The Study for Incidence Trends of Colorectal Cancer in Jeju-do (제주도 대장암 발생률 추세에 대한 연구)

  • The age-adjusted incidence rate (AAR) of colorectal cancer in Korea peaked in 2011 and then began to decline. However, the AAR of colorectal cancer in Jeju increased continually from 1999 to 2013. Compared with the 16 major cities in Korea, the inhabitants of Jeju-do have a low cancer screening program participation rate, high alcohol consumption rate and high BMI. The present study aimed to provide a statistical basis for the lowering of the incidence of colorectal cancer in Jeju-do. The Jeju regional cancer institute data from 1999 to 2013 was used to analyze the between Jeju-do and Korea using the Joinpoint Regression program (Statistical Methodology and Applications Branch, Surveillance Research Program, National Cancer Institute) Version 4.2.0 - April 2015. The AAR of colorectal cancer in Jeju-do has being increasing because of the increase in the rates of male colon cancer (average annual percent change 8.422%, p-value<0.000), female colon cancer (AAPC 6.136%, p-value<0.000), male rectal cancer (AAPC 4.221%, p-value 0.003) and colon cancer in people aged over 50 years (AAPC 7.986% p-value<0.000). The results of this study suggest that the treatment of precancerous lesions of the male rectum and lowering of the incidence of colon cancer in people aged over 50 years are necessary to reduce the colorectal cancer incidence rate in Jeju-do.

Monthly Gonadal and Sex Hormonal Changes of Indoor-Reared Seabass, Lateolabrax japonicus during Annual Reproductive Cycle (실내사육 농어, Lateolabrax japonicus의 생식소 및 성호르몬의 주년 변화)

  • The sea bass, Lateoiabrax japonicus is a highly valued fish in aquaculture in South Korea. For establishment of seedling production of sea bass,1 japonicus, we examined change of gonadal development and plasma steroid levels of sea bass reared in indoor tank. Male matured unsimultaneously faster than females and spawning of females took place between the end of January and March. After the spawning period, and until the following January, all the females were in preyitello genesis and in some males, spermatogenetic activity restarted gradually. In October, under reducing photoperiod, cortical alveoli appeared in growing oocyte and the development of spermatogenesis greatly increased. Between October and february, vitellogenesis and spermatogenesis occurred respectively in female and male and gonadosomatic index increased from 4.31 to $24.07\%$ in female and upper 6o/o in male. Also, two sex hormones were analyzed during the course of a reproductive cycle in the sea bass: plasma levels of the gonadal steroid testosterone (T) and estradiol-l7$\beta$ (E_{2}). Variation of the plasma concentrations of T and E, appeared to depend on gonad stages. Plasma T and E, levels were high from November to January, suggesting that an sufficient gonadal stimulation by both hormones may undergoing a processes for the formation of sperm and oocyte.

Relationship between Change in Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure among Industrial Workers (산업장 근로자들의 BMI 변화와 혈압 변화의 관련성)

  • This study was performed to elucidate the association of blood pressure and incidence of hypertension in response to changes in body mass index. A total of 28,249 industrial workers (male: 25,548, female: 2,701) who aged 30~69 years old, received regular medical check-up at least once per year from 2002 to 2012 (over 11 years) were included. In the analysis, the averages of blood pressure were stratified by BMI which was obtained from the initial examination results of each individual. In addition, averages of changes in blood pressure were analyzed by stratifying with changes in BMI over 10 years(from 2002); annual occurrence rates of high blood pressure, stratified per BMI, were further assessed in which patients were in normal ranges of blood pressure. As a result, the averages blood pressure over 10 years were more significantly elevating in the group of obesity compared to those of the low weight group as well as the normal weight group. Similarly, when it comes to the occurrence rates of high blood pressure, the group of higher BMI represented elevated risks compared to the groups of low BMI. In conclusion, the increase of BMI over 10 years(2002-20012) were significantly influenced on the increase of blood pressure.

