  • The purpose of this study is to find out how energy substrate's utilizations in the maximal exercise-cardiorespiratory function and the energy metabolic variation- have the effect on before and after the supplements of coenzyme Q10(100mg per day for 8 weeks) based on the male students(CoQ10=8, placebo=8) of high school. The results of this study are as follows: Maximal oxygen uptake and maximal oxygen per weight are found to have the significant increase respectively in supplement group. Glucose is found to have the significant decrease after the supplement of CoQ10. And then FFA is found to have the significant increase. In the above results, the supplements of CoQ10 and cardiorespiratory function in the maximal exercise are found to have the improvement. CoQ10 in the anaerobic exercise spares the energy's utilization of Glucose and then is found to have the increase of the utilization of FFA. CoQ10 in the aerobic exercise is reported to have the increase of the utilization of FFA and then CoQ10 in the maximal exercise is also recognized to have the increase of the utilization of FFA, or energy substrates.

  • Management of nutrient intakes through behavior-mordification can be important for improving exercise performance in athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nutritional counseling for improving exercise performance capability in athletes. The subjects were seven golfers and fourteen ju-do athletes from Hoseo university, and they have nor received professional hel[ from dieticians. Prior to nutritional counseling, their dietary intakes, lifestyles and dietary habits were evaluated. Nutritional counseling sessions were conducted by a trained dietician every 2-3 weeks for 3-4 month. After 5 counseling sessions, nutrient intakes, lifestyle and dietary habits were re-evaluated. Exercise performance capability was measured by maximal exercise stress test using treadmills. Individual data were assessed as quality index represents the better nutritional status. The common dietary and lifestyle problems were overeating binging, overeating, snacking and drinking alcohol prior to the nutritional counseling. After counseling sessions, the quality index of dietary habits seemed to decrease, especially in ju-do athletes, representing nutritional problems were resolved. Body fat and body mass index decreased in ju-do athletes, but not in golfers. Both athletes have shown to increase oxygen uptake at anaerobic threshold and maximal oxygen uptake status, which represents that the athletic performance capacity was improved after counseling sessions. Their respiratory quotients were decreased. In conclusion, nutritional counseling sessions over five times are an effective and efficient approach to change dietary habits to improve exercise performance capacity. Furthermore, clients can have good dietary habits and learn how to manago muscle strength by behavior modification through multiple nutritional counseling sessions. • The effect of compression wear for sport performance and muscle function was investigated based on the physiological test and electromyograph(EMG). The EMG test was used to study muscle activity after fitting the compression wear during exercise. It showed slight difference between men and women testee groups in the results of anaerobic, aerobic, fatigue, and EMG test due to muscle content in the body. In addition, the exercise performance was increased to some extent even the muscle activity was decreased. It is estimated that the compression effect to muscle by the compression wear decreased the muscle vibration and improved blood circulation which helped the entire sport performance. However, it is necessary to study the effect of compression wear in long-term wearing in the future study.

  • To investigate the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and/or exercise on body fat mass and weight, college women of normal weight (2130%) were recruited for this study. The participants were divided into 4 groups: placebo-no exercise, placebo-exercise, CLA-no exercise, and CLA-exercise groups. Three grams of either a placebo (corn oil) or CLA were taken every day for 12 weeks, and the exercise groups performed 80 minutes of aerobic and anaerobic exercise three times a week for 12 weeks. There were no differences in nutrient intakes among the groups. The CLA-exercise group had significantly lower body weight, BMI and body fat mass compared to the placebo-no exercise group. In addition, the HDL-cholesterol levels of subjects in the CLA-no exercise and CLA-exercise groups significantly increased compared to those in the placebo-no exercise group. These results suggest that a combination of CLA supplementation with exercise could efficiently reduce body fat mass and body weight compared to CLA supplementation or exercise alone.

