A pilot production is made to the high carbon Cr-Ti alloy rail steels with slight quantity of Cr & Ti added to the eutectoid carbon steel. As a part of weldability of these alloy steels, SH-CCT diagram for welding is first applied to the high carbon Cr-ti alloy rail steel with 0.1wt% Ti. The microstructure, which will be appeared at the HAZ of Enclosed-arc welding of this alloy rail seel, is a single phase of pearlite. As a result of this, it shows that the welding condition of Enclosed-arc welding applied to this alloy rail steel is a good condition.

Pd-Ag alloy membranes have attracted a great deal of attention for their use in hydrogen purification and separation due to their high theoretical permeability, infinite selectivity and chemical compatibility with hydro-carbon containing gas streams. For commercial application, Pd-based membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need not only a high perm-selectivity but also a stable long-term durability. However, it has been difficult to fabricate thin, dense Pd-Ag alloy membranes on a porous stainless steel metal support with surface pores free and a stable diffusion barrier for preventing metallic diffusion from the porous stainless steel support. In this study, thin Pd-Ag alloy membranes were prepared by advanced Pd/Ag/Pd/Ag/Pd multi-layer sputter deposition on the modified porous stainless steel support using rough polishing/$ZrO_2$ powder filling and micro-polishing surface treatment, and following Ag up-filling heat treatment. Because the modified Pd-Ag alloy membranes using rough polishing/$ZrO_2$ powder filling method demonstrate high hydrogen permeability as well as diffusion barrier efficiency, it leads to the performance improvement in hydrogen perm-selectivity. Our membranes, therefore, are expected to be applicable to industrial fields for hydrogen purification and separation owing to enhanced functionality, durability and metal support/Pd alloy film integration.
This study reports the influence of gadolinium (Gd) addition on mechanical and corrosion properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel. In all alloys produced, regardless of the initial Gd content, Gd-based inclusions were well distributed in the duplex stainless steel matrix. As the Gd content increased from 0 wt% to 0.19 wt%, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness of the alloy increased from 630 MPa to 977 MPa and from 57 to 61, respectively, while elastic modulus, tensile elongation and impact energy of the alloy decreased. The critical crevice temperatures of Alloy1, Alloy2 and Alloy3 were $20^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively.

High-strength low-alloy steel is one of the widely used materials in onshore and offshore plant engineering. We investigated the alloying effect of solute atoms in α-Fe based alloy using ab initio calculations. Empirical equations were used to establish the effect of alloying on the Vicker's hardness, screw energy coefficient, and edge dislocation energy coefficient of the steel. Screw and edge energy coefficients were improved by the addition of V and Cr solute atoms. In addition, the addition of trace quantities of V, Cr, and Mn enhanced abrasion resistance. Solute atoms and contents with excellent mechanical properties were selected and their thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior were investigated. The addition of Cr atom is expected to form alloys with low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient. This study provides a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research in low-alloy steel and can be used to guide researchers to explore and develop α-Fe based alloys with improved properties, that can be fabricated in smart and cost-effective manners.

Dry-sliding-wear behavior of Fe-18Cr-l0Mn steel with various carbon and nitrogen contents was characterized, and the effect of carbon and nitrogen contents on the wear was investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at room temperature against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball using a pin-on-disk wear tester. Applied wear loads were varied from 10 N to 100 N, and the sliding distance was fixed as 720 m. Worn surfaces and the wear debris of the steel were examined using an SEM to find out the wear mechanism. It was found that the Fe-18Cr-10Mn with both carbon and nitrogen exhibited superior wear resistance to the steel with only nitrogen. The wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy increased with the increase of the carbon content. The excellent wear resistance of the Fe-18Cr-10Mn-xC-yN alloy was explained by the increased strain-hardening capability with the interstitial atoms.
The microstructure and the distribution of hardness of Co and A1 alloy powder cladding layer in high carbon 9CrSi alloy steel for roll materials cladded by laser surface cladding were investigated. And, for the evaluation of soundness as the roll materials, we examined the wear resistance of the cladding materials with the wear appratus of pin on disc type. The experimental results showed that the microstructure of laser cladding layer was constituted with the clad surface layer, the alloy layer, the heat treatment layer with base metal. The wear resistance of Ni alloy Powder cladding material was superior to that of Co alloy powder cladding material both at the low speed (0.46m/s) and the high speed(0.92m/s). It seemed that the behavior of wear showed the abrasive wear at the early stage and the adhesive wear at the late stage.
In NaCl solutions acidified with $H_2SO_4$, Fe20Cr1.1N alloy showed enhanced pitting corrosion resistance than Fe20Cr alloy. An XPS analysis revealed that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy contained higher cationfraction of Cr than that of Fe20Cr alloy, and nitrogen was incorporated into the film. In addition, it was found that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy was thinner and had higher oxygen vacancy density than that of Fe20Cr alloy. Based on these observations, it was concluded that the chemical composition was the determining factor for the protectiveness of the passive film of Fe20Cr based alloy in dilute $H_2SO_4$ solution.

