  • To restore visual sensation of blind patients, we have proposed a fully implantable retinal prosthesis comprising an three dimensionally (3D) stacked retinal chip for transforming optical signal to electrical signal, a flexible cable with stimulus electrode array for stimulating retina cells, and coupling coils for power transmission. The 3D stacked retinal chip is consisted of several LSI chips such as photodetector, signal processing circuit, and stimulus current generator. They are vertically stacked and electrically connected using 3D integration technology. Our retinal prosthesis has a small size and lightweight with high resolution, therefore it could increase the patients` quality of life (QOL). For realizing the fully implantable retinal prosthesis, we developed a retinal prosthesis module comprising a retinal prosthesis chip and a flexible cable with stimulus electrode array for generating optimal stimulus current. In this study, we used a 2D retinal chip as a prototype retinal prosthesis chip. We fabricated the polymide-based flexible cable of $20{\mu}m$ thickness where 16 channels Pt stimulus electrode array was formed in the cable. Pt electrode has an impedance of $9.9k{\Omega}$ at 400Hz frequency. The retinal prosthesis chip was mounted on the flexible cable by an epoxy and electrically connected by Au wire. The retinal prosthesis chip was cappted by a silicone to pretect from corrosive environments in an eyeball. Then, the fabricated retinal prosthesis module was implanted into an eyeball of a rabbit. We successfully recorded electrically evoked potential (EEP) elicited from the rabbit brain by the current stimulation supplied from the implanted retinal prosthesis module. EEP amplitude was increased linearly with illumination intensity and irradiation time of incident light. The retinal prosthesis chip was well functioned after implanting into the eyeball of the rabbit.

  • Device miniaturization and high integrated circuit design is of major interest for the development of electronic devices. Various studies have been conducted to develop new material and processing technique[1]. Negative Differential Resistance(NDR) is the defining behavior in several electronic components, including the Esaki diode and most notably, resonant tunneling diodes(RTD)[2]. We made a comparison of electrical properties between 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene and 4-[2,5-dimethoxy-4-(p henylethynyl)phenyl]ethynylphenylethanethioate, which have been well known as a conducting molecule having possible application to molecular level NDR devices. As a result, we measured current-voltage curves using Scanning Tunneling microscopy(STM), I-V curves also showed several current peaks between negative and positive bias region.

  • Although many structures based on $SnO_2$ nanowires have been demonstrated, there is a limitation towards practical application due to the unwanted contact potential between the metal electrode and the $SnO_2$ nanowire. This is mostly due to the presence of the native oxide layer that acts as an insulator between the metal contact and the nanowire. In this study the contact properties between Ti/Au contacts and a single $SnO_2$ nanowire was compared to the electrical properties of a contact without the oxide layer. RIE(Reactive Ion Etching) is used to selectively remove the oxide layer from the contact area. The $SnO_2$ nanowires were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and dispersed on a $Si/Si_3N_4$ substrate. The Ti/Au (20nm/100nm) electrodes were formed bye-beam lithography, e-beam evaporation and a lift-off process.

  • For interlayer tunneling spectroscopy using a small stack of $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ (Bi-2212) intrinsic junctions in a high-bias range, large self-heating takes place due to the poor thermal conductivity of Bi-2212. In this study, we numerically estimate the self-heating around a Bi-2212 sample stack for I-V or dI/dV-V measurements. Our results show that the temperature discrepancy between the Bi-2212 sample stack and top Au electrodes due to bias-induced self-heating is small enough along the c-axis direction of Bi-2212. On the other hand, the lateral temperature discrepancy between the sample stack and the Bi-2212 on-chip thermometer stack can be as large as ${\sim}20\;K$ for the highest bias required to observe the pseudogap hump structure. We thus suggest a new in-situ ac thermometry, employing the Au current-bias electrode itself deposited on top of the sample stack as the resistive thermometer layer, which is supposed to allow safe temperature measurements for the interlayer tunneling spectroscopy.

  • As to the reflection electrode of LCD (liquid crystal displays), silver-copper-gold alloy (hereafter, it is called as ACA (Ag98%, Cu1%, Au1%)) is an effective material of which weathering resistance can be improved more compared with pure silver. However, there is a problem that gold remains on the substrate as residues when ACA is etched in cerium ammonium nitrate solution or phosphoric acid. Gold can not be etched in these etchants as readily as the other two alloying elements. Gold residue has actually been removed physically by brushing etc. This procedure causes damage to the display elements. Another etchant of iodine/potassium iodide generally known as one of the gold etchants can not give precise etch pattern because of remarkable difference in etching rates among silver, copper and gold. The purpose of this research is to obtain a practical etchant for ACA alloy. The results are as follows. The cyanogen complex salt of gold generates when cyanide is used as the etchant, in which gold dissolves considerably. Oxygen reduction is important as the cathodic reaction in the dissolution of gold. A new etchant of sodium cyanide / potassium ferricyanide whose cathodic reduction is stronger than oxygen, can give precise etch patterns in ACA alloy swiftly at room temperature.

