  • This paper presents the normalized site attenuation characteristics for frequencies below 80 ㎒ using forced resonant type EMI dipole antennas. The coupled integral equations for unknown current distribution are solved by the Galerkin's method of moments with piecewise sinusoidal functions. The results show that the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna for frequencies below 80 ㎒ can be used effectively for the measuring normalized site attenuation. The calculated normalized site attenuation curves for the forced resonant type EMI dipole antenna are useful in determining the suitability of open area test sites.

  • Spray cross-section was measured by the Optical Line Patternator (OLP) and Optical Tomography at high ambient pressure. The laser line beam passed through the spray region, then Mie scattered signal and transmitted light were captured. The measured signal was processed to obtain a distribution of attenuation coefficient in spray cross-section. Beer-Lambert's law and mathematical reconstruction methods were used to reconstruct the distribution of attenuation coefficient. Spray became dense at high pressure and attenuation of scattered signal occurred seriously. OLP method, which uses Mie scattered signal, showed limit in compensating attenuation problem in dense spray region. Optical tomography reconstructed spray cross-section well, from transmission rate of light penetrating spray region.

  • The edges with "bridge characteristic" play the role of connecting the communication between regions in power optical cable network. To solve the problem of mining edges with "bridge characteristic" in provincial power optical cable network, the complex power optical cable network model is constructed. Firstly, to measure the generated potential energy of all nodes in n-level neighborhood local structure for one edge, the n-level neighborhood local structure topological potential is designed. And the minimum connected chain attenuation is designed to measure the attenuation degree caused by substituted edges. On the basis of that, the minimum connected chain attenuation topological potential based measurement is designed. By using the designed measurement, a bridge-edges mining algorithm is proposed to mine edges with "bridge characteristic". The experiments are conducted on the physical topology of the power optical cable network in Jilin Province. Compared with that of other three typical methods, the network efficiency and connectivity of the proposed method are decreased by 3.58% and 28.79% on average respectively. And the proposed method can not only mine optical cable connection with typical "bridge characteristic" but also can mine optical cables without obvious characteristics of city or voltage, but it have "bridge characteristic" in the topology structure.

  • The neutron imaging technique was used to investigate the water discharge characteristics at PEMFC. Prior to investigation of water discharge characteristics, the linear attenuation coefficient for water at Neutron Radiography Facility (NRF) was calibrated. The feasibility test apparatus was consisted of pressurized air and water in order to simulate the actual operating PEMFC. The feasibility tests have been performed at 1-parallel serpentine type with 100 $cm^2$ active area and different air flow rate (1, 2, and 4 lpm). The total water volume variations at each condition were calculated from the neutron images. The water at channel is well discharged as soon as supplying the pressurized air into the PEMFC. However, because the water at MEA isn't removed the total water volume is constant after 150. Therefore more effective method is needed in order to discharge water at MEA, and the neutron imaging technique is helpful for it.

  • A nondestructive ultrasonic technique was applied to evaluate the thermal characteristics and degradation of synthetic polymer resin (plastics) with better cost-effectiveness and functionality than glass and metal. Thermoplastic and transparent acrylic resin (PMMA) specimens were annealed at below the glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and the propagation characteristics (attenuation and velocity) were measured. The attenuation increased and the velocity decreased with thermal degradation. The results showed that the thermal aging of the specimens could be evaluated quantitatively and that the Tg could be evaluated qualitatively.

  • An MR-based attenuation correction (MRAC) map plays an important role in quantitative positron emission tomography (PET) image evaluation in PET/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. However, the MRAC map is affected by the magnetic field inhomogeneity of MRIs. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of MRAC maps of physical phantoms on PET/MRI images. Phantom measurements were performed using the Siemens Biograph mMR. The modular type physical phantoms that provide assembly versatility for phantom construction were scanned in a four-channel Body Matrix coil. The MRAC map was generated using the two-point Dixon-based segmentation method for whole-body imaging. The modular phantoms were scanned in compact and non-compact assembly configurations. In addition, the phantoms were scanned repeatedly to generate MRAC maps. The acquired MRAC maps show differently assigned values for void areas. An incorrect assignment of a void area was shown on a locally compact space between phantoms. The assigned MRAC values were distorted using a wide field-of-view (FOV). The MRAC values also differed after repeated scans. However, the erroneous MRAC values appeared outside of phantom, except for a large FOV. The MRAC map of the phantom was affected by phantom configuration and the number of scans. A quantitative study using a phantom in a PET/MRI system should be performed after evaluation of the MRAC map characteristics.

