Efficient neural circuit reconstruction requires sufficient lateral and axial resolution to resolve individual synapses and map a large enough volume of brain tissue to reveal the molecular identity and origin of these synapses. Sparse circuit reconstruction using array tomography meets many of these requirements but also has some limitations. In this minireview, the advantages and disadvantages of applicable imaging techniques will be discussed.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) plays a central role in analyzing structures by imaging a large area of brain tissue at nanometer scales. A vast amount of data in the large area are required to study structural changes of cellular organelles in a specific cell, such as neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia among brain tissue, at sufficient resolution. Array tomography is a useful method for large-area imaging, and the osmium-thiocarbohydrazide-osmium (OTO) and ferrocyanide-reduced osmium methods are commonly used to enhance membrane contrast. Because many samples prepared using the conventional technique without en bloc staining are considered inadequate for array tomography, we suggested an alternative technique using post-staining conventional samples and compared the advantages.
Anomalies and/or fractured grounds not detected by the surface geophysical and geological survey performed during design stage may cause significant problems during tunnel excavation. Many studies on prediction methods of the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been conducted and applied in tunneling construction sites, such as tunnel seismic profiling and probe drilling. However, most such applications have focused on the drill and blast tunneling method. Few studies have been conducted for mechanized tunneling because of the limitation in the available space to perform prediction tests. This study aims to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in TBM tunneling by using an electrical resistivity tomography survey. It compared the characteristics of each electrode array and performed an investigation on in-situ tunnel boring machine TBM construction site environments. Numerical simulations for each electrode array were performed, to determine the proper electrode array to predict anomalies ahead of the tunnel face. The results showed that the modified dipole-dipole array is, compared to other arrays, the best for predicting the location and condition of an anomaly. As the borehole becomes longer, the measured data increase accordingly. Therefore, longer boreholes allow a more accurate prediction of the location and status of anomalies and complex grounds.
We designed a depth-encoding positron emission tomography (PET) detector by using a bottom and side readout method with a cross-arranged scintillator array. To evaluate the characteristics of the novel detector module, we used the DETECT2000 simulation tool to perform the optical photon transport in the crystal array. The detector module consists of an $M(column){\times}N(row)$ cross-arranged crystal array composed of M/3 sub-arrays consisting of $N{\times}3$ crystals. The second column of the sub-array is arranged perpendicular to the first and the third columns. The crystal is optically coupled to the crystals of the other columns; however, the surfaces between the crystals in the same column are treated as reflectors. A $6{\times}5$ crystal array consisting of two sub-arrays was considered for proof of concept. The two multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) arrays are coupled to the bottom and one side of the crystal array, respectively. The x-y position is determined by the bottom MPPC array, and the side MPPC array gives depth information. All pixels in the x-y plane and the z direction were clearly distinguished.
Resistivity tomography has become an important tool to image underground resistivity distribution. This method has been widely applied to site investigation for engineering and environmental purpose. In resistivity tomography, various electrode arrays can be used and each array has both merits and demerits. For example, the pole-pole array has high signal to noise ratio (S/N ratio), but its resolution is too low. The dipole-dipole array has low S/N ratio, but its resolution is very high. The Pole-dipole may has intermediate Snf ratio and resolution. The modified Pole-dipole array, recently proposed, shows reasonable S/N ratio and resolution, which are comparable to the pole-dipole array. These electrode arrays except the pole-pole array, however, have the problem that the apparent resistivity can diverge at some special electrode Positions. Also, the Pole-Pole array may not reflect the doe resistivity of an anomalous body. In this study, we propose a new electrode array, mixed array, where pole-dipole and modified pole-dipole ways are selectively used with the relative positions of current and potential electrodes. The mixed array has the same level of S/N ratio and resolution as the pole-dipole array and the apparent resistivity does not diverge in the receiver hole. Furthermore, the apparent resistivity using the array can reflect the true resistivity of the anomalous body.
We demonstrate a k-domain linearization using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography based on a wavelength swept laser. The k-domain linearization is carried out with an interpolation method using a FBG array with five FBGs. The measured signal-to-noise ratio from the point spread function after k-domain linearization is 12 dB improved over that of without k-domain linearization at the 1 mm depth of the sample. Clear OCT imaging of the slide glass with k-domain linearization could be obtained.

Photoacoustic Tomography (PAT) is a promising medical imaging modality by reason of its particularity. It combines optical imaging contrast of optical imaging with the spatial resolution of ultrasound imaging and can demonstrate change of biological feature in an image. For that reason, many studies are in progress to apply this technic for diagnosis. But, real-time PAT system is necessary to confirm a biological reaction induced by external stimulation immediately. Thus, we developed a real-time PAT system using linear array transducer and self-developed Data acquisition board (DAQ) resources, To evaluate the feasibility and performance of our proposed system, two type of phantom test were also performed. As a result of those experiments, the proposed system shows enough performance and confirm its usefulness.
Positron emission tomography for small animals has very high spatial resolution for imaging very small organs. To achieve good spatial resolution, the system must be constructed using very small scintillation pixels. When a detector is constructed using very small scintillation pixels, the size of the applicable array varies depending on the photosensor pixel. In a previous study, a study was conducted to find the maximum scintillation pixel arrangement according to the size of the photosensor. In this study, a detector with a light guide was designed to configure the detector using a more extended array of scintillation pixels, and try to find the maximum arrangement in which all scintillation pixels are imaged. The detector was designed using DETECT2000, which can simulate a detector made of a scintillator. Simulations were performed by configuring the detectors from an 11 × 11 scintillation pixel array to a 16 × 16 array. After obtaining a flood image by collecting the light generated from the scintillation pixel with a photosensor, the largest arrangement without overlap was found through image analysis. As a result, the largest arrangement in which all scintillation pixels could be distinguished without overlapping was a 15 × 15 arrangement.

Rock mass classification by using electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) method is widely performed for the determination of rock support type in tunnel design. In the region of high electrical noise level, however, the result of the ERT will have many erroneous features. In this study, the back ground electrical noise had been measured to find out the reason why the results of ERT in this area did not agree to the expected geology confirmed by boreholes. In order to overcome this limitation of ERT, a hybrid surface-borehole array seismic refraction tomography had been followed. Using this technique, we could get P-wave velocity section including the depth level of tunnel. The comparison of the P-wave velocity and RMR shows fairly good statistical relationship to make it possible to set up the rock mass classification for the entire tunnel line.
As the Non Destructive Test (NDT) for the welded structure, PT(Penetration Test). MT(Magnetic Test), RT (Radioisotope Test) and UT(Ultrasonic Test) methods are widely used in practice. These NDT methods have been developed toward high efficiency, low cost, real time, and high precise new NDT. For example, RT methods are developed to CT(Computed Tomography)and DR(Digital Radiography), and UT metheds are developed into Phased array, Guide wave, TOFD method. Moreover, the Infrared thermography and Laser ultrasonic technique are newly developed for applying in high temperature objects as the non-contact NDT methods. In this review paper the new high efficiency NDT methods for the welded structure are introduced and the trend of NDT rules applying in welded structure are described.
