Sorption of Thiocyanate Silver Complexes and Determination of Silver by Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy

  • The present paper is focused on sorption concentration of silver (I) on some complex-forming ion exchangers in the initial thiocyanate form and subsequent determination of Ag(I) in the phase of anion exchanger AN-25 by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The sorption and kinetic characteristics of the sorbents were investigated. The apparent stability constants of thiocyanate silver complexes in the ion exchanger phase were calculated. The sorption-spectroscopic method is proposed for Ag(I) determination in aqueous solutions. The calibration curve is linear in the concentration range of 10-200 mg/L (sample volume is 10.0 mL) and the detection limit is 2 $\mu$g/mL. The presence of $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+}$ (macrocomponents) as well as of Ni (II), Co (II), Cu (II) do not hinder the determination of silver (I).

Basic Zirconium Sulfate의 제조와 그 열분해 거동 (The Preparation and Thermal Decomposition of the Basic Zirconium Sulfate)

  • The basic zirconium sulfate was prepared from ZrOCl2.8H2O and H2SO4 in the 9$0^{\circ}C$ aqueous solution. The pH and amount of unreacted zirconium in the solution that reacton had completed was 0.2 and 10%. As the pH was increased to 1.4 by NH4OH theresulting precipitates were the mixtures of the basic zirconium sulfate and the zirconium hydroxide although the precipitates were recovered completely. The thermal decomposition behavior of this sample has been examined by thermal analysis(TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction study, infrared spectroscopy and sulfur analysis. As a result, it was found that the precipitates have perfectly been decomposed at 85$0^{\circ}C$ accompanying to the release of a molecule of water below 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 85% sulfate at about $600^{\circ}C$. The thermally decomlposed products were initially amorphous phase, which were become metastable tetragonal phase with increment of temperature and finally transformed to the stable monoclinic phase at 100$0^{\circ}C$.

Determination of Monocrotophos Residues by HPLC

  • An analytical method was developed to determine monocrotophos residues in apple, citrus, and soil using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet absorption detection. Monocrotophos was extracted with acetone from apple, citrus and moist soil samples. The extract was concentrated, added with saline water, and subjected to n-hexane washing to remove nonpolar co-extractives. Dichloromethane partition was then followed to recover monocrotophos from the aqueous phase. Silica gel column chromatography was employed to further purify the extract prior to HPLC determination. Reverse-phase HPLC using an oct-adecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate the monocrotophos residue in sample extracts at the wavelength of 230 nm. Overall recoveries of monocrotophos from fortified samples averaged $95.3{\pm}2.1%$ (n=6), $970{\pm}0.7%$ (n=6), and $92.8{\pm}4.3%$ (n=12) for apple, citrus, and soil, respectively. The proposed method was quite reproducible and sensitive enough to replace the troublesome gas-liquid chromatographic analysis for monocrotophos residues.

Three Binary Ion-Exchange Isotherms in Zeolite A : $Cs^+-Ag^+$ , $Ag^+-Na^+$ , and $NH_4^+-Na^+$

  • Three binary ion-exchange isotherms of zeolite A have been determined using 0.1 M solutions of the aqueous nitrates for the one-step preparation of particular mixed-cation zeolite A compositions. Analyses were done primarily by flame emission spectrometry (FES), together with crystallographic determinations of $Cs^+$ and colorimetric determinations of $NH_{4^+}$. Corrections for a presumed impurity of extra-lattice species in powder sample were made for the determination of $Na^+$. The $Cs^+-Ag^+$ isootherm indicates a strong selectivity for $Ag^+$ through the entire range of zeolite composition. The $Ag^+-Na^+$ isotherm agrees very closely with that reported by Sherry and Walton, and that of $NH_{4^+}-Na^+$ resembles those obtained using zeolite pellets.

Corrosion resistance improvement of 6061 aluminum alloy using anodizing process

  • Aluminum alloy is a material that is frequently used in the aerospace and transportation industries due to its high mechanical and corrosion resistance qualities. Unfortunately, aluminum alloys are prone to corrosion, limiting their application in some harsh situations such as when submerged in aqueous environments. The purpose of this study is to investigate how anodizing can increase the corrosion resistance of 6061 Aluminum alloy. The anodizing process was carried out using two different parameters which are voltage (5V, 10V, 15V) and electrolyte sulfuric acid (H2SO4) concentration (0.3M, 0.5M) for 1 hour. The anodized samples were performed using several analyses such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, morphology analysis, and corrosion test. From this study, it is found that the difference in anodizing parameters affects the corrosion resistance of the samples. Sample anodized at 15V, 0.5M gives the best corrosion resistance.

Development and validation of a qualitative GC-MS method for methamphetamine and amphetamine in human urine using aqueous-phase ethyl chloroformate derivatization

  • Methamphetamine (MA) is the most common and available drug of abuse in Korea and its primary metabolite is amphetamine (AP). Detection of AP derivatives, such as MA, AP, phentermine (PT), MDA, MDMA, and MDEA by the use of immunoassay screening is not reliable and accurate due to cross-reactivity and insufficient specificity/sensitivity. Therefore, the analytical process accepted by most urine drug-testing programs employs the two-step method with an initial screening test followed by a more specific confirmatory test if the specimen screens positive. In this study, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method was developed and validated for confirmation of MA and AP in human urine. Urine sample (500 µL) was added with N-isopropylbenzylamine as internal standard and ethyl chloroformate as a derivatization reagent, and then extracted with 200 µL of ethyl acetate. Extracted samples were analysed with GC-MS in the SIM/ Scan mode, which were screened by Cobas c311 analyzer (Roche/Hitachi) to evaluate the efficiency as well as the compatibility of the GC-MS method. Qualitative method validation requirements for selectivity, limit of detection (LOD), precision, accuracy, and specificity/sensitivity were examined. These parameters were estimated on the basis of the most intense and characteristic ions in mass spectra of target compounds. Precision and accuracy were less than 5.2 % (RSD) and ±14.0 % (bias), respectively. The LODs were 3 ng/mL for MA and 1.5 ng/mL for AP. At the screening immunoassay had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 95.1 % versus GC-MS for confirmatory testing. The applicability of the method was tested by the analysis of spiked urine and abusers' urine samples.