  • Characteristics of thin-film NTC thermal sensors fabricated by micromachining technology were studied as a function of the thickness of membrane. The overall-structure of thermal sensor has a form of Au/Ti/NTC/$SiO_{X}$/(100)Si. NTC film of $Mn_{1.5}CoNi_{0.5}O_{4}$ with 0.5 mm in thickness was deposited on $SiO_{X}$ layer (1.2 mm) by PLD (pulsed laser deposition) and annealed at 873-1073 K in air for 1 hour. Au(200 nm)/Ti(100 nm) electrode was coated on NTC film by dc sputtering. By the results of microstructure, X-ray and NTC analysis, post-annealed NTC films at 973 K for 1 hour showed the best characteristics as NTC thermal sensing film. In order to reduce the thermal mass and thermal time constant of sensor, the sensing element was built-up on a thin membrane with the thickness of 20-65 mm. Sensors with thin sensing membrane showed the good detecting characteristics.

  • We have investigated the sensing properties of ethanol gas sensor with pure ZnO and Ga-doped ZnO nanowires on Au coated (0001) sapphire substrates grown by hot walled pulsed laser deposition. Randomly aligned ZnO nanowires arrays were grown on a Au-electrode patterned under ambient conditions. ZnO nanowires have various sizes and shapes with a different substrate position inside a furnace. The average of length and diameter of the ZnO nanowires were $8\;{\mu}m$ and 100 nm respectively, and confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Sensitivity chanege characterization of the gas sensor was found that measured sensitivities of the ethanol gas sensors were 83.3% and 68.3% at $300^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • Liposomes and proteoliposomes, artificial membranes, can interact with many solutes, such as drugs, peptides and proteins. The immobilization of (prot대)liposomes as supramolecular aggregates on gold surfaces have potential applications in nano and biosensor technology. We demonstrated a quartz crystal analyzer (QCA) based method to monitor the construction of multi-layers of unilamellar liposomes based on avidin-biotin binding on gold surfaces using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Thus, the QCA provides an on line and efficient method of detecting the construction of protein membranes, which has applications in biosensing systems.

  • An asymmetric metal-semiconductor-metal Al0.24Ga0.76N ultraviolet (UV) sensor was fabricated, and the effects of local Joule heating were investigated. After dielectric breakdown, the current density under a reverse bias of 2.0 V was 1.1×10-9 A/cm2, significantly lower than 1.2×10-8 A/cm2 before dielectric breakdown; moreover, the Schottky behavior of the Ti/Al/Ni/Au electrode changed to ohmic behavior under forward bias. The UV-to-visible rejection ratio (UVRR) under a reverse bias of 7.0 V before dielectric breakdown was 87; however, this UVRR significantly increased to 578, in addition to providing highly reliable responsivity. Transmission electron microscopy revealed interdiffusion between adjacent layers, with nitrogen vacancies possibly formed owing to local Joule heating at the AlGaN/Ti/Al/Ni/Au interfaces. X-ray photoelectron microscopy results revealed decreases in the peak intensities of the O 1s binding energies associated with the Ga-O bond and OH-, which act as electron-trapping states on the AlGaN surface. The reduction in dark current owing to the proposed local heating method is expected to increase the sensing performance of UV optoelectronic integrated devices, such as active-pixel UV image sensors.

  • Redox complexes to transport electrons from enzyme to electrodes are very important part in glucose sensor. Pentacyanoferrate-bound aniline ($Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine), was prepared as a potential redox mediator in a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH)-glucose sensor. The synthesized pyridyl-$NH_2$ to pentacyanoferrate was characterized by the electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. A amperometric enzyme-linked electrode was developed based on GDH, which catalyses the oxidation of glucose. Glucose was detected using GDH that was co-immobilized with an $Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine and gold nano-particles (AuNPs) on ITO electrodes. The $Fe(CN)_5$-aminopyridine and AuNPs immobilized onto ITO electrodes provided about a two times higher electrochemical response compared to that of a bare ITO electrode. As glucose was catalyzed by wired GDH, the electrical signal was monitored at 0.4 V versus Ag/AgCl by cyclic voltammetry. The anode currents was linearly increased in proportion to the glucose concentration over the 0~10 mM range.
