Investigating the Impact of Discrete Emotions Using Transfer Learning Models for Emotion Analysis: A Case Study of TripAdvisor Reviews

  • Online reviews play a significant role in consumer purchase decisions on e-commerce platforms. To address information overload in the context of online reviews, factors that drive review helpfulness have received considerable attention from scholars and practitioners. The purpose of this study is to explore the differential effects of discrete emotions (anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise) on perceived review helpfulness, drawing on cognitive appraisal theory of emotion and expectation-confirmation theory. Emotions embedded in 56,157 hotel reviews collected from TripAdvisor.com were extracted based on a transfer learning model to measure emotion variables as an alternative to dictionary-based methods adopted in previous research. We found that anger and fear have positive impacts on review helpfulness, while disgust and joy exert negative impacts. Moreover, hotel star-classification significantly moderates the relationships between several emotions (disgust, fear, and joy) and perceived review helpfulness. Our results extend the understanding of review assessment and have managerial implications for hotel managers and e-commerce vendors.

  • This study explores the types of epistemic emotions that elementary-school students experience in science classes and the cognitive appraisal factors that affect these emotions. Thirty-two fourth-grade students of an elementary school in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, participated in 20 science periods and wrote emotional diaries at the end of each class. In addition, the researcher conducted follow-up interviews to investigate the types of cognitive appraisal factors that caused the students to experience specific epistemic emotions that were recorded in their emotional diaries. The emotional diaries and interview data were analyzed using the constant comparative method of qualitative analysis. As a result, it was found that students experienced various positive and negative epistemic emotions. In addition, the cognitive appraisal factors experienced by the students were categorized into curriculum knowledge, experimental materials, experimental content, students, teachers, themselves, and integrated factors. We discussed that students' epistemic emotions are constructed cognitively and socially and that students inevitably experience negative epistemic emotions during science classes.

The Effects of Employees' Emotional Intelligence upon Organizational Citizenship Behavior and Job Performance in the Foodservice Industry (외식업체 직원의 감성지능이 조직시민행동과 직무성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study is to understand the influence of the employees' emotional intelligence in the foodservice industry on organizational citizenship behavior and job performance and to empirically analyze whether organizational citizenship behavior plays a mediating role between both the relations of the employees' emotional intelligence and job performance. Based on total 421 samples obtained from an empirical research, this study reviews the reliability and fitness of the research model and verifies a total of 3 hypotheses using the Amos program. The SEM results show that others' emotion appraisal, emotion use, self-emotion appraisal and emotion regulation among employees' emotional intelligence have a significantly positive effect on organizational citizenship behavior. Also, employees' organizational citizenship behavior have a significantly positive effect on job performance. In addition, the effect of the employees' emotional intelligence in the foodservice industry upon job performance find to be partially mediated by the organizational citizenship behavior.

  • Recently emotional labor is an essential situation for hospital employees in relation to surface and deep acting as the core of emotional labor strategies. This study empirically examines the relation between hospital employees' emotional intelligence and emotional labor strategies in the context of emotional labor. For empirical experiments, we conducted a questionnaire survey targeting hospital employees, and we employed the method of Partial Least Squares (PLS) for data analysis. Major findings are as follows. Hospital employees' emotional intelligence including self emotion appraisal, others' emotion appraisal, regulation of emotion, and use of emotion, have a significantly positive effect on hospital employees' deep acting. And hospital employees' deep acting has a significantly positive effect on hospital employees' organizational attachment, knowledge sharing intentions, and innovative activities.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among emotional intelligence, organizational communication satisfaction and job satisfaction. The subjects were 150 nurses who work for a university hospital in Seoul. The data were collected using self-report questionnaire and analyzed using the SPSS Win 17.0 program. In result, The degree of emotional intelligence was order to regulation of emotion, use of emotion, other's emotion appraisal, self emotion appraisal. Job satisfaction were significantly correlation between emotional intelligence and organizational communication satisfaction. And The higher job satisfaction was showed the higher emotional intelligence and organizational communication satisfaction. Therefore, To increase job satisfaction will be work out a strategy highly emotional intelligence and organizational communication satisfaction. It is need to improve the nurse's organizational satisfaction and base on the program development.

