  • Ripple formation of femtosecond laser in stainless steel is investigated using 184 fs pulses with a center wavelength of 785 nm. The effect of the laser polarization relative to the translation direction is observed. For drilling with a certain aspect ratio, reflections at the hole walls take place, leading to a non-uniform intensity distribution deep inside the formed hole. Finally, it is shown that a circular polarization during the drilling process significantly improves the quality of the produced holes.

  • Recently the energy dependence of LNG resource is being increased. So the enlargement of LNG storage is constructed in the coastal area. Most of LNG tanks are constructed below the ground level, and thus the hydraulic uplift pressure could be a problem against the weight of tank structure. Specifically, the settlement of foundation soil in the LNG tank is also important in the aspect of safety. The low temperature around LNG tank is induced the ground freezing and hence increasing the soil volume and earth pressure. The additional lateral earth pressure due to ground freezing could be applied to the LNG tank. In this study, the stability of LNG storage tank was evaluated with consideration of freezing earth pressure by using computer program TEMP-W.

  • Unsteady heat conduction in stacked disks in a furnace has been numerically solved The effects of relevant parameters such as disk spacing, aspect ratio, environmental temperature, Biot nember, etc. have been investigated. The highest temperature appears at the disk edge and the lowest at the center. Penetration of heat form the surface to the center requires some time. Heating should be slow for uniform temperature rise. Geometric parameters complicates the radiative and conductive heat transfer. Though the resulting dependence of temperature nonuniformity on various parameters is complicated, high uniformity of temperature is in general available by low Biot number and/or low environmental temperature.

  • This present article represents the study of the forced vibration of nanobeam of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) surrounded by a polymer matrix. The modeling was done according to the Euler-Bernoulli beam model and with the application of the non-local continuum or elasticity theory. Particulars cases of the local elasticity theory have also been studied for comparison. This model takes into account the different effects of the interaction of the Winkler's type elastic medium with the nanobeam of carbon nanotubes. Then, a study of the influence of the amplitude distribution and the frequency was made by variation of some parameters such as (scale effect ($e_0{^a}$), the dimensional ratio or aspect ratio (L/d), also, bound to the mode number (N) and the effect of the stiffness of elastic medium ($K_w$). The results obtained indicate the dependence of the variation of the amplitude and the frequency with the different parameters of the model, besides they prove the local effect of the stresses.

  • The indirect branch instruction is a most substantial obstacle in utilizing ILP of modem high performance processors. The target address of an indirect branch has the polymorphic characteristic varied dynamically, so it is very difficult to predict the accurate target address. Therefore the performance of a processor with speculative methodology is reduced significantly due to the many execution cycle delays in occurring the misprediction. We proposed the very accurate and novel indirect branch prediction scheme so called data-dependence based prediction. The predictor results in the prediction accuracy of 98.92% using 1K entries, and. 99.95% using 8K But, all of the proposed indirect predictor including our predictor has a large hardware overhead for restoring expected target addresses as well as tags for alleviating an aliasing. Hence, we propose the scheme minimizing the hardware overhead without sacrificing the prediction accuracy. Our experiment results show that the hardware is reduced about 60% without the performance loss, and about 80% sacrificing only the performance loss of 0.1% in aspect of the tag overhead. Also, in aspect of the overhead of storing target addresses, it can save the hardware about 35% without the performance loss, and about 45% sacrificing only the performance loss of 1.11%.

  • This study investigated the overall dependence of the tensile properties of Al-Si alloys on the distribution aspect of a eutectic Si particle in terms of defect susceptibility to the effective void area fraction, referring to the sum of pre-existing microvoids and the damage evolution of the Si particle. The network morphology of as-cast Al-xSi (x=2,5,8,11) alloys was modified to a granular type via a T4 treatment, after which a computational topography (CT) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were utilized to evaluate the size and distribution of the microvoids. The CT and SEM analyses indicated that the main cracks grow along local regions that possess the highest porosity level. The local plastic deformation around the microvoids and the distribution aspect of the microvoids induced a practical difference between the iso-volumetric CT measurement and the SEM fractography outcomes. The results demonstrated that the overall dependence of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation on the effective void area fraction is more sensitive to the variation of the area fraction of the Si particle in the network morphology than in the granular type; this is due to the sequential damage evolution of the neighboring Si particles in the eutectic Si colony.

  • In this study, the propagation behaviour and the closure phenomena of physically small surface cracks were investigated by the techinque of the Kikukawa-unloading elastic compliance method using a back face strain gage. The surface cracks initiated and propagated from notched specimens under constant amplitude bending load. The crack shape (aspect ratio) with approximately semi-circular at the early stage was changed to semi-elliptical as the cracks grew larger. The crack depth (a) could be expressed uniquenly by the crack length (c). The dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was strongly related in the lower ${\Delta}K$ range. The deceleration of the surface crack propagation rate was prominent in lower R during the crack length was small. When the propagation rate was rearranged with the effective stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}$K_{eff} the dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was found to be diminshed. These were caused by the crack closure phenomena that was most prominent at the lower propagation rate. The mechanism of crack closure phenomena was dominated by the plasticity-induced mechanism.

  • Magnetic hysteresis in Ni nanowire arrays grown by electrodeposition inside the pores of anodic alumina templates is studied as a function of temperature in the range between 5 K and 300 K. Nanowires with different diameters, aspect ratios, inter-wire distance in the array and surface condition (smooth and rough) are synthesized. These microstructure parameters are linked to the different free magnetic energy contributions determining coercivity and the controlling magnetization reversal mechanisms. Coercivity increases with temperature in arrays of nanowires with rough surfaces and small diameters -33 nm and 65 nm- when measured without removing the alumina template and/or the Al substrate. For thicker wires -200 nm in diameter and relatively smooth surfaces- measured without the Al substrate, coercivity decreases as temperature rises. These temperature dependences of magnetic hysteresis are described in terms of an effective magnetic anisotropy $K_a$, resulting from the interplay of magnetocrystalline, magnetoelastic and shape anisotropies, together with the magnetostatic interaction energy density between nanowires in the array. The experimentally determined coercive fields are compared with results of micromagnetic calculations, performed considering the magnetization reversal mode acting in each studied array and microstructure parameters. A method is proposed to roughly estimate the value of $K_a$ experimentally, from the hysteresis loops measured at different temperatures. These measured values are in agreement with theoretical calculations. The observed temperature dependence of coercivity does not arise from an intrinsic property of pure Ni but from the nanowires surface roughness and the way the array is measured, with or without the alumina template and/or the aluminum support.

  • In this paper, we report 3D-simulations of a plasma etching process by employing cell-removal algorithm takes into account the mask shadow effect os well as spillover errors. The developed simulator haas an input interface to take not only an analytic form but a Monte Carlo distribution of the ions. The graphic user interface(GUI) was also built into the simulator for UNIX environment. To demonstrate the capability of 3D-SURFILER(SURface proFILER), we have simulated for a typical contact hole structure with 36,000($30{\times}40{\times}30$) cells, which takes about 20 minutes with 10 Mbytes memory on sun ultra sparc 1. as an exemplary case, we calculated the etch profile during the reactive ion etching(RIE) of a contact hole wherein the aspect ratio is 1.57. Furthermore, we also simulated the dependence of a damage parameter and the evolution of topography as a function of the chamber pressure and the incident ion flux.
