  • The calculation of earthwork plays a major role in plan or design of many civil engineering projects, and thus it has become very important to improve the accuracy of earthwork calculation. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for finding a cubic spline surface with the free boundary conditions, which interpolates the given three dimensional data, by using B-spline and an accurate method to estimate pit-excavation volume. The proposed method should be of interest to surveyors especially concerned with accuracy of volume computations. We present some computational results showing that our proposed method provides good accuracy.

  • In this paper, we investigate a localized approximation of a continuously differentiable function by neural networks. To do this, we first approximate a continuously differentiable function by B-spline functions and then approximate B-spline functions by neural networks. Our proofs are constructive and we give numerical results to support our theory.

  • A parametric cubic spline interpolating at fixed number of nodes is constructed by formulating a parametric cubic $g^2$ B-splines $S_3(t)$ with not equally spaced parametric knots. Since the fact that each component is in $C^2$ class is not enough to provide the geometric smoothness of parametric curves, the existence of $S_3(t)$ oriented toward the modified second-order geometric continuity is focalized in our work.

  • A quadratic B-spline finite element method for the spatial variable combined with a Newton method for the time variable is proposed to approximate a solution of Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers (BBMB) equation. Two examples were considered to show the efficiency of the proposed scheme. The numerical solutions obtained for various viscosity were compared with the exact solutions. The numerical results show that the scheme is efficient and feasible.

  • A finite element method (FEM) of B-spline wavelet on the interval (BSWI) is used in this paper to solve the static and vibration problems of thin plate. Instead of traditional polynomial interpolation, the scaling functions of two-dimensional tensor product BSWI are employed to construct the transverse displacements field. The method combines the accuracy of B-spline functions approximation and various basis functions for structural analysis. Some numerical examples are studied to demonstrate the proposed method and the numerical results presented are in good agreement with the solutions of other methods.
