Water-insoluble chitosan with molecular weight of 2,000,000, 580,000, 80,000, and 40,000 and more than 90% of degree of deacetylation were prepared to test antibacterial activity of chitosan against a pathogenic bacteria, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). As experimental method, the Shake Flask Method (SFM) and Modified Shake Flask Method (MSFM) were applicated. The anti-microbial activity of chitosan/acetic acid aqueous solution is consistent irrespective of Mw of chitosan. MIC value of SFM measurement was 0.2 ppm, and MIC value of modified SFM measurement was 25 ppm. But MIC value of chitosan/acetic add solution and chitosan treated cotton filter paper was equally 5 ppm. The antibacterial activities of chitosan were different in different test measurements employed. The antibacterial activities of chitosan/acetic acid solution and chitosan treated cotton filter paper were also different. Therefore, it needs to be pointed out that the test measurements of anti-microbial activity have some problems.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the antibacterial effect of Streptococcus mutans of tea tree ingredient. Methods: The experimental groups were each given with different concentrations (30 or 50 vol%) of tea tree prepared in saline solution. The control group applied only saline solution. The tea tree coating of the specimen were examined under a scanning electron microscope. For the antibacterial activity test of the tea tree, the contact angle of the tea tree- coated specimen's surface was analyzed. The antibacterial effect against Streptococcus mutans was determined by counting the colony forming units (CFU). The statical statics were evaluated by using one-way ANOVA and paired t-test. Results: The tea tree treated group of hydrophilic more than non treated group. Antibacterial experiments demonstrated that tee tree solution was effective against Streptococcus mutans. However there was no significant difference in depending solution concentration groups. Conclusions: The antimicrobial activity of the tea tree containing solution showed its potential for use as coating for denture and medical materials.
The emergence of methicillin-resistant of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) has led to an urgent need for the discovery and development of new antibacterial agents. As part of an ongoing investigation into the antibacterial properties of the natural products, (2S)-7,4'-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-8-(${\gamma}$, ${\gamma}$-dimethylally)-f1avanone (2S-DMDF), isolated from the roots of Sophora flavescens, was found to be antibacterial active MRSA and VRE. Sophora flavescens has been used as antibacterial, antiviral, antiprotozoal, anti-inflammatory. Therefore, this study investigated the antibacterial activity of 2S-DMDF against all the bacterial strains tested. In this result, at the end point of an optically clear well, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 0.97 to 15.6 mg/ml for 2S-DMDF, from 125 to 256 mg/ml for ampicillin, and from 64 to 512 mg/ml for gentamicin with MRSA, also, 7.8 to 15.6 mg/ml for 2S-DMDF, from 125 to 256 mg/ml for ampicillin, and from 512 to 1024< mg/ml for vacomicin with VRE. These findings indicated that the application of the tested 2S-DMDF alone might prove useful in the control and treatment of MRSA and VRE infections.
In this study, we investigated antibacterial activity and nitric oxide production inhibitory effect of the methanol extract and its fractions from Paeoniae Radix. In antibacterial activity by the disc diffusion assay against S. aureus, S. epidermidis and P. aeruginosa, the ethyl acetate fraction showed stronger antibacterial activity than other fractions and the extract. Moreover, the ethyl acetate fraction showed strong nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell. However, in NO scavenging ability, the chloroform fraction was higher than the other fractions and the extract. In the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay against RAW 264.7 cell, the extract and fractions were exhibited normal LDH release level as nontoxic result without the ehtyl acetate fraction of 100 ${\mu}g/ml$. As a result, the ethyl acetate fraction and chloroform fraction of the methanol extract from Paeoniae Radix could be applicable to functional materials for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory related fields, respectively.
This study investigated the antibacterial activities of extracts and fractions of Sasa borealis against eight bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Psedomonas aerginosa, Salmonella choleraesuis, Serratia marcescens and Vibrio vulnificus) by broth dilution assay. Using survival curves, the kinetics of bacterial inactivation upon exposure to the extracts and fractions were followed for 24 h. In this same manner, MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values were determined by broth microdilution assay and then confirmed to be the extract concentrations that inhibited bacterial growth. Sasa borealis extracts showed antibacterial activities against all tested bacteria. In particular, all tested fractions of Sasa borealis had stronger activities than 70% ethanol extract. MIC of Sasa borealis extract was determined to be 5 mg/mL against Salmonella choleraesuis. All fractions of Sasa borealis extract had extremely strong antibacterial activities. MIC of fractions were determined to be 0.03~2.5 mg/mL. These results suggest that the extracts and fractions of Sasa borealis effectively inhibited bacterial growth and thus are useful as natural antibacterial agents.
