  • The calibration method of the initial value error obtained in the weight measurement through anchor bolt type strain gauge sensor is proposed. The strain gauge sensor is developed for preventing the overturning of forklift, which is the most frequent type of safety-accident in industry. It was confirmed that the initial value error is caused from the physical and mechanical error of anchor bolt, and the environmental problem. Since the elimination of these causes falls outside the realm of this research, we find out the calibrated values based on all the causes, and we adjust the initial values of analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) module consisted of strain gauge sensor block using the calibrated values. We use the linear interpolation method for our calibration. We confirm that four sensor modules have the different under 5% between the real weight and the measured value in the experiment applied with the calibration of initial values. The low correlation between the real weights and ADC values is also improved through the proposed calibration.

  • Numerical analysis is carried out to identify the appropriateness of the design codes that is available for the tensile design of fastening system at Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in this study. This study is intended for the cast-in-place anchor that is widely used for the fastening of equipment in Korean NPPs. The microplane model and the elastic-perfectly plastic model are employed for the quasi-brittle material like concrete and for the ductile material like anchor bolt as constitutive model for numerical analysis and smeared crack model is employed for the crack and damage phenomena. The developed numerical model is verified on a basis of the various test data of cast-in-place anchor. The appropriateness of both ACI 349 Code and CCD approach of CEB-FIP Code is evaluated for the tensile design of cast-in-place anchor and it is proved that both design codes give a conservative results compared with real tensile capacity of cast-in-place anchor.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in expanded sidewalks for existing bridges. The cantilever beam system applied to expanded sidewalks for existing bridges are connected with the concrete structure by adhesive anchor bolts. However, the extended sidewalks are currently constructed without standardized regulations, which lead to excessive design of the beam spacing and installation and the construction difficulties due to the excessive over-weight. Moreover, there is only limited analysis and experiment data on the post-installed adhesive anchor bolts, so the excessive number of bolts is used for the connection. This paper deals with a method to increase the effectiveness of beam sections and anchor bolts geometry for expanded sidewalk of existing bridge. The study results showed that the failure of cantilever beam connected by adhesive anchor bolts was dominated by bond failure of interface between concrete and bolt. Also, the results indicated the possibilities of improving serviceability as well as safety of the sidewalks by changing of beam section and prestressing the bolts.

  • The Emergency Diesel Generator(EDG) is a very important piece of equipment for the safety of a Nuclear Power Plant(NPP). In this study, the operating vibration or three kinds or EDG system was measured. The target EDG systems art Yonggwang 5 unit, Ulchin 2 unit and Ulchin 3 unit. The Yonggwang 5 and Ulchin 3 unit EDG system is the same type but the foundation systems are different. One is an anchor bolt type and the other is a spring and viscous-damper type. The purpose of this measurement is for a verification of the vibration isolation effect according to the foundation system. As a result. it can he said that the spring and viscous damper system of the EDG performed well for the vibration isolation.

  • Prying action caused by the eccentric loads within the equipment itself and the anchors can result in a lack of adequate stiffness and strength within the equipment and in additional moment loadings on the anchors. A typical case of prying action often found in power plants is the angle type anchorage system with expansion bolt. Experimental and analytical studies were performed to investigate the relationship between the amplification factors and various geometrical and material factors. It is revealed that the value of the factor is effected by the stiffness of bolt and angle, lateral stiffness of cabinet, and geometrical parameter of anchor system.

  • To secure the stability of geotechnical infrastructures and minimize failures during the construction process, a number of support systems have been introduced in the last several decades. In particular, stabilization methods using steel bars have been widely used in the field of geotechnical engineering. Rock bolt system is representative support system using steel bars. Pre-stressing has been applied to enhance reinforcement performance but can be released because of the failure of head or anchor sections. To overcome this deficiency, this paper proposes an innovative support system that can actively reinforce the weak ground along the whole structural element by introducing an active tension bolt containing a spring unit to the middle of the steel bar to increase its reinforcement capacity. In addition, the paper presents the support mechanism of the active tension bolt based on a theoretical study and employs an experimental study to validate the performance of the proposed active tension bolt based on a down-scaled model. To examine the feasibility of the active tension unit in a pillar, the paper considers a pullout test and a small-scale experimental model. The experimental results suggest the active tension bolt to be an effective support system for pillar reinforcement.

  • To make large slopes or rock structures stable, supporting systems, such as anchor bolt, rock bolt and spiral bolt which are developed recently, are commonly used. In this study, in-situ pull-out tests were carried out to compare the characteristics of rock bolt that is most widely used with ones of spiral bolt that is newly developed. Re-pull-out test for the spiral bolt in which loading and unloading cycles are repeated three times showed that the maximum pull-out load is almost constant irrespective of the number of loading cycles, which may be due to no failure between spiral bolt and filler. On the other hand, the maximum pull-out load for the conventional rock bolt decreases with the number of loading cycles due to the partial failure between rock bolt and filler.