The specific motivation for joining an Al alloy and Zn-coated steel arises from the need to save fuel consumption by weight reduction and to enhance the durability of vehicle structures in the automobile industry. In this study, the lap joining A6K31 Al alloy (top) and SGARC340 Zn-coated steel (bottom) sheets with a thickness of 1.0 mm and 0.8 mm, respectively, was carried out using the friction stir weld (FSW) technique. The probe of a tool did not contact the surface of the lower Zn-coated steel sheet. The friction stir welding was carried out at rotation speeds of 1500 rpm and travel speeds of 80~200 mm/min. The effects of tool geometry and welding speed on the mechanical properties and the structure of a joint were investigated. The tensile properties for the joints welded with a larger tool were better than those for the joints done with a smaller tool. A good correlation between the tensile load and area of the welded region were observed. The bond strength using a larger tool (M4 and M3) decreased with an increase in welding speed. Most fractures occurred along the interface between the Zn-coated steel and the Al alloy. However, in certain conditions with a lower welding speed, fractures occurred at the A6K31 Al alloy.

Higher strength and fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel steels can be obtained by changing the material specification from that of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel (SA508 Gr.3) to Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel (SA508 Gr.4N). However, the operation temperature of the reactor pressure vessel is more than $300^{\circ}C$ and the reactor operates for over 40 years. Therefore, we need to have phase stability in the high temperature range in order to apply the SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel for a reactor pressure vessel. It is very important to evaluate the temper embrittlement phenomena of SA508 Gr.4N for an RPV application. In this study, we have performed a Charpy impact test and tensile test of SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel with changing impurity element contents such as Mn and P. And also, the mechanical properties of these low alloy steels after longterm heat treatment ($450^{\circ}C$, 2000hr) are evaluated. Further, evaluation of the temper embrittlement by fracture analysis was carried out. Temper embrittlement occurs in KL4-Ref and KL4-P, which show a decrease of the elongation and a shifting of the transition curve toward high temperature. The reason for the temper embrittlement is the grain boundary segregation of the impurity element P and the alloying element Ni. However, KL4-Ref shows temper embrittlement phenomena despite the same contents of P and Ni compared with SC-KL4. This result may be caused by the Mn contents. In addition, the behavior of embrittlement is not largely affected by the formation of $M_3P$ phosphide or the coarsening of Cr carbides.
Phosphorus is an element that plays many important roles in powder metallurgy as an alloy element. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of phosphorus addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of sintered low-alloy steel. The sintered low-alloy steels Fe-0.6%C-3.89%Ni-1.95%Cu-1.40%Mo-xP (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20%) were manufactured by compacting at 700 MPa, sintering in H2-N2 at 1260 ℃, rapid cooling, and low-temperature tempering in Ar at 160 ℃. The microstructure, pore, density, hardness, and transverse rupture strength (TRS) of the sintered low-alloy steels were evaluated. The hardness increased as the phosphorus content increased, whereas the density and TRS showed maximum values when the content of P was 0.05%. Based on microstructure observation, the phase of the microstructure changed from bainite to martensite as the content of phosphorus is increased. Hence, the most appropriate addition of phosphorus in this study was 0.05%.