Emotional Intelligence and Job Stress of Clinical Nurses in Local Public Hospitals (간호사의 정서지능과 직무스트레스 - 지방공립의료원을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and job stress of clinical nurses in small to medium-sized hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 152 nurses working in 4 local public hospitals in one district. EI was measured with the scale developed by Law, Wong, & Song (2004), and job stress with the scale by Choi, Kang, & Woo (2006). Data were analyzed with PASW (SPSS) 18.0, using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in EI according to work time, in self-emotional appraisal according to salary, in regulation of emotion according to marital status, age, work time, and salary. There were also significant differences in job stress including somatization, depression and anger according to marital status, work time, and salary. Correlation between EI and job stress was negative. EI explained 17.3% of variance in job stress. Conclusion: The findings indicate that to decrease job stress, nursing managers need to develop EI, especially self-emotional appraisal and regulation of emotion for nurses in their twenties and for unmarried nurses.

Emotional Intelligence Profile and Employee Attitude

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify emotional intelligence (EI) profiles according to the sub-factors of the ability EI model, namely, self-emotional appraisal, others' emotional appraisal, regulation of emotion, and use of emotion. In addition, this study aims to reveal whether there is a difference in job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention depending on the profile. Research design, data, and methodology - For the study, 536 survey responses were analyzed using SPSS 22 and MPlus 8.4. Result - The analysis identified four EI profiles. These were 1) middle-low generalized EI (all sub-factors of EI were slightly lower than the average level), 2) middle-high generalized EI (all sub-factors of EI were slightly higher than the average), 3) low generalized EI (all EI sub-factors were much lower than the average), and 4) high generalized EI (all EI sub-factors were much higher than average). Furthermore, significant differences were found in job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention according to each profile. Conclusion - This study expands the EI theory by revealing the profile of EI. In addition, this study investigated the impact of EI profile on job satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention.

Analysis of Emotional Intelligence Affected by Medical Institution Members on Job Satisfaction and Self-Efficacy (의료기관 구성원이 직무만족도와 자기효능감에 느끼는 감성지능의 영향 분석)

  • In this study, we would like to confirm the impact of emotional intelligence perceived by members of medical institutions on job satisfaction and the mediating effect of self-efficacy. To test the hypothesis of the study, a survey was conducted on members of medical institutions (excluding doctors) in Gyeonggi Province, and statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0. First of all, the research results showed a positive impact only on use of emotion among the sub-factors of emotional intelligence in the impact relationship between emotional intelligence perceived by members on self-efficacy. Second, in the impact relationship of emotional intelligence on job satisfaction, which is a sub-factor of emotional intelligence, self-emotion appraisal, others' emotion appraisal, regulation of emotion, and use of emotion all showed positive effects. Third, the effect of members' self-efficacy on job satisfaction was also positive, and fourth, the mediating effect of self-efficacy between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction was also confirmed. Therefore, programs to improve members' emotional intelligence and self-efficacy are introduced and institutional needs are required.

  • This research presented research objective on service recovery equity and related scientific purpose and a practical view based on actual problems and needs of hotel restaurant service management, deriving following research results. First, through considering previous research related to service recovery equity, theoretical system on segmentation of customer appraisal through business situation variables and recovery equity are presented. Second, in the enlarged meaning of existing recovery equity and related previous research, relationship was examined closely through an analysis of new causal relationship on recovery equity and research on relationship between recovery equity and customer appraisal. Third, the effect of service recovery equity affecting consequences on satisfaction and the intention of action were analyzed through customer appraisal and examined the relationship between service recovery equity and customer attitude. In this research, implications on future scientific and practical views based on the results are as follows. Not only the necessity of further research on the general service industry but also research on customer appraisal systems were suggested by offering parameters segmented from service recovery through customer satisfaction and intention of action for customer appraisal.

Factors affecting clinical dental hygienist emotional intelligence on burnout (임상치과위생사의 감성지능이 소진에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the exhaustion of emotional intelligence of clinical dental hygienist and to improve the quality of customer service and effective management of clinical dental hygienist. The results of the study were as follows: 394 clinical dental hygienists working in Jeollabukdo from February 6 to May 31, 2017. Clinical dental hygienist's emotional intelligence showed a significant negative correlation with burnout(r=-.623, p<.001). Self emotion appraisal, others' emotion appraisal, and use of emotion were found to be related factors to exhaustion of clinical dental hygienist..Based on the results of this study, it would be necessary to develop programs to improve the emotional intelligence of clinical dental hygienists, to reduce burnout and to improve the work efficiency of clinical dental hygienists.