  • In this paper, the EPICS2017 photoatomic database was used to evaluate the photon mass attenuation coefficients and buildup factors of soils collected at different depths in the Philippine islands. The extraction and interpolation of the library was accomplished at the recommended linear-linear scales to obtain the incoherent and total cross section and mass attenuation coefficient. The buildup factors were evaluated using the G-P fitting method in ANSI/ANS-6.4.3. An agreement was achieved between XCOM, MCNP5, and EPICS2017 for the calculated mass attenuation coefficient values. The buildup factors were reported at several penetration depths within the standard energy grid. The highest values of both buildup factor classifications were found in the energy range between 100 and 400 keV where incoherent scattering interaction probabilities are predominant, and least at the region of predominant photoionization events. The buildup factors were examined as a function of different soil silica contents. The soil samples with larger silica concentrations were found to have higher buildup factor values and hence lower shielding characteristics, while conversely, those with the least silica contents have increased shielding characteristics brought by the increased proportions of the abundant heavier oxides.

  • Strong motion attenuation relationship represents a comprehensive trend of ground shakings at sites with distances from the source, geology, local soil conditions, and others. It is necessary to develop an attenuation relationship with careful considerations of characteristics of the target area for reliable seismic hazard/risk assessments. In the study, observed ground motions from the January 2007 magnitude 4.9 Odaesan earthquake and the events occurring in the Gyeongsang provinces are compared with the previously proposed ground attenuation relationships in the Korean Peninsula to select most appropriate one. In the meantime, a few strong ground motion attenuation relationships are proposed and introduced in HAZUS, which have been designed for the Western United States and the Central and Eastern United States. The selected relationship from the ones for the Korean Peninsula has been compared with attenuation relationships available in HAZUS. Results of the study will increase the reliability of seismic hazard/risk assessments using HAZUS in the Korean Peninsula.

  • In this paper, to develop a broadband power line communication modem and network technologies, we analysis the characteristics of underground power line communication channel through actual tests. To measure the amount of attenuation by length and structure of broadband power line communication channel, we configure a measurement system of the channel with signal generator, spectrum analyzer and non-contacted coupler. For actual tests, we choose two of the longest lines among medium-voltage lines as a single line in the test lines and measure the characteristics of noise and signal attenuation level of the channel. The experimental results show that the channel has a impulse noise which can remarkably reduce communication capability. In the case of long lines, high-frequency attenuation appeared by length of the lines.

  • Recently, not only Korea but also the world has been suffering from problems related to coastal erosion. The hard defense method has been primarily used as a countermeasure against erosion. However, this method is expensive and has environmental implications. Hence, interest in other alternative methods, such as the eco-friendly vegetation method, is increasing. In this study, we aim to analyze the hydraulic characteristic of submerged rigid vegetation according to the cross-sectional change through a hydraulic experiment and numerical simulation. From the hydraulic experiment, the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient, and energy dissipation coefficient were analyzed according to the density, width, and multi-row arrangement of the vegetation zone. From numerical simulations, the flow field, vorticity distribution, turbulence distribution, and wave distribution around the vegetation zone were analyzed according to the crest depth, width, density, and multi-row arrangement distance of the vegetation zone. The hydraulic experiment results suggest that the transmission coefficient decreased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased, and the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the hydraulic characteristics significantly. Moreover, the numerical simulations showed that as the crest depth decreased, the width and density of vegetation increased along with vorticity and turbulence intensity, resulting in increased wave height attenuation performance. Additionally, there was no significant difference in vorticity, turbulence intensity, and wave height attenuation performance based on the multi-row arrangement distance. Overall, in the case of submerged rigid vegetation, the wave energy attenuation performance increased as the density and width of the vegetation zone increased and crest depth decreased. However, the multi-row arrangement condition did not affect the wave energy attenuation performance significantly.