In this study, the antibacterial activities of essential oil from Zanthoxylum schinifolium against four Gram-positive bacteria and six Gram-negative bacteria were investigated. The antibacterial activity of the oils was determined using the agar-well diffusion assay, MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration). In particular, essential oil from Z. schinifolium showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria than against Gram-negative bacteria. Essential oil from Z. schinifolium displayed large inhibition zones especially against Bacillus cereus (31 mm). At concentrations between 0 and $20\;{\mu}g/mL$ the oils showed an antibacterial effect against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against nine bacteria ranged from 1.25 to $5\;{\mu}g/mL$. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against eight bacterial ranged from 2.5 to $20\;{\mu}g/mL$, except Shigella sonnei. Furthermore, our finding on the antibacterial activities of essential oils from Zanthoxylum schinifolium validated the use of this plant for medical purposes.
In this study, we investigated on antioxidative activity, antibacterial activity against pathogens of acne and tyrosinase inhibitory activity in 75% EtOH extract and its fractions from bark of Prunus sargen tii. The total polyphenol and flavonoidcontent of the EtOAc fraction were found to be 378.0 mg/g and 67.5 mg/g as the highest content. In the measurement of DPPH radical scavenging ability, EtOAc and BuOH fraction were exhibited stronger scavenging ability than the other fractions and 75% EtOH extract. In antibacterial activity by disc diffusion assay against pathogen of acne, antibacterial activity of the EtOAc fraction and 75% EtOH extract was stronger than the other fractions. Especially, the EtOAc fraction was the highest effective fraction in the antibacterial activity. Moreover, tyrosinase inhibitory activity of EtOAc fraction, BuOH fraction and 75% EtOH extract was higher than the other fractions. In particular, tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the EtOAc fraction showed higher activity than ascorbic acid used as positive control.
In this study, we investigated antioxidative activity, antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and tyrosinase inhibitory activity in 75% ethanol extract of Taraxacum coreanum and its fractions. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the extract were 238.59mg/g and 33.18mg/g and the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the ethyl acetate fraction were 427.81mg/g and 148.90mg/g as the highest content of fractions. In DPPH radical scavenging ability, $SC_{50}$ values of the ethyl acetate and butanol fraction were 38.40${\mu}g/ml$ and 82.28 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. In antibacterial activity by the disc diffusion assay against S. aureus, S. epidermidis and MRSA, the ethyl acetate fraction showed stronger antibacterial activity than other fractions and the extract. Especially, the ethyl acetate fraction was exhibited effective antibacterial activity against MRSA. In the cytotoxicity measurement by MTT assay, the extract and fractions were exhibited Raw 264.7 cell viabilities of 96.32~143.21% as nontoxic result in concentration of 5~100 ${\mu}g/ml$. As a result, the ethyl acetate fraction of the 75% ethanol extract from T. coreanum could be applicable to functional materials for related fields.
Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of self-etching adhesive systems against Streptococcus mutans using the agar diffusion method. Materials and Methods: Three 2-step systems, Clearfil SE Bond (SE, Kuraray), Contax (CT, DMG), and Unifil Bond (UnB, GC), and three 1-step systems, Easy Bond (EB, 3M ESPE), U-Bond (UB, Vericom), and All Bond SE (AB, BISCO) were used. 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX, Bukwang) and 37% phosphoric acid gel (PA, Vericom) were used as positive controls. Results: The antibacterial activity of CHX and PA was stronger than that of the other groups, except SE. After light activation, the inhibition zone was reduced in the case of all 2-step systems except CT. However, all 1-step systems did not exhibit any inhibition zone upon the light activation. Conclusions: SE may be better than CT or UnB among the 2-step systems with respect to antibacterial activity, however, 1-step systems do not exhibit any antibacterial activity after light curing.
Recently, with an increase of interest in hygiene of textile products, research related to finishing technology to impart various functionalities, such as antibacterial and deodorizing properties, has also required. Therefore, in this study, the improvement of comfort was examined by analyzing the change of moisture characteristics and antibacterial and deodorizing properties of underwear fabric by chitosan microcapsule(CH-M) finishing. The results revealed that moisture absorption time of the fabric shortened, diffusion rate increased, while absorption rate slightly increased because of microcapsule finishing. In addition, the one-way transfer capacity of the microcapsule finished fabric was 17.69, which improved moisture transfer to one side, while OMMC showed the values of 0.32 and 0.37 for untreated and finished fabrics, respectively, which slightly increased after finishing. In the case of untreated fabric, antibacterial activity was 89.0% against Staphylococcus aureus and 70.3% against Klebsiella pneumoniae; however, both strains showed 99.9% antibacterial activity by CH-M finishing. An excellent bacterial reduction rate was also observed. In the case of the CH-M finished fabric, there was a deodorization effect exceeding 99% up to 120 minutes, and it showed an excellent deodorization effect of more than 99% even after 10 repeated washings.
