  • 1. Kum Nam Poong which is highly susceptible to bacterial leaf blight was used as the host plant throughout this experiment. Xanthomonas oryzae 6526 was inoculated on the top of upper leaves by single needle inoculation method. After 14 days, the enlarged spots were examined in the experimental pots. Each of 3 levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium pots were arranged at random with three replications. 2. The amounts of nitrogen fertilizer applied and the lesion development of bacterial leaf blight were positively correlated regardless of application of phosphate and potassium fertilizers. 3. The effect of phosphate fertilizer on the lesion development was not significantly different from standard level. The lesion development was stimulated when the amount of phosphate fertilizer was increased as twice as standard level. 4. The inhibitory effect of potassium fertilizer on leaf blight was maximum by applying standard level. The stimulative effect of potassium fertilizer on the lesion development, however, was noticed. when potassium fertilizer applied was increased as twice as the standard level. 5. The heading date and spike number of rice plant were significantly correlated with the lesion development, and such phenomena were depended on the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied regardless of the other fertilizers applied in this experiment.

  • Long term cultivation crops like tomato, capsicum, melon etc. demand much amount of continuous supplying of nutrition during the whole growing periods. It is not easy to cover satisfactorily the nutritional demands for them by splitted top dressings, slow release fertilizer applications and fertigation systems. To overcome these problems, the "CULTAN" (Controlled Uptake Long Term Ammonium Nutrition) Beaker Deposit techniques have been developed and it was put into PVC beaker with the combined nitrogen fertilizer type mixed with the ratio of one-third of ammonium sulfate-N and two-thirds of urea-N, in which nitrogen was loaded on the demanding amount of a tomato plant during the growing period. Gypsum was mixed as a binder, and loamy soil and compost were used as a diffusion regulator. It was placed upside down into root zone of tomato at the transplanting. Tomato roots were spreaded into the Deposit beaker by ammonium ions which attract root growth. The tomato fruit yield and nitrogen uptake by plant were increased by application of $NH_4$-Beaker deposit fertilizer rather than those of common fertilizer treatment. In conclusion, it was able to improve economic and ecological benefits through CULTAN system compared with common fertilization systems. CULTAN system was estimated as a prospective alternative to enhance productivity and minimize nutrient lose. In addition, it shows further developing possibility of CULTAN system by the supplement of micro-nutrients and pesticides in the macro-nutrient beaker deposits.

  • Nepal is one of the least urbanized countries in the world where more than 80% of the total population live in rural areas. In recent years, the rate of urbanization became rampant which ultimately accelerated immense pressure on municipal services, especially on managing the ever increasing amount of wastes. Due to lack of technology, infrastructure and financial capacity management of increasing amount of solid waste has become a major challenge in municipalities of Nepal. The indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes already affected the urban environment by creating a serious occupational health and environmental hazard to the vicinity of the dumping sites. However, there is great possibility of recovering methane from the landfill sites since the typical Nepalese municipal solid waste contains more than 65% of organic wastes. Despite having enormous potential of generating electricity from hydropower, Nepal is facing acute shortage of energy. Therefore, comprehensive scientific research and development is necessary for making solid waste to environmentally friendly by converting waste to the energy.

  • Field cultivation of corn and microbial cell viability tests using Pseudomonas putida K-5 were performed to assess the toxic effect of kelp seaweed biochar (KBC) and fir wood biochar (FBC) produced by pyrolysis. After 63 days growth, FBC increased corn growth by 4.9% without fertilizer and by 7.6% with fertilizer, while KBC decreased it by 20.2% without fertilizer and by 27.9% with fertilizer. Physico-chemical characterization of the biochars such as ICP, CHON, and proximate analyses showed that KBC contained large amount of metals and ashes which could be responsible for its inhibition to corn growth. Upon exposure of K-5 cells for 1 h to biochar extracts, the cell viability in KBC extracts was 48.2% and quite lower than that (78.6%) in FBC. Washed KBC biochar with water at 1:10 w/v % increased the cell viability to 54.0%. The results indicated that seaweed biochar may be careful to be used for plant growing additives due to its high concentrations of metals and ashes. This toxic effect could be reduced by proper washing method with water.

  • 1. In this experiment, the effect of the fertilizer of which the chief ingredients are the silicate, the manganeize and the iron, was examined by applying to the rice variety Norm #6, in three different vote as 377 gr, 754 gr and 1131 gr per 0.22 a. 2. In the rearing of the rice plant, the effects of the fertilizer was not so significant in the plant height or division. 3. The rice blast and the leaf spot was decreased by appling this fertiliger and the lager dose, the less significantly. 4. The fruiting-rate, yield, and the perfect unpolished-rice weight were increased by appling this fertilizer, and the whole unpolished rice weight and the perfect unpolished rice weight was inproportion to the amount of the fertilizer.

  • To utilize coastal aquaculture ground bottom sediment in which concentrations of harmful pollutants are low and organic content is high as an organic fertilizer alkaline stabilizers such as CaO, Oyster shell, Mg(OH)$_2$ were added to the bottom sediment organic additives of livestock or food wastes. Nutritive qualities of crude fertilizers were measured to examine effects of alkaline stabilizers and organic waste additions. The Mg(OH)$_2$-added crude fertilizer had significantly lower total carbon(T-C) and nitrogen(T-N) content, reflecting the dilution effect due to great amount of Mg(OH)$_2$ addition. However, the addition of oyster shell had no significant effect on the T-C and T-N content of the fertilizer. $P_2O_5$ and $K_2$O content was considerably higher in the mixed sample of aquaculture ground bottom sediments and livestock wastes than in the mixture of the sediments and food wastes, resulting from higher $P_2O_5$ and $K_2$O content in livestock wastes. Addition of Mg(OH)$_2$ increased the content of MgO In the crude fertilizer but significantly reduced the content of other nutritive elements such as $P_2O_5$, $K_2$O and CaO. Addition of oyster shell as an alkaline stabilizer seemed to have the advantage of saving time and expenses far dryness due to its role as a modulator of water content. Moreover, additions of effect Mg(OH)$_2$ decreased the concentrations of heavy metals in the fertilizer by the dilution while additions of oyster shell had no influence on heavy metal concentrations in the fertilizer.

  • There was a tendency that the growth inhibition of early growth due to herbicides was increased with increasing the amount of fertilizers. As a matter of fact, pretilachlor and pyrazolate increased the degree of injury with increasing the amount of fertilizers, and dimepiperate was actually safe regardless of the amount of fertilizer applied, while in case of bensulfuron, the injury become less when it was applied without fertilizers. As for organic matters, dimepiperate and pyrazolate were rather safe without organic matter, while pretilachlor and bensulfuron become really safe with the application of organic matter more than 1,000 kg/10a.
