  • Selection of appropriate knowledge acquisition and representation techniques is regarded as a major task in the development of expert systems. This depends on the characteristics of problem domains. Expert system builders have often adopted a technique without a formal analysis of application domains. The purpose of this paper is to provide the best knowledge aquisition and representation technique for use in human resource management problem domains. In an attempt to meet this purpose, the conceptual contingency model that suggests the best technique according to managerial decision categories is used as a guidance. In order to determine the priority of managerial decision categories, the Analytic Hierarchy Process and an extended method are proposed.

  • Let S and T be w-linked extension domains of a domain R with S ⊆ T. In this paper, we define what satisfying the wR-GD property for S ⊆ T means and what being wR- or w-GD domains for T means. Then some sufficient conditions are given for the wR-GD property and wR-GD domains. For example, if T is wR-integral over S and S is integrally closed, then the wR-GD property holds. It is also given that S is a wR-GD domain if and only if S ⊆ T satisfies the wR-GD property for each wR-linked valuation overring T of S, if and only if S ⊆ (S[u])w satisfies the wR-GD property for each element u in the quotient field of S, if and only if S𝔪 is a GD domain for each maximal wR-ideal 𝔪 of S. Then we focus on discussing the relationship among GD domains, w-GD domains, wR-GD domains, Prüfer domains, PνMDs and PwRMDs, and also provide some relevant counterexamples. As an application, we give a new characterization of PwRMDs. We show that S is a PwRMD if and only if S is a wR-GD domain and every wR-linked overring of S that satisfies the wR-GD property is wR-flat over S. Furthermore, examples are provided to show these two conditions are necessary for PwRMDs.

  • Perhaps one of the most versatile approaches to learning in practical domains lies in case based reasoning. To date, however, most case based reasoning systems have tended to focus on relatively simple domains. The current study involves the development of a decision support system for a complex production process with a limited database. This paper presents a set of critical issues underlying CBR, then explores their consequences for a complex domain. Finally, the performance of the system is examined for resolving various types of quality control problems.

  • In this paper, we dicuss on the properties related to the circular filtering in orthogonal transform domain. The efficient filtering schemes in six orthogonal transform domains are presented by generalizing the convolution-multiplication property of the DFT. In brief, the circular filtering can be accomplished by multiplying the transform domain filtering matrix W, which is shown to be very sparse, yielding the computational gains compared with the time domain processing. As an application, decimation and interpolation techniques in orthogonal transform domains are also investigated.

  • Engineered DNA-binding domains provide a powerful technology for numerous biomedical studies due to their ability to recognize specific DNA sequences. Zinc fingers (ZF) are one of the most common DNA-binding domains and have been extensively studied for a variety of applications, such as gene regulation, genome engineering and diagnostics. Another novel DNA-binding domain known as a transcriptional activator-like effector (TALE) has been more recently discovered, which has a previously undescribed DNA-binding mode. Due to their modular architecture and flexibility, TALEs have been rapidly developed into artificial gene targeting reagents. Here, we describe the methods used to design these DNA-binding proteins and their key applications in biomedical research.

  • Many proteins consist of distinctive domains that can act independently or cooperatively to achieve a unique function. As these domains evolve from a naturally existing repertoire of functional domains, this implies that domain organization is an intrinsic element involved in building the complex structure and function of proteins. Thus, identifying functional domains would appear to be critical to the elucidation of questions related to protein evolution, folding, and the engineering of hybrid proteins for tai- lored applications. However, the simple application of "Lego-like assembly" to the engineering of hybrid proteins is an oversimplification, as many hybrid constructs lack structural stability, usually due to unfavorable domain contacts. Thus, directed evolution, along with computational studies, may help to engineer hybrid proteins with improved physico-chemical properties. Accordingly, this paper introduces several approaches to functional hybrid protein engineering that potentially can be used to create modulators of gene transcription and cell signaling, and novel biosensors to analyze biological functions in vivo.

  • Over the years, several different approaches have been proposed to enhance the practice of software reuse. These approaches vary in reuse abstraction levels or application domains they focus on. However, it seems that they do not adequately meet the needs of software designers in planning and managing reuse. One reason may be the lack of conceptually well-established framework supporting work domain analysis and modeling. As a new viable solution to this problem, Sutcliffe and his colleagues developed Domain Theory , which is introduced in this paper. Utilizing multidisciplinary perspective, such as cognitive psychology, management science, human-computer interaction, and software engineering. it provides a schematic framework that defines a comprehensive library of generic and reusable models of domain knowledge in terms of generic tasks and meta-domains. It also provides useful methods and guidelines for software reuse, emphasizing the concept of abstraction process in a designer s mind. This paper firstly gives a brief overview of fundamentals of software reuse. Next, it explains the foundation of domain theory and discusses its applicability to software reuse. In particular, the taxonomy of meta-domains and the types of generic tasks are described in more detail. Finally, the future research framework, which primarily addresses the problem of how to apply the domain theory to various work domains, is proposed.

  • The computer system is used in many application domains and any system error in these domains may either cause critical loss or threaten environment or human life. Though examples of these domains can be found in many areas, the system, which is used in domains for carrying passengers including rolling stocks in particular, is expected to show satisfactory operation all the time. The relay control logic, which is used in rolling stocks, is complex in hardware and occupies considerably large volume. Nevertheless, it has been used for a long time, to let the system safely operate even in the occurrence of an error in the computer system. However, the relay control logic circuit is so complex that the analysis of proper circuit operation and interlocking tends to be dependent only on the designer's experiences instead of being systematically performed. Especially, the analysis following a change, addition and deletion of a previous circuit according to the requirements from a source of demand is significantly limited. In this paper, the accuracy of relay control logic is verified by the use of properties of Petri Net model. In addition, how main circuit breaker (MCB) control circuit is modeled and analyzed by the design methodology is shown.

  • We explore technology ecosystem of smart surgical medical system by analyzing patent data applied for in Korea and Japan. First, a review of trends of patent application by country/technological domain show that there exist a minority of technology domains focused on R&D, which represent their trends have been increasingly active. Also, while a number of Japanese firms mainly consist of the patent market of Japan, in case of the Korean market, a few universities, SMEs, and foreign firms are found to be the main applicants. As a result of the network analysis with the links as the relations of co-patenting, the relationships, which are active of convergence and knowledge spillover among the heterogeneous technology domains within each market, as well as the technology domains, which are the most active in international cooperation among each homogeneous domain, could get derived and visualized in the ecosystem. In addition, the technology domains in each patent market with leading locations, roles, and influence in the network can also be identified through the centrality analysis. In this study, the analysis for technology competitiveness are carried out focusing on patent activity and patent impact. The results denote that across all domains, the Japanese market may possess higher patent activity and patent impact compared to the Korean market. In consequence, we derive the position map for comparison by country and technology domain from a perspective considering comprehensively the multi-dimensional attributes based on the results of both network analysis and technology competitiveness.
