  • In order to fabricate porous materials having an anisotropic thermal conductivity by aligning plate-shaped pores structure, alumina powder (AM-21, mean particle size $4\mum$) and flake crystalline graphite was used. The aligned pore structure was realized using multi-pressing process. Degree of pore orientation increased with the number of pressing and thermal conductivity, parallel to the pressing direction, decreased with the number of pressing. Thermal conductivity decreased significantly to the addition of 30vol% crystalline graphite, however, in the case of 60vol%, thermal conductivity did not decrease significantly due to the breakage of crystalline graphite. An anisotropy of the thermal conductivity increased with the content of crystalline graphite up to 30vol%. Graded pore structure was fabricated by controlling the content and size of crystalline graphite, which provides, possibly, the enhancement in mechanical strength and thermal insulation properties of the insulating bricks.

  • We study lattice thermal conductivity of $Sb_2Te_3$ using molecular dynamics simulations. The interatomic potentials are fitted to reproduce total energy and elastic constants, and phonon properties calculated using the potentials are in reasonable agreement with first-principles calculations and experimental data. Our calculated lattice thermal conductivities of $Sb_2Te_3$ decrease with temperature from 150 K to 500 K. The in-plane lattice thermal conductivity of $Sb_2Te_3$ is higher than cross-plane lattice thermal conductivity of $Sb_2Te_3$, as in the case of $Bi_2Te_3$, which is consistent with the anisotropy of the elastic constants.

  • Helium cooled solid breeder blanket as an important blanket candidate of the Tokamak fusion reactor uses ceramic pebble bed for tritium breeding. Considering the poor effective thermal conductivity of the ceramic breeder pebble bed, thin structure of tritium breeder pebble bed is usually adopted in the blanket design. The container wall has a great influence on the thin pebble bed packing structure, especially for the assembly of mono-sized particles, and thin pebble bed will appear anisotropic effective thermal conductivity phenomenon. In this paper, thin ceramic pebble beds composed of 1 mm diameter Li4SiO4 particles are generated by the EDEM 2.7. The effective thermal conductivity of different thickness pebble beds in the three-dimensional directions are analyzed by three-dimensional thermal network method. It is observed that thin Li4SiO4 pebble bed showing anisotropic effective thermal conductivity under the practical design size. Normally, the effective thermal conductivity along the bed vertical direction is higher than the horizontal direction due to the gravity effect. As the thickness increases from 10 mm to 40 mm, the effective thermal conductivity of the pebble bed gradually increases.

  • Porous alumina ceramics with aligned plate-shaped pores were fabricated by using thermoplastic microsphere in order to show the anisotropy in thermal conductivity. The mixed powder of alumina and microsphere was pressed under 15 MPa till 20$0^{\circ}C$ to deform polymer into platelet-shape and sintered at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The sintered specimen with 10 wt% microsphere has 45.3% porosity and the bending strength of 44 MPa. The microstructural investigation confirmed the pore structure of platelet-shape, the thermal conductivities for vertical and parallel directions are 3.803 W/mK and 7.818 W/mK, respectively, the ratio between two directions exceeds 2.

  • Tailoring the microstructure and the composition of silicon nitride ceramics can have profound effects on their properties. Here it is shown that the grain growth behavior, in particular its anisotropy, is a function of the specific additives, which allow one to tune the microstructure from one consisting of more equiaxed grains to one with very elongated grains. Recent studies are discussed that provide an understanding of the atomic level processes by which these additives influence grain shapes. Next the microstructural (and compositional) parameters are discussed that can be used to modify the thermal conductivity, as well as fracture toughness of silicon nitride ceramics. As a result of the open <0001> channels in $\beta-Si_3N_4$, the c-axis conductivity can be exceptionally high. Thus, the formation of elongated c-axis grains, particularly when aligned can result in conductivity values approaching those of AlN ceramics. In addition, the controlled formation of elongated grains can also be used to significantly enhance the fracture toughness. At the same time, both properties are shown to be affected by the composition of the densification additives. Utilizing such understanding, one will be able to tailor the ceramics to achieve the properties desired for specific applications.

