  • An asynchronous optical packet-switching (AOPS) node with load-balancing capability can achieve better performance in reducing the high packet-loss ratio (PLR) and time delay caused by unbalanced traffic. This paper proposes a novel dynamic load-balancing algorithm for an AOPS node with limited buffer and without wavelength converters, and considering the data flow distribution and service levels. By calculating the occupancy state of the output ports, load state of the input ports, and priorities for data flow, the traffic is balanced accordingly. Simulations demonstrate that asynchronous variant data packets and output traffic can be automatically balanced according to service levels and the data flow distribution. A PLR of less than 0.01% can be achieved, as well as an average time delay of less than 0.46 ns.

  • MPLS enables efficient explicit routing, and thus provides great advantages in supporting traffic engineering. Exploiting this capability, we Propose a load balancing scheme which deploys a multipath routing. It is named LBM (Load Balancing in MPLS networks), and targets at efficient network utilization as well as performance enhancement. LBM establishes multiple LSP (Label Switched Path)s between a pair of ingress-egress routers, and distributes traffic over these LSPs at the new level. Its routing decision is based on both the length and the utilization of the paths. In order to enhance the efficiency of a link usage, a link is limited to be used by shorter paths as its utilization becomes higher Longer paths are considered to be candidate alternative paths as the utilization of shorter paths becomes higher. Simulation experiments are performed in order to compare the performance of LBM to that of static shortest path only scheme as well as the other representative dynamic multipath traffic distribution approaches. The simulation results show that LBM outperforms the compared approaches, and the performance gain is more significant when the traffic distribution among the ingress-egress pairs is non-uniform.

  • This paper presents the driving and bouncing control of a robotic vehicle for entertainment and transportation. The robotic vehicle is aimed to carry two passengers with a balancing mechanism by two wheels. To maximize the entertaining purpose, not only the balancing control performance but the bouncing control performance is implemented. Passengers can select different driving modes such as regular driving mode, balancing mode, and bouncing mode. Experimental studies of the balancing control performance as well as the bouncing control performance are conducted to see the feasibility as an entertainment robotic vehicle.

  • We consider a multi-objective balancing and sequencing problem in mixed model assembly lines, which is important for an efficient use of the assembly lines. In this paper, we present a neighborhood symbiotic evolutionary algorithm to simultaneously solve the two problems of balancing and model sequencing under multiple objectives. We aim to find a set of well-distributed solutions close to the true Pareto optimal solutions for decision makers. The proposed algorithm has a two-leveled structure. At Level 1, two populations are operated : One consists of individuals each of which represents a partial solution to the balancing problem and the other consists of individuals for the sequencing problem. Level 2, which is an upper level, works one population whose individuals represent the combined entire solutions to the two problems. The process of Level 1 imitates a neighborhood symbiotic evolution and that of Level 2 simulates an endosymbiotic evolution together with an elitist strategy to promote the capability of solution search. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with those of the existing algorithms in convergence, diversity and computation time of nondominated solutions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the compared algorithms in all the three performance measures.

  • Objectives: Intraoral appliances (IOA) are applied in the clinical practice of Korean medicine to improve the balance between yin and yang of the body such as temporomandibular joint balancing medicine. Historical examples of IOA were not well known. This study reports prototype IOA's described in medical classics. Methods: Several medical classics of 12th to 19th centuries were narratively reviewed for prototypical descriptions of IOA's in the context of clinical practice. Results: IOA's in the medical classics reviewed adopted such materials as bamboo, chopsticks, and coins that were adjusted in the height and were used as a temporary IOA's with response of the patient being monitored. IOA's were applied integratively with herbal medicine for diverse complaints such as pain, hearing problem, cough, asthma, and rhinorrhea. Conclusions: Prototype IOA's in the medical classics suggest an individualized, integrative, and holistic principle and usage of IOA's in the tradition of Korean medicine.

  • This work presents the numerical investigation of an unsteady cavitating flow around a balancing drum of a multistage pump. The main attention is focused on the cavitation phenomena, which occur in the rear part of the drum clearance, cause the erosion of the drum material and influence the pressure losses and the flow rate through the clearance. The one-way coupling of the URANS equations and the full Rayleigh-Plesset equation is employed to analyse the flow field as well as the dynamics of cavitating bubbles. The numerical simulations show that the erosion processes are highly influenced by shaft vibrations, namely by periodic deformations of the annular clearance in time. The calculated results are verified by erosion tests on a real pump.

  • Two-wheeled driying mobild robots are precise controlled in terms of linear contol methods without considering the nonlinear dynamical characteristics. However, in the high maneuvering situations such as fast turn and abrupt start and stop, such neglected terms become dominant and heavy influence the overall driving performance. This study describes the nonlinear optimal control method to take advantage of the exact nonlinear dynamics of the balancing robot. Simulation results indicate that the optimal control outperforms in the respect of transient performance and required wheel torques. A design example is suggested for the state matrix that provides design flexibility in the control. It is shown that a well-planned state matrix by reflecting the physics of a balancing robot greatly conrtibutes to the driving performance and stability.

  • Typically a wireless sensor network consists of a number of nodes that sense surrounding environment and collaboratively work to process and route the sensing data to a sink or gateway node. We propose an architecture with support of multiple routers in IPv6-based Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network (6LoWPAN). Our architecture provides traffic load balancing and increases network lifetime as well as self-healing mechanism so that in case of a router failure the network still can remain operational. Each router sends its own Router Advertisement message to nodes and all the nodes receiving the messages can select which router is the best router with the minimum hop-count and link information. We have implemented the architecture and assert our architecture helps in traffic load balancing and reducing data transmission delay for 6LoWPAN.

  • Advances in communication technologies and the decreasing cost of computers have made distributed computer systems an attractive alternative for satisfying the information needs of large organizations. This paper presents a distributed algorithm for performance improvement through load balancing and file migration in distributed systems. We employed a sender initiated strategy for task migration and used learning automata with several internal states for file migration. A task can be migrated according to the load information of a computer. A file is migrated to the destination processor when it is in the right boundary state. We also described an analytical model for load balancing with file migration to verify the proposed algorithm. Analytical and simulation results show that our algorithm is very well-suited for distributed system environments.

  • Much research has focused on the conflict and balance between work and family. Yet few studies examine how women feel in balancing these two roles. In that regard, this study examines how married working women feel balanced between work and family as well as the levels of support availability/demand that exists. The level of sense of balance regarding work-family is average. Sense of balance is related to age, income, work hours, size of workplace, numbers of family friendly policies, the family's attitude to woman's work, and the level of balancing strategies used. The demand for support is higher than the availability of support. Both factors are related to working hours and balancing strategies, etc.
