  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive companding scheme to effectively reduce PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) of the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) signals, while considering both complexity and BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of systems. The proposed scheme adaptively alters the compression function in the transmitter and the expanding function in the receiver to simultaneously take into account the BER performance and the PAPR reduction. In this paper, we also measure in-band and out-of-band spectra of the proposed scheme, and observe the BER performance after applying the filtering to reduce the out-of-band radiation. As compared to the conventional companding algorithm, simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme achieves more reliable BER performance in all the cases of with and without the filtering, and has a good spectrum characteristic with effective PAPR reduction.

  • In this paper, we study a watermarking method based on the informed coding and embedding by means of trellis code and entropy masking. An image is divided as $8{\times}8$ block with no overlapping and the discrete cosine transform(DCT) is applied to each block. Then the 16 medium-frequency AC terms of each block are extracted. Next it is compared with gaussian random vectors having zero mean and unit variance. As these processing, the embedding vectors with minimum value of linear combination between linear correlation and Watson distance can be obtained by Viterbi algorithm at each stage of trellis coding. For considering the image characteristics, we apply different weight value between the linear correlation and the Watson distance using the entropy masking. To evaluate the performance of proposed method, the average bit error rate of watermark message is calculated from different several images. By the experiments the proposed method is improved in terms of the average bit error rate.

  • Storage devices such as memories are widely used in various electronic products. They require high-density memory and currently the data has been stored in multi-level format, that results in high error rate. In this paper, we apply error correction schemes that are widely used in communication system to the storage devices for satisfying low bit error rate and high code rate. In A WGN channel with average BER $10^{-5}$ and $5{\times}10^{-6}$, we study error correction schemes for 4-1evel cell to achieve target code rate 0.99 and target BER $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-13}$, respectively. Since block codes may perform better than the concatenated codes for high code rate, and it is important to use less degraded inner code even when many bits are punctured. The performance of concatenated codes using general feedforward systematic convolutional codes are worse than the block code only scheme. The simulation results show that RSC codes must be used as inner codes to achieve good performance of punctured convolutional codes for high code rate.

  • The performance of dual diversity receivers operating over correlated Ricean fading channels is analyzed. Using a previously derived rapidly converging infinite series representation for the bivariate Ricean probability density function, analytical expressions for the statistics of dual-branch selection combining, maximal-ratio combining, and equal-gain combining output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are derived. These expressions are employed to obtain novel analytical formulae for the average output SNR, amount of fading, average bit error probability, and outage probability. The proposed mathematical analysis is used to study various novel performance evaluation results with parameters of interest the fading severity, average input SNRs, and the correlation coefficient. The series convergence rate is also examined verifying the fast convergence of the analytical expressions. The accuracy of most of the theoretical performance evaluation results are validated by means of computer simulations.

  • High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of transmitted signals is a major drawback in Multicarrier modulation (MCM) systems. Companding transform is a well-known method to reduce the PAPR without restrictions on system parameters such as the number of subcarriers, frame format and constellation type. In this paper, a novel adaptive companding scheme, mainly focuses on compressing the large signals into the desirable distribution, is proposed to reduce the PAPR with low implementation complexity. In addition, formulas to calculate its PAPR and bit error rate (BER) performance are also derived. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme can achieve an effective tradeoff between PAPR reduction and BER performance by carefully choosing the companding parameter.

  • To trnsmit moving image signals by using an object vased coding technique at the rate of 8kbps~11kbps, it is very important to minimize the bit rates used for the compression of the color information of MF-objects. This paper proposes a hybrid coding method which uses the shpae adaptive coding method and the interframe reference method selectively. Gilge's shape adaptive orthogonal coidng method is utilized for shpae adaptive coding. The interfarame reference method approximates the low-passed signals of the image by gilge's shpae adaptive orthogonalization method and then refers the approximation error signals from the high frequency signal components of th eprevious frame. The proposed method achives the bit rates reduction of 17% compared to the gilge's shape adaptive orthogonalization method and 30% rduction compared to the shape adaptive DCT in average.

  • OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system is robust to frequency selective fading and narrowband interference in high-speed data communications. However, an OFDM signal consists of a number of independently modulated subcarriers, which can give a large PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) when added up coherently. In this paper, we apply clipping and filtering to solve the PAPR problem and compensate the inband compensation using calculated EVM (Error Vector Magnitude). The proposed method can reduce the PAPR and inband distortion. From the results, we analyze the PAPR reducing efficiency and EVM, BER performance of proposed algorithm in the wireless communication system.

  • High peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) is one of serious problems in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems. This paper proposes a PAPR reduction technique for limited feedback multiple input multiple output(MIMO) OFDM systems. The proposed method is based on the null space of the MIMO channel where a dummy signal is made in the channel's null space and then, subtracted from the original signal to reduce the PAPR. First, we show that a problem occurs when the existing method is directly applied to limited feedback MIMO case. Then, a weight function for the dummy signal is proposed to mitigate the degradation of the receiver performance while still reducing PAPR significantly. The weight function is derived from a constrained nonlinear optimization problem to minimize the mean square error between the received signal and its ideal signal. Simulation results shows that the proposed technique provides about 2.5dB PAPR reduction with 0.2dB bit-error probability loss.

  • In this paper, we consider the superposed 16-QAM CDMA system for subband coded (SBC) image transmissions. We divide the SBC image bit into two group according to its significance. First, we investigate the average bit error rate (BER) of the overall system when the significance of bits is ignored. Next, we investigate the optimal signal constellation and processing gain that maximizes the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of SBC image, subject to a fixed power and bandwidth constraint. We examine the performance improvement over the conventional equal distane, equal processing gain system, and the equal error protection (EEP) system.

  • This paper presents an analysis of asynchronous multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) uplink systems over frequency-selective multipath fading channels when the frequency offsets (FOs) of all users are random variables and the frequency offset for the desired user is compensated. The effect of a residual frequency offset(RFO) on the average bit error rate (BER) is evaluated by the semi-analytical method, then the approximated BER performance is obtained as a closed-form expression. Moreover, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) loss caused by RFO is evaluated. Derived results show that the performance degradation due to RFO is negligible if the estimation error of RFO for the desired user is less than the normalized value of 0.1.
