO_2$ addition in borosilicate glasses on the strength of alumina-glass composites. Porous alumina compacts were prepared by slip casting and sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Dense composites were made by infiltration of molten glass into partially sintered alumina at $1,140^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 diamond disk. and the final surface finishing on the tensile side was received an additional polishing sequence through $1{\mu}m$ diamond paste. Biaxial flexure test was conducted by using ball-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. To examine the microstructural aspect of crack propagation in the alumina-glass composites, Vickers-produced indentation crack was made on the tensile surface at a load of 98.0 N and dwell time of 15 sec, and the radial crack patterns were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The porosity rates of partially sintered alumina decreased with the rising of firing temperature. 2. The maximum biaxial flexure strength of 423.5MPa in alumina-glass composites was obtained with an addition of 3 mol% $CeO_2$ in glass composition and strength values showed the aspect of decrease with the increase of $CeO_2$ content. 3 The biaxial flexure strength values of alumina-glass composites were decreased with rising the firing temperature. 4. Observation of the fracture surfaces of alumina-glass composites indicated that the enhancement of strength in alumina-glass composites was due to the frictional or geometrical inter-locking of rough fracture surfaces and ligamentary bridging by intact islands of materials left behind the fracture front.

  • The silicon-containing Diamond-like Carbon (Si-DLC) film as an low friction coefficient coating has especially treated a different silicon content by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process at $500^{\circ}C$ on nitrided-STD 11 mold steel with (TMS) gas flow rate. The effects of variable silicon content on the Si-DLC films were tested with relative humidity of 5, 30 and 85% using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The wear-tested and original surface of Si-DLC films were analysed for an understanding of physical and chemical characterization, including a changing structure, via Raman spectra and nano hardness test. The results of Raman spectra have inferred a changing intra-structure from dangling bonds. And high silicon containing DLC films have shown increasing carbon peak ratio ($I_D/I_G$) values and G-peak values. In particular, the tribological tested surface of Si-DLC was shown the increasing hardness value in proportional to TMS gas flow rate. Therefore, at same time, the structure of the Si-DLC film was changed to a different intra-structure and increased hardness film with mechanical shear force and chemical reaction.

  • Zirconia and titanium alloys, which are mainly used for dental implant materials, have poor osseointegration and osteogenesis abilities due to their bioinertness with low bioactivity on surface. In order to improve their surface bioinertness, surface modification with a bioactive material is an easy and simple method. In this study, akermanite (Ca2MgSi2O7), a silicate-based bioceramic material with excellent bone bonding ability, was synthesized by a solid-state reaction and investigated its bioactivity from the analysis of surface dissolution and precipitation of hydroxyapatite particles in SBF solution. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), magnesium carbonate (MgCO3), and silicon dioxide (SiO2) were used as starting materials. After homogeneous mixing of starting materials by ball milling and the drying of at oven, uniaxial pressing was performed to form a compacted disk, and then heat-treated at high temperature to induce the solid-state reaction to akermanite. Bioactivity of synthesized akermanite disk was evaluated with the reaction temperature from the immersion test in SBF solution. The higher the reaction temperature, the more pronounced the akermanite phase and the less the surface dissolution at particle surface. It resulted that synthesized akermanite particles had high bioactivity on particle surface, but it depended on reacted temperature and phase composition. Moderate dissolution occurred at particle surfaces and observed the new precipitated hydroxyapatite particles in synthetic akermanite with solid-state reaction at 1100℃.

  • Niobium nitride (NbN) films were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steels by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted dc magnetron sputtering method at different ICP powers, and the effects of ICP power on the phase formation, mechanical and chemical properties of the films were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to analyze the crystal structure and micro-knoop hardness was used to measure the hardness of the films. Also, 3-D mechanical profiler and a ball-on-disk wear tester were used to measure the thickness of the films and to estimate wear characteristics, respectively. The thickness of the films decreased but their hardness increased with increasing ICP power, and it was confirmed that only cubic ${\delta}$-NbN(200) remained at high ICP power. At lower ICP powers, a mixture of the hexagonal ${\delta}^{\prime}$-NbN and cubic ${\delta}$-NbN phases was obtained in the films and the hardness decreased. The corrosion potential value increased gradually with increasing ICP power, but the changes of ICP power did not significantly influence the overall corrosion resistance.