Proposal of Design Criteria on Multi-functional Tunnel for the Urban Traffic Tunnel to Flooding Bypass (도심지 홍수저감과 교통량 분담을 위한 다기능 대심도 터널 설계 기준 방안 제시)

  • Spatial and time variation of the precipitation in Korea is high, therefore, more than 2/3 of the annual precipitation is concentrated during the rainy season. Climate change also causes the intensive rainfall in the area of dense population, thus the occurrence frequency of the heavy flood in the impervious area has been increased. Therefore, the structural food mitigation measures such as the construction of the higher design frequency stormwater pipes, pumping stations, and/or detention ponds. The flood bypass tunnel or retention storage is also one of the efficient structures to mitigate flood damage in the urban area. However, the economic feasibility has been controversial because the flood bypass tunnel might be used once or twice a year. To solve the problem, the multi-functional tunnel for the urban traffic and flooding bypass has been considered. In this study, the design criteria of the road and water tunnel has been analysed and the composite design criteria is proposed for the multi-functional tunnel which is expected to be constructed.

Assessment of CMIP5 GCMs for future extreme drought analysis (미래 극한 가뭄 전망을 위한 CMIP5 GCMs 평가)

  • In this study, CMIP5 GCMs rainfall data (2011~2099) based on RCP scenarios were used to analyze the extreme drought evaluation for the future period. For prospective drought assessment, historical observations were used based on the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) data (1976~2010) of the Korea Meteorological Administration. Through the analysis of various indicators, such as average annual rainfall, rainy days, drought spell, and average drought severity was carried out for the drought evaluation of the five major river basins (Han river, Nakdong river, Geum river, Sumjin river, and Youngsan river) over the Korean peninsula. The GCMs that predicted the most severe future droughts are CMCC-CMS, IPSL-CM5A-LR and IPSL-CM5A-MR. Moderate future droughts were predicted from HadGEM2-CC, CMCC-CM and HadGEM2-ES. GCMs with relatively weak future drought forecasts were selected as CESM1-CAM5, MIROC-ESM-CHEM and CanESM2. The results of this study might be used as a fundamental data to choose a reasonable climate change scenario in future extreme drought evaluation.

Estimation of Watershed Parameters and Runoff Computation Using GIS (GIS를 이용한 유역매개변수의 추정 및 유출량 산정)

  • There exist various difficulties in runoff analysis due to many ungauged basins in Korea and the runoff phenomena is also more and more complicated by the change of geologic characteristics due to the urbanization. So, we use GIS technique which is widely used in hydrologic field and cell runoff concept for the fast and effective runoff simulation. This study uses the observations of 6 stage stations in Wi-Cheon watershed and simulates the watershed parameters by using WMS model. We construct DEM by the grids which are consisted based on the criteria of minimum area according to land use. The cell runoff is estimated by an average weighted method using mean annual streamflow and mean maximum daily streamflow obtained from six stage stations. The runoff ratio at arbitrary site is estimated by conducting the direction analysis of streamflow and by removing sinkhole. We compare the simulated and observed runoffs and know that the simulated runoff shows the valid results. So, we could use the geographical information and cell runoff concept for more fast and effective runoff simulation studies.

Phonology and Morphometrics Change of Zostera marina L. Population at Duksan Port in the Eastern Coast of Korea (동해 덕산항에 생육하는 거머리말(Zostera marina L.) 개체군의 생물계절학과 형태 변이)

  • From March 1998 to August 2000, the phenological and morphometric changes of Zostera marina L. were examined at the Duksan Port in the eastern coast of Korea. Morphometric characteristics, phenological stage, shoot density, biomass of Z. marina population and environmental parameters were also measured. Nutrient levels in water column varied over the season. Morphometric characteristics of vegetative shoot changed with season; shoot heights ranged from 54.2 cm (March) to 100.0 cm (October). Reproductive shoots appeared from mid-March to early September of which the height was ranged from 97.8 cm (March) to 213.0 cm (July). The flowering phase started at 12$^{\circ}C$ and the fruit development was resulted up to 21$^{\circ}C$. The seed maturing was developed at 22$^{\circ}C$-$25^{\circ}C$. Shoot density and biomass in permanent quadrate (0.25 m$^2$) were significantly different among seasons ranging from 38 to 136 shoots (mean 80.3$\pm$6.5) for shoot density, and 190 g dry wt m$^{-2}$ in October 1998 to 922 g dry wt m$^{-2}$ in June 1998 for biomass respectively. Relationships between shoot morphometrics and physico-chemical parameters were not significantly correlated. Seasonal changes in water temperature seemed responsible for the replacement of reproductive phases and the annual changes of shoot morphometrics in Z. marina populations.

