Effect of Mulberry Fruit Tea on the Serum Lipid Profiles and Cardiovascular Disease Markers of Middle-Aged People Living in Choongnam (오디 분말차 급여가 일부 충남지역에 거주하는 중년 남.녀의 혈청 지질 및 심혈관계 인자에 미친 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of mulberry fruit tea (MFT) on the levels of serum lipid profiles and serum cardiovascular disease markers in sixty middle-aged people(30 males and 30 females) who consumed MFT for 4 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, serum lipid profile levels, and serum cardiovascular disease markers were analyzed before and after consumption of MFT. After consumption of MFT, no significant differences were observed in anthropometric measurements, levels of serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in males and females. Among serum lipid profiles, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were decreased significantly, whereas HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased.

Effect of Solanum lyratum Extract on Dimethylniatrosamine-Induced Liver Damage in Rats (Dimethylnitrosamine에 의해 유도된 흰쥐 간독성에 대한 배풍등 추출물의 보호효과)

  • Solanum lyratum(Solanaceae) has been used as a traditional analgesic, antipyretic and hepatoprotective agents in Korea. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of ethylacetate extract of Solanum lyratum (SL) on the dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Oral administration of SL (150, 300 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase levels. SL also increased serum protein level and reduced the hepatic level of malondialdehyde in DMN-treated rats. Furthermore, DMN-induced elevation of hydroxyproline content was reduced by the treatment of SL. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that SL exhibited in vivo hepatoprotective effect against DMN-induced liver injury, and suggest that SL may be useful in the prevention of liver damage.

A Case Study of Poisoning Symptoms Caused by Misusing Xanthii Fructus, Treated with Korean Medicine (도꼬마리 열매 복용으로 발생한 중독증상(中毒症狀)의 한방치료 1례)

  • This is a clinical report of one patient with mental disorientation, abnormal behavior, spasm, and other symptoms caused by poisoning with Xanthii Fructus, who recovered completely with treatment. The patient was treated with Korean medical treatments, such as herbal medicine and acupuncture. After treatment, various symptoms caused by the Xanthii Fructus poisoning disappeared completely and laboratory findings, such as liver function tests (aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase), were also close to the normal ranges. This case shows that Korean medicine therapy can be applicable in treating various symptoms caused by Xanthii Fructus poisoning. It is considered that further research is needed to confirm the safe use of Xanthii Fructus.

  • The hypoglycemic effect of Collybia confluens exobiopolymer was investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In a dose-dependent study, the exobiopolymer, at 150 mg/kg body weight (BW) dose substantially lowered the plasma glucose level by 29.3%, as compared to the control group. It also lowered the plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by 23.3 and 30.7%, respectively, and reduced the liver total cholesterol and triglyceride levels by 23.0 and 33.5%, respectively. The activity of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) was reduced 34.6% and 23.6% respectively, by the exobiopolymer administration, compared to the control group. The exobiopolymer was found to contain 83.2% carbohydrate and 16.8% protein. The sugar and amino acid of the exobiopolymer were also analyzed in detail.

  • In this study, we precisely showed how the Rg3-enriched red ginseng extract (Rg3-RGE) lowers glucose, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in $LDL^{-/-}$ mice. Aspartate aminotransferase/serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase), alanine aminotransferase /serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase, and steatohepatitis were found to be reduced, and atheroma formation was inhibited by Rg3-enriched red ginseng extract.

In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of morin on the dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Oral administration of morin (10, 20mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phospatase, and bilirubin levels.   • Aspirin and aspirin-like nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug have been the mainstay of therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of aspirin on the dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Oral administration of aspirin (7.5, 15mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase, and bilirubin levels. Aspirin also increased serum protein level and reduced the hepatic level of malondialdehyde in DMN-treated rats. (omitted)

  • Quercetin, one of the most abundant flavonoids in human diet has been reported to exhibit a wide range of pharmacological properties. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of quercetin on hepatic fibrosis induced by dimethylnitrosamine (DMN) in rats. Treatment with DMN caused a significant decrease in body and liver weight. Oral administration of quercetin (10 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) remarkably prevented this DMN-induced loss in body and liver weight and inhibited the elevation of serum alanine transaminase. aspartate transaminase, and bilirubin levels.   • Glutamate decarboxylase catalyzes the conversion of glutamate to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), contributing to pH homeostasis through proton consumption. The reaction is the first step toward the GABA shunt. To date, the enzymes involved in the glutamate metabolism of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida have not been elucidated. In this study, an open reading frame of P. damselae subsp. piscicida, showing homology to the glutamate decarboxylase or putative pyridoxal-dependent aspartate 1-decarboxylase genes, was isolated and cloned into an expression vector to produce the recombinant enzyme. Preliminary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry characterization of the purified recombinant enzyme revealed that it catalyzed not only the decarboxylation of glutamate but also the transamination of GABA. This enzyme of P. damselae subsp. piscicida could be bifunctional, combining decarboxylase and transaminase activities in a single polypeptide chain.