금 나노입자 촉매를 이용한 단결정 실리콘의 전기화학적 식각을 통한 무반사 특성 개선 (Improved Antireflection Property of Si by Au Nanoparticle-Assisted Electrochemical Etching)

  • 금 나노입자 촉매를 이용한 전기화학적 식각법에 의해 실리콘 표면에 짧은 시간의 효과적인 텍스쳐링을 통한 나노구조를 제작하여 무반사 특성을 조사하였다. 실험을 위해, 열증발증착법과 급속열처리법을 이용하여 단결정 실리콘 표면에 20 nm에서 150 nm 크기의 금 나노입자를 형성하였고, 습식식각을 위해 금 나노입자가 코팅된 실리콘을 과산화수소와 불화수소가 포함된 식각용액에 1분 동안 담가두었다. 전기화학적 습식식각을 확인하기위해, 금 나노입자가 코팅된 실리콘을 음극으로 각각 -1 V와 -2 V의 전압을 인가하여 식각깊이와 반사율 스펙트럼을 비교하였다. 태양광 스펙트럼(air mass 1.5)을 고려하여 태양가중치 반사율을 계산한 결과, 전압을 인가하지 않고 식각된 실리콘 표면의 반사율이 25.8%인 반면, -2 V의 전압을 인가하여 8.2%로 반사율을 크게 줄일 수 있었다.

벤토나이트 완충재의 구리치환 반응 특성 (Characteristics for the Copper Exchange Reaction by Bentonite Buffer)

  • 고준위폐기물의 심지층 처분을 위해 완충재인 벤토나이트가 반드시 필요하고, 지하 환경에서 이 물질의 장기적 특성 변화를 아는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 실험에서 폐기물 금속용기의 구리코팅 성분이 부식되면서 구리이온 농도가 증가한다고 가정하였을 때, 완충재인 벤토나이트 점토(몬모릴로나이트)의 층간 양이온들의 이온교환 및 용출 특성 등을 실험을 통해 살펴보았다. 용존 구리와 벤토나이트와의 반응실험에서 팽창성 점토의 Na가 선택적으로 먼저 Cu에 의해 치환되었고 Ca는 상대적으로 시간을 두고 이온교환되었다. 그리고 구리로 치환된 몬모릴로나이트는 X-선회절 분석결과 원시료에 비해 층간간격이 다소 줄어든 특징적인 비대칭 회절형태로 관찰되었다. 이러한 실험결과는 지하처분조건에서 고유 벤토나이트 성질의 점진적인 변화를 간접적으로 지시하는 것으로, 향후 다양한 추가실험을 통해 처분장 완충재의 화학적 광물학적 특성 변화를 연구할 계획이다.

Detection of Ocular Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Chronic Irregular Recurrent Uveitis by PCR

  • Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite resulting in human infections and one of the infectious pathogens leading to uveitis and retinochoroiditis. The present study was performed to assess T. gondii infection in 20 ocular patients with chronic irregular recurrent uveitis (20 aqueous humor and 20 peripheral blood samples) using PCR. All samples were analyzed by nested PCR targeting a specific B1 gene of T. gondii. The PCR-positive rate was 25% (5/20), including 5% (1) in blood samples, 25% (5) in aqueous humor samples, and 5% (1) in both sample types. A molecular screening test for T. gondii infection in ocular patients with common clinical findings of an unclear retinal margin and an inflammatory membrane over the retina, as seen by fundus examination, may be helpful for early diagnosis and treatment.

유도결합 플라즈마 원자방출 분광법에 의한 아연광 중 Ga 및 In의 분석에 관한 연구 (Studies on Analysis of Gallium and Indium in Zinc Ores by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry)

  • 아연광 중 미량으로 존재하는 갈륨 및 인듐을 유도결합 플라스마 원자방출분광법(ICP-AES)으로 분석할 때 간섭하는 아연 및 다른 이온들과 특히 Fe(III) 이온으로부터 이들을 분리하는 방법에 대해 연구하였다. 갈륨과 인듐을 tributyl phosphate(TBP)로 용매추출하였는데 이때 영향을 주는 산농도, 다른 이온들의 간섭, 수용액상/유기상의 비율, TBP의 농도 및 탈거율 등에 대하여 조사하였다. 갈륨과 인듐이 함유되어 있는 아연광을 녹인 5N 염산용액에서 100% TBP로 추출하여 아연 및 기타 간섭이온들로부터 분리하였으며, 이때 철(III)이온은 hydroxylamine hydrochloride를 사용하여 Fe(II)로 환원시켜 coetraction되는 것을 방지하였다. 유기상으로부터 갈륨과 인듐의 탈거는 0.02N 염산용액으로 역추출하여 이루어졌으며 이 용액을 ICP-AES로 측정하여 이들을 정량하였다. 전체적으로 추출률이 95% 이상으로 정량적이었다.