  • Substitution of hip and knee joints by CoCr alloys is in great demand due to their high wear resistance and good biocompatibility. Understanding of tribocorrosion in joint replacements requires study of variables such as coefficient of friction and the choice of a proper corrosive medium in wear-corrosion tests carried out in the lab. The objective of this study was to characterize tribocorrosion behaviour of CoCr alloy with low (LCCoCr) and high carbon (HCCoCr) contents in several corrosive media: NaCl, Phosphate Buffer Solution (PBS), and PBS with hyaluronic acid (PBS-HA). Tribocorrosion tests were carried out on a pin-on-disk tribometer with an integrated electrochemical cell. A normal load of 5N was applied on the alumina ball counterpart at a rotation rate of 120 rpm. Coefficient of friction (COF) was measured and tribocorrosion behaviour was characterized by in situ application of electrochemical techniques. HCCoCr alloy immersed in PBS-HA showed the best tribocorrosion behaviour with the lowest COF. In this case, in situ measurement of corrosion potential and the impedance data under wear corrosion process showed an active state while passive film was continuously destroyed without possibility of regeneration.

  • In this study, the wear characteristics of five different dental composite resins cured by conventional halogen light and LED light sources were investigated. Five different dental composite resins of Surefil, Z100, Dyract AP, Fuji II LC and Compoglass were worn against a zirconia ceramic ball using a pin-on-disk type wear tester with 15N contact force in a reciprocal sliding motion of sliding distance of 10mm/cycle at 1Hz under the room temperature dry condition. The wear variations of dental composite resins were linearly increased as the number of cycles increased. It was observed that the wear resistances of these specimens were in the order of Dyract AP > Surefil > Compoglass > Z100 > Fuji II LC. On the morphological observations by SEM, the large crack formation on the sliding track of Fuji II LC specimen was the greatest among all resin composites. Dyract AP showed less wear with few surface damage. There is no significant difference in wear performance between conventional halogen light curing and light emitting diodes curing sources. It indicates that a light emitting diodes (LED) source can replace a halogen light source as curing unit for composite resin restorations.

  • Niobium nitride coatings have many potential thin film applications due to their chemical inertness, good mechanical properties, temperature stability and superconducting properties. In this study, $NbN_x$ coatings were prepared by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted DC magnetron sputtering method on the surface of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steels. Effects of target power were studied on mechanical and chemical properties of the coatings. The coating structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The coating hardness was measured by micro-knoop hardness tester. The coating thickness was measured using a 3D profiler and wear characteristics were estimated using a ball-on-disk wear tester. The thickness of the $NbN_x$ coatings increased linearly from 300 nm to 2000 nm as the Nb target power increased, and it showed over $HK_{0.005}$ 4000 hardness above Nb target power of 300 W. Hexagonal ${\delta}^{\prime}$-NbN phase and cubic ${\delta}$-NbN phase were observed in the coating films and the hardness of the NbNx coatings was higher when these two peaks were mixed. The corrosion resistance increased with the increase of the Nb target power.

  • The wear characteristics and wear mechanisms of plasma sprayed Al/sub 2/ O/sub 3/-40%TiO/sub 2/ and Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ deposited on casting aluminum alloy(AC4C) were investigated. Specimens were processed for various coating thicknesses. Ball on disk type wear tester was used for wear test. The scratch test on plasma sprayed coating surface showed that critical load to break the coating layer was greater than 40 N. The critical load increase with the increase of coating thickness of specimens. The friction coefficient of Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ coating layer was less than that of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-40%TiO/sub 2/ coating layer. The wear resistance of Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ coating layer was greater than that of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-40%TiO/sub 2/ coating layer. Microscopic observation of worn surfaces was made by SEM. SEM observation showed that the main mechanism of wear for Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-40%TiO/sub 2/ coating layer was abrasive wear under 50 N. For the case of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-40%TiO/sub 2/ coating layer, as the surface cracks perpendicular to sliding direction propagated, the wear debris was generated in wear track. However, the main mechanism of wear for Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ coating layer was brittle fracture under 150 N.
