In several design codes and specifications, simplified formulae and diagrams are given for determining the buckling lengths of frame columns. It is shown that these formulae may yield rather erroneous results in certain cases. This is due to the fact that, the code formulae utilise only local stiffness distributions. In this paper, a simplified procedure for determining approximate values for the buckling loads of multi-storey frames is developed. The procedure utilises lateral load analysis of frames and yields errors in the order of 10%, which may be considered suitable for design purposes. The proposed procedure is applied to several numerical examples and it is shown that all the errors are in the acceptable range and on the safe side.

Although the $L_0$-penalty is the most natural choice to identify the sparsity structure of the model, it has not been widely used due to the computational bottleneck. Recently, the adaptive ridge procedure is developed to efficiently approximate a $L_q$-penalized problem to an iterative $L_2$-penalized one. In this article, we proposed to apply the adaptive ridge procedure to solve the $L_0$-penalized weighted support vector machine (WSVM) to facilitate the corresponding optimization. Our numerical investigation shows the advantageous performance of the $L_0$-penalized WSVM compared to the conventional WSVM with $L_2$ penalty for both simulated and real data sets.
Geometric nonlinearity can significantly affect load-carrying capacity of slender columns. Dependence of structural stability on columns necessitates the consideration of second-order effects in the design process of columns, appropriately. On the whole, the design codes present a simplified procedure for second order analysis of slender columns. In this approximate method, the end moments of columns resulted from linear analysis (first-order) are multiplied by the recommended moment amplification factors of codes to achieve magnified moments of the second-order analysis. In the other approach, the equilibrium equations are directly solved for the deformed configuration of structure, so the resulting moments and deflections contain the influence of slenderness and increase more rapidly than do loads. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of moment amplification factors of Iranian national building code whose provisions are similar to the ACI requirement. Herein, finite element method is used to achieve magnified end moments of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames, and the outcomes are compared with the moments acquired based on the proposed approximate method by Iranian national building code. The results show that the approximate method of Iranian code for calculating magnified moments has significant errors for both unbraced and braced columns.
For scaling of the gradient of misfit function, we develop a new pseudo-Hessian matrix constructed by combining amplitude field and pseudo-Hessian matrix. Since pseudo- Hessian matrix neglects the calculation of the zero-lag auto-correlation of impulse responses in the approximate Hessian matrix, the pseudo-Hessian matrix has a limitation to scale the gradient of misfit function compared to the approximate Hessian matrix. To validate the new pseudo- Hessian matrix, we perform frequency-domain elastic full waveform inversion using this Hessian matrix. By synthetic experiments, we show that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can give better convergence to the true model than the old one does. Furthermore, since the amplitude fields are intrinsically obtained in forward modeling procedure, we do not have to pay any extra cost to compute the new pseudo-Hessian. We think that the new pseudo-Hessian matrix can be used as an alternative of the approximate Hessian matrix of the Gauss-Newton method.

In order to establish a theoretical basis for the analyses of transient behaviors in stratified thermal storage tanks, analytical approaches to an improved one-dimensional model are made. In the present model the storage tank is treated as a finite region with an adiabatic tank exit, whereas it has been considered as a simple semi-infinite region previously. Application of the Laplace transformation and the Inversion theorem to the governing equations makes it possible to obtain an exact infinite-series solution, which is convergent only at sufficiently large time. Accordingly a complementary solution which is available for short times, i.e., the time range of this study is sought by an approximate method. The approximate solution which is rigorously validated through the examination of neglected terms in the solution procedure agrees quite well with the exact one. Moreover, it is simpler to use and more convenient to interpret the physical meaning of the solution. Comparison of the present solution with the previous ones shows relatively large difference near the tank bottom, which results from the more realistic boundary condition adopted in the present model. Some representative results by the approximate solution including effects of the Peclet number on temperature distrbutions are illustrated to show the utility of this study. In consequence, it is expected that the present results based on the improved model replace the foregoing ones as a new theoretical reference for studies of thermal stratification fields.

In performance-based design methods, it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear tim history analyses, or monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated inelastic influences. The nonlinear time analysis is the most accurate method in computing the nonlinear response of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. Some codes proposed the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis to determine earthquake-induced demand given the structure pushover curve. This procedure is conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. The nonlinear direct spectrum method is proposed and studied to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis. The purpose of this paper is to compare the accuracy and the reliability of approximate nonlinear methods with respect to RC dual system and various earthquakes.

A rational method for prediction of long-term deflections of reinforced concrete beams under sustained loads was proposed. Strain and stress distributions of uncracked and fully cracked sections after creep and shrinkage were determined from the requirements of strain compatibility and force equilibrium of a section, and then long-term deflections were calculated from the section analysis results. In fully cracked section analysis, noncoincidence of the neutral axis of strain and the neutral axis of stress after creep and shrinkage was taken into account. The accuracy of the proposed method was verified by comparison with several experimental measurements of beam deflections. The proposed approximate procedure gave the better predictions than the existing approximate methods. At the same time, the proposed method also retained simplicity of the calculation, since maximum long-term deflection could be obtained without tedious integration of the curvatures.
In this paper, we give an estimate on the difference between $x^n(t)$ and x(t) and it clearly shows that one can use the Picard iteration procedure to the approximate solutions to stochastic functional differential equations with infinite delay at phase space BC(($-{\infty}$, 0] : $R^d$) which denotes the family of bounded continuous $R^d$-valued functions ${\varphi}$ defined on ($-{\infty}$, 0] with norm ${\parallel}{\varphi}{\parallel}={\sup}_{-{\infty}<{\theta}{\leq}0}{\mid}{\varphi}({\theta}){\mid}$ under non-Lipschitz condition being considered as a special case and a weakened linear growth condition.

We are concerned with the packing policy determines the optimal packing of products with variable sizes to minimize the penalty costs for idle space and product spliting. Optimal packing problem is closely related to the optimal packet/record sizing problem in that randomly generated data stream with variable bytes are divided into a unit of packet/record for transmitting or storing. Assuming the product size and the production period are independently determined by renewal process, we can approximate the renewal process and formulate the optimization problem that minimize the expected packing cost for a production period. The problem is divided into two cases according to whether a product is allowed to split or not. Computational results for various distributions will be given to verify the approximation procedure and the resulting optimization problem.

This paper presents a methodology for determining machining conditions in Electric Discharge Wire-Cut. Unification of two phase neural network approach with an automatic generation of machining parameters is designed. The first phase neural network, which is 1 to M backward-mapping neural net, produces approximate machining conditions. Using approximate conditions, all possible conditions are newly created by the proposed automatic generation procedure. The second phase neural net, which is a M to 1 forward-mapping neural net, determines the best one among the generated candidates. Simulation results with ANN are given to verify that the presenting methodology could apply for determining machining parameters in Electric Discharge Wire-Cut.