  • This study selected 42 domestic preceded literatures that applied exercise programs to the elderly for the past 10 years from 2010 to the first half of 2020 to analyze the characteristics of preceded research, applied period of exercise programs, configuration of exercise programs, and effectiveness of exercise programs on elderly depression, and the conclusion is as follows. First, the majority of the subjects were female and male/female elderly people in the preceding literature, and it appeared that there were no male subjects alone for any of the studies showed. The majority of the ages were over 65 years old, and the number of subjects was 50 or less. In the group, preceded research with exercise/control groups was mostly predominant, and the participated institutions and regions accounted for the majority of the residential area/public institutions and sanatorium. Second, the period of the exercise program was mostly applied for more than 12 weeks, and the frequency of exercise per week was 1-2 times and 3-4 times. Most of the preceding literature was applied with a 60-minute exercise program during the one-time exercise period. Third, most of the contents of the exercise program consisted of a aerobic exercise alone and combination of aerobic·anaerobic exercise. Fourth, it was confirmed that the effects of exercise programs were effective in physical fitness factors as well as in depression and cognitive function.

  • Objective : Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in patients with heart and lung problems is used to assess functional capacity, evaluate responses to medical treatment, plan for exercise therapy, assess progression of disease process, and determine prognosis. Particularly in the patients with lung cancer, the exercise pulmonary function test gives significant physiologic assessment of the lung resection candidate. Common exercise modalities are running and cycling. Until now, the comparison of two tests mainly has been done in normal person and patients with cardiac diseases. This study is designed to compare the treadmill and bicycle exercise pulmonary function test in patients with respiratory diseases. Methods : Twenty one patients underwent a progressively incremental exercise test to the symptom-limited stage with the treadmill (Vmax29 Sensor Medics, USA) and the bicycle(model No. 2,900 Sensor Medics, USA) with 7 days apart between the two tests. Measurements were made of the metabolic, cardiorespiratory parameters, blood gases, and symptoms. Results : The results of the treadmill exercise showed significant elevation in the $VO_2$max, VEmax, and anaerobic threshold compared to those of bicycle exercise. In contrast, the results of the breathing and heart rate reserve showed the reverse. Conclusion : These results suggest that the type of exercise should be taken into consideration when interpreting exercise test in patients with respiratory diseases.

  • Maximal cardiac output and oxygen uptake $(VO_{2max})$ were measured during treadmill exercise for seven top-class marathoners and nine non-athletes using impedance cardiograph developed by one of the authors (DW Kim). Results of this study are summarized as belows. 1) New shoes with sponge and silicon rubber attached to the soles were developed to reduce motion artifact during treadmill exercise. Ensemble everaging techneque with the developed shoes was also used to improve the measurement of stroke volume using impedance cardiography. 2) Maximal cardiac output of the athletes, 14.98 L/min, was significantly higher than that of the non-athletes, 13.46 L/min. As maximal heart rate of the marathoners is lower than that of non-athletes, stroke volume of the former is significantly larger than that of the latter. 3) $VO_{2max}$ of the marathoners, 59.38 ml/kg/min, was higher than that of the non-athletes, 40.22 ml/kg/min. At the anaerobic threshold. $VO_{2max}$ of the former was 62.3% of $VO_{2max}$ and this was significantly higher than that of the non-athletes, 57.2%, This results indicates that the marathoners have higher aerobic capacity than the non-athletes. 4) The marathoners showed larger $VO_2$ than the non-athletes at the same cardiac output, indicating that a-v $O_2$ of the former is higher than that of the latter. 5) Maximal systolic pressure of the marathoners was higher than that of the non-athletes, and so was maximal rate-pressure products. These results indicate that heart oxygen consumption rate $(hVO_2)$ of the marathoner is higher than that of the non-athletes is mainly due to higher stroke volume. And higher oxygen consumption of the marathoners is due to higher stroke volume. And higher oxygen consumption of the marathoners is due to their larger a-v $O_2$. The marathoners show both higher threshold and $VO_{2max}$. Especially, measurement of cardiac output during treadmill exercise by improved impedance cardiography is expected to contribute in study of cardiac function of athletes.
