  • This paper introduces new ordering algorithms using the graph of data structure and forward/backward substitution of LU decomposition using recursive function. The performance of the algorithm is compared with Tinney's algorithm using 14 bus systems. Test results show that the new fill-in element of Jacobian matrix using the proposed ordering algorithm is same as that of Tinner scheme 3 and the forward/backward substitution can reduce the computation time

  • In the present study, a contact search and check algorithm for general tool surface described by triangular FE patch is proposed. To improve numerical stability, SEAM element using the linear Coons interpolation has been used. To check the proposed algorithm, both clover cup and L-shape cup deep drawing processes are calculated. The computed results shows that the proposed contact algorithm can be successfully applied for sheet metal forming processes with general shaped tools.

  • An optimization methodology for designing a dielectric-filled plasmonic slot waveguide is presented. The genetic algorithm combined with a rigorous analysis based on the finite element method is used to optimize a nano-scaled plasmonic slot waveguide to have high mode confinement and a long propagation length, for which the objective function is defined as a figure of merit combining both propagation parameters.

  • In general, the dynamic analysis with FEM(Finite Element Method) of large structures requires large computer memory space and long computational time. For the purpose of economical dynamic analysis of large structures, most of engineers want to use an efficient solution algorithm. This paper reports the modified CMS(Component Mode Synthesis) method which uses more efficient algorithm than the classical CMS method. In this paper, it is shown that Ritz vector sets can play the role of normal mode vector sets of substurctures in the CMS algorithm. The modified CMS method has good convergence performance compared with that of the classical CMS method.

  • An early step toward evaluating a predicted RNA secondary structure is to visualize the predicted structure in graphical form. This talk will present an algorithm for efficiently drawing RNA secondary structures. The algorithm represents the direction and space for a structural element using vector and vector space, and generates nearly overlap-free polygonal displays. The algorithm and a graphical user interface have been implemented in a working program called VizQFolder on IBM PC compatibles.

  • Presented in this paper is a CPO tool-path linking procedure optimizing technological objectives, such as dealing with islands (positive and negative) and minimizing tool retractions, drilling holes and slotting. Main features of the proposed algorithm are as follows; 1) a data structure, called a 'TPE-net', is devised to provide information on the parent/child relationships among the tool-path-elements, 2) the number of tool retractions is minimized by a 'tool-path-element linking algorithm'fading a tour through the TPE-net, and 3) the number of drilling holes is minimized by making use of the concept of the 'free space'.

  • A key element in the control of Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) is dispatching policy. This paper proposes a new dispatching algorithm for an efficient operation of AGVS. Based on an evolutionary operation, it has an adaptive control capability responding to changes of the system environment. The performance of the algorithm is compared with some well-known dispatching rules in terms of the system throughput through simulation. Sensitivity analysis is carried out varying the buffer capacity and the number of AGVS.

  • In this paper we consider multigrid algorithms for solving elasticity problems by using Wilson's nonconforming finite element method. We consider two types of intergrid transfer operators which is needed to define the multigrid algorithm and prove convergence of $\mathcal{W}$-cycle mutigrid algorithm and uniform condition number estimates for the variable $\mathcal{V}$-cycle multigrid preconditioner.

  • Structural damage detection (SDD) is a challenging task in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). As an exploring attempt to the SDD problem, a hybrid self-adaptive Firefly-Nelder-Mead (SA-FNM) algorithm is proposed for the SDD problem in this study. First of all, the basic principle of firefly algorithm (FA) is introduced. The Nelder-Mead (NM) algorithm is incorporated into FA for improving the local searching ability. A new strategy for exchanging the information in the firefly group is introduced into the SA-FNM for reducing the computation cost. A random walk strategy for the best firefly and a self-adaptive control strategy of three key parameters, such as light absorption, randomization parameter and critical distance, are proposed for preferably balancing the exploitation and exploration ability of the SA-FNM. The computing performance of the SA-FNM is evaluated and compared with the basic FA by three benchmark functions. Secondly, the SDD problem is mathematically converted into a constrained optimization problem, which is then hopefully solved by the SA-FNM algorithm. A multi-step method is proposed for finding the minimum fitness with a big probability. In order to assess the accuracy and the feasibility of the proposed method, a two-storey rigid frame structure without considering the finite element model (FEM) error and a steel beam with considering the model error are taken examples for numerical simulations. Finally, a series of experimental studies on damage detection of a steel beam with four damage patterns are performed in laboratory. The illustrated results show that the proposed method can accurately identify the structural damage. Some valuable conclusions are made and related issues are discussed as well.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of frictional contact problems in axisymmetric bodies using the rigid-plastic finite element method. A contact finite element method, based on a penalty function, are derived from variational formulations. The contact boundary condition between two deformable bodies is prescribed by the proposed algorithm. The program which can handle frictional contact problem is developed by using pre-existing rigid-plastic finite element code. Some examples used in this paper illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulations and algorithms. Efforts focus on the deformation patterns, contact force, and velocity gradient through the various simulations.