Reproductive Cycle of Surf Clam (Tresus keenae) in Southern Coast of Korea (남해안에 서식하는 왕우럭 (Tresus keenae)의 생식주기)

  • Gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, condition factor, and meat weight rate of the surf clam, Tresus Keenae were studied by histological observations and morphometric data based on the samples which have been collected from the south coast of Korea, from January 1995 to February 1996. The annual ranges of the mean seawater temperature and specific gravity in habitat of the surf clam were $4.9\~24.9^{\circ}C$ and 1.0210$\~$1.0266, respectively. Monthly changes in the condition factor showed in a wide range from 0.2381 to 0.2827, began to increase in January and reached the first maximum (0.2827) in April. And then the value rapidly decreased in June, thereafter, reached the second peak (0.2812) in August. The condition factor of this species showed the two peaks, and gonadal development reached sexually mature and ripe conditions during the period of these two peaks. The meat weight rate ranged from $38.0\%$ to $46.4\%$, and its change showed a similar tendency with the condition factor. The reproductive cycle of this species can be divided into five successive stages: in both sex, multiplicative (December to January, July to August), growing (January to February, September to October), mature (February to April, September to November), spawning (April to June, September to November), and degenerative and resting stage (May to July, November to January).

Understanding of Structural Changes of Keyword Networks in the Computer Engineering Field (컴퓨터공학 분야 키워드네트워크의 구조적 변화 이해)

  • Recently, there have been many trials to analyze characteristics of research trends through a structural analysis of keyword networks in various fields. However, most previous studies have mainly focused on structural analysis harbored in some static networks and there is a lack of research on changes of such networks structure with time. In this paper, we constructed annual keyword networks by using a database of papers published in the international computer engineering-field journals from 2002 through 2011, and examined the changes of them. As a result, it was shown that most keywords in a network are preserved in the network of the next year, and their degree of connectivity and the average weight of the connections were higher and smaller, respectively, than those of the keywords which are not preserved. In addition, when a keyword network shifted to one of the next year, the connections between keywords were more likely to be removed than preserved, and the average weight of the removal connections was higher than that of the preserved ones. These results imply that the keywords are not changed over time but their connections are very likely to be changed; and there is apparent differences between the preserved and removal groups of keywords/connections with respect to degree and weights of connections. All these results are consistently observed over the ten-year datasets and they can be important principles in understanding the structural changes of the keyword networks.

Change of Aboveground Carbon Storage in a Pinus rigida Stand in Gwangnung, Gyunggi-do, Korea (경기도(京畿道) 광릉(光陵) 리기다소나무임분(林分)의 지상부(地上部) 탄소저장량(炭素貯藏量) 변화(變化))

  • Aboveground carbon storage and increment of a 31-year-old pitch pine (Pinus rigida) stand were measured for five years (1997~2001) in the Jungbu Forest Experiment Station, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. The carbon concentration in each component of aboveground and soil depth decreased in the order of needle>branch>stembark>stemwood>forest floor>0-15cm soil depth>15-30cm soil depth. The carbon storage except for root carbon was 140,600kgC/ha and the tree accounted for 61%, soil 31% and forest floor 8% of the stand carbon storage. Due to high tree mortality by Fusarium subglutinans infection and spring drought in 2001, carbon increment except for 2001 data was 3,233kgC/ha/yr and was in the order of stemwood>branch>stembark>needle. Carbon storage and increment were attributed to stand density and site quality. Carbon storage and increment were higher in the high site quality than in the lower site quality plot on similar tree density. Also, the high tree density site on similar site quality showed more carbon storage and increment compared with the lower tree density. The results suggest that site quality and tree density are a key factor determining carbon storage and increment in this pitch pine stand.