  • Vermiculite-silica composites with a layered structure were fabricated by adding cellulose fibers as a pore former and by a simple uniaxial pressing and subsequent sintering process. Three different combinations of additives were used and their effects on the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of the composites were investigated. Both compressive strengths (42-128 MPa) and thermal conductivities (0.75-1.48 $W/m{\cdot}K$) in the direction perpendicular to the pressing direction (T) were higher than those (19-81 MPa and 0.32-1.04 $W/m{\cdot}K$) in the direction parallel to the pressing direction (S) in all samples. The anisotropy in both properties was attributed to the microstructural anisotropy, which was caused by the layered structure developed in the composites.

  • Thermal problems that are directly related to the lifetime of an electronic device are becoming increasingly important owing to the miniaturization of electronic devices. To solve thermal problems, it is essential to study thermal stability through thermal diffusion and insulation. A honeycomb sandwich plate has anisotropic thermal conductivity. To analyze the thermal deformation and temperature distribution of a system that employs a honeycomb sandwich plate, the thermal and elastic properties need to be determined. In this study, the thermal and elastic properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate, such as thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and shear modulus, are predicted. The properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate vary according to the hexagon size, thickness, and material properties.

  • With the development of modern microelectronics technologies, the power density of electronic devices is rapidly increasing, due to the miniaturization or integration of device elements which operate at high frequency, high power conditions. Resulting thermal problems are known to cause power leakage, device failure and deteriorated performance. To relieve heat accumulation at the interface between chips and heat sinks, thermal interface materials (TIMs) must provide efficient heat transport in the through-plane direction. We report on the enhanced thermal conduction of $Al_2O_3-based$ polymer composites, fabricated by the surface wetting and texturing of thermally conductive hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) nanoplatelets with large anisotropy in morphology and physical properties. The thermally conductive polymer composites were prepared with hybrid fillers of $Al_2O_3$ macro beads and surface modified h-BN nanoplatelets. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has high thermal conductivity and is one of the most suitable materials for thermally conductive polymer composites, which protect electronic devices by efficient heat dissipation. In this study, we synthesized hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles by the pyrolysis of cost effective precursors, boric acid and melamine. Through pyrolysis at $900^{\circ}C$ and subsequent annealing at $1500^{\circ}C$, hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles with diameters of ca. 50nm were synthesized. We demonstrate that the addition of a small amount of calcium fluoride ($CaF_2$) during the preparation of the melamine borate adduct significantly enhanced the crystallinity of the h-BN and assisted the growth of nanoplatelets up to 100nm in diameters. The addition of a small amount of h-BN enhanced the thermal conductivity of the $Al_2O_3-based$ polymer composites, from 1.45W/mK to 2.33 W/mK.

  • The effects of geologic structures such as rock joins and bedding planes on the thermal conductivity of a discontinuous rock mass are studied. The expressions for the equivalent thermal conductivities of jointed rock masses are derived and found to be anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy depends primarily on the thermal properties contrast between the joint phase and surrounding intact rock, the joint density expressed as volume fraction and the inclination angle of the joint. Within the context of 2-dimensional finite element heat transfer scheme, the isotherms around a circular hole are analyzed for both the isotropic and anisotropic rock masses in 3 different thermal boundary conditions. i.e. temperature, heat flux and convection boundary conditions. The temperature in the stratified anisotripic rock mass is greatly influenced by the thermal properties of the rock formation in contact with the heat source. Using the excavation-temperature coupled elastic plastic finite element method, analyzed is the thermo-mechanical stability of a circular opening subjected to 10$0^{\circ}C$ at a depth of 527m. It is found that the thermal stress concentration was enough to deteriorate the stability and form a plastic yield zone around the opening, in contrast to the safety factor greater than 2 resulted form the excavation-only analysis.

  • It is well known that the position and the shape of the S/L interface affect the qualities of the single crystal in the growth process. Thus the information of the temperature profile in the growth system is very important. In this study, we developed the program to predict the temperature profile from the setting values of the heating blocks in VGF(vertical gradient freezing) single crystal growth system. With this program, we studied the effects of the materials and the sizes of support rod, the materials of the crucible on the S/L interface shape. The larger radius and/or smaller thermal diffusivity support rod was, the flatter the S/L interface was. When the thermal conductivity of crucible was isotropic, the S/L interface was more concave downward to the solid phase in proportional to the increase of thermal diffusivity of the crucible. By the comparison of the S/L interface shape between PBN crucible and quartz crucible for the same condition, the effect of anisotropy of thermal conductivity of crucible showed different trends with respect to the position of the S/L interface.
