This study was investigate to evaluate the phosphate uptake rate of green algae in relation to diurnal rhythm and algae control method. The phosphate uptake rates of Chlorella vulgaris and Ankistrodesmus convolutus increased in light period and decreased in dark period. On the contrary, those of Chlamydomonas sp. showed a peak in the late dark period. The differences among species in phosphate uptake in relation to diurnal rhythm were due to the severe competition among species and seemed to alleviate the competition for nutrient supplies. The compound of CellCaSi, Ca and Fe showed the effective removal of the phosphorus. The extracts from rice and barley straw exhibited a significant effect on the growth inhibition of Microcystis aeruginosa.

The growth inhibition effects of M. aeruginosa were verified using large volume (7.2 L) of algae samples and ultrasonication (high frequency of 1.6 MHz vs. low frequency of 23 kHz) in lab-scale experiment. The chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and cell number decreased gradually after 6 hr sonication with high frequency of 1.6 MHz whereas both decreased sharply after 6 hr sonication with low frequency of 23 kHz. Additionally, the first order degradation coefficient (k) values after sonication were greater than those during sonication. These results indicate that relatively low sonication energy per volume may affect the cell membrane and internal organs of M. aeruginosa in a slow and retarded manner and resulted in gradual decrease of cell numbers of M. aeruginosa. Based on the comparison of chl-a and cell number of M. aeruginosa after sonication, low frequency of 23 kHz is superior for growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa, since low frequency of 23 kHz easily penetrates the cell membrane and ruptures the internal organs including gas vesicles. As is evident in SEM and TEM images, ruptured cell membranes were clearly observed for low frequency of 23 kHz. Finally, the microcystin-LR in water is not detected and considered to be harmless in aquaculture systems.
Algal Growth-inhibition tests were conducted with 6 pesticides butachlor GR (5%), butachlor EW (33%), isoprothiolane GR (12%), isoprothiolane EC (40%), diazinon GR (3%) and diazinon EC (34%) to determine their comparative toxicity to three species of freshwater green algae Selenastrum capricornutum, Scenedesmus subspicatus, Chlorella vulgris and one species diatom Nitzschia palea. The test species were exposed to the test pesticide for 72 hours and the toxicity represented $EC_{50}$ value calculated by the reduction in growth rate at 72 hours. The toxicity of EC or EW formulation to green algae and diatom was higher than the toxicity of GR formulation at all test in this study. Also, the toxicity of EC formulation was higher than the toxicity technical pesticide. These results indicate that the types of pesticide formulation may affect on their toxicity on algae and the green alga, S. capricornutum and S. subspicatus were more sensitive than C. vulgris. Also, the sensitivity of the diatom, N. palea showed equal or lower than S. capricornutum, S. subspicatus but more sensitive than C. vulgris.
To obtain antimicrobial algae against fish pathogenic bacteria, we screened 80% methanolic extracts of 30 algae using fish pathogenic bacteria, Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Edwardsiella tarda and Vibrio anguillarum. Among them, Corallina officinalis, Dumontia simplex, Gloipeltis furcata, Grateloupia lanceolata and Grateloupia turuturu were effective for growth inhibition of a Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus sp.. Sargassum thunbergii and Polysiphonia morrowii exhibited significant inhibitory effects against the growth of Gram-negative bacteria, both E. tarda and V. anguillarum. Moreover, antimicrobial activity-guided fractionation for P. morrowii extract yielded significantly active 90% methanolic fraction. This fraction significantly inhibited the growth of E. tarda exhibiting a MIC of 1 mg/ml. In addition, its antimicrobial activity was stable under various pH conditions.

Concerns about how ocean acidification will impact marine organisms have steadily increased in recent years, but there is a lack of knowledge on the responses of macroalgae. Here, we adopt an outdoor continuous-flowing mesocosm system designed for ocean acidification experiment that allows high CO2 conditions to vary with natural fluctuations in the environment. Following the establishment of the mesocosm, five species of macroalgae that are common along the coast of Korea (namely Ulva pertusa, Codium fragile, Sargassum thunbergii, S. horneri, and Prionitis cornea) were exposed to three different CO2 concentrations: ambient (×1) and elevated CO2 (2× and 4× ambient), over two-week period, and their ecophysiological traits were measured. Results indicated that both photosynthesis and growth exhibited species-specific responses to the different CO2 concentrations. Most notably, photosynthesis and growth increased in S. thunbergii when exposed to elevated CO2 conditions but decreased in P. cornea. The preference for different inorganic carbon species (CO2 and HCO3−), which were estimated by gross photosynthesis in the presence and absence of the external carbonic anhydrase (eCA) inhibitor acetazolamide, were also found to vary among species and CO2 treatments. Specifically, the two Sargassum species exhibited decreased eCA inhibition of photosynthesis with increased growth when exposed to high CO2 conditions. In contrast, growth of U. pertusa and C. fragile were not notably affected by increased CO2. Together, these results suggest that the five species of macroalgae may respond differently to changes in ocean acidity, with species-specific responses based on their differentiated photosynthetic acclimation. Understanding these physiological changes might allow us to better predict future changes in macroalgal communities in a more acidic ocean.
Enclosure experiments to reduce the growth of Cyanophyceae were carried out using plants in Kyongan stream. Wet plants put into the enclosure at a rate of 2.5 g wet wt/l and at that time, the average concentration of chlorophyll a was ranged from 30 to $50\;{\mu}g/l$. The dominant species was Microcystis aeruginosa. Ginkgo, big cone pine and pine needles significantly inhibited the growth of Microcystis from the early days to the stages of log-Phase. Waterchestnut was the most inhibitory to the growth of Microcystis. Pine needles inhibited in 85% of the algal growth: ginkgo in 80%; big cone pine in 75%; waterchestnut in 78%; wildrice in 59%; and iris in 30%. At the treatment with 0.25 g dried plants/l, algae was declined at a rate of 90% by waterchestnut: 53% by pine needles. Phenolic compounds were purifled from decomposing big cone pine and waterchestnut.
This study was performed to assess the clay impact on alga growth which was a primary producer, in view of food chain in ecosystem. As clay minerals caused turbidity, a low sedimentation, high adsorption capacity with organic matter, adsorption - desorption effect with ionic chemicals, clay minerals were supposed to have a significant effect on the aquatic system. In study we tried to turn out NOAEL (No-observed-adverse-effect-level) of clay materials on the algae growth inhibition using such as kaolinite, sericite and montmorillonite. This study was indicated. (1) In both of kaolinite and sericite, the $72hr-EC_{50}$ of them shows 2,752 mg/L and 2,775 mg/L, respectively. (2) On the other hand, in the case of montmorillonite, the $72hr-EC_{50}$ is not shown a significant difference to that of control samples. (3) It can be explained that is also a very important parameter in an alga growth. Because an alga growth was increased when the permeability of W visible radiation was increased in all clay cases. (4) It is demonstrated alga growth was affected by the characteristics of clay materials. Hence we can assess the $\ulcorner$water environmental risk assessment caused clay materials$\lrcorner$ using the alga growth inhibition level indirectly.

The 10 species of marine green algae was collected from Jejudo(Island) in Korea. Methanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared and screened for inhibition activities against tumor cell growth. Of the tested samples, the sea staghorn (Codium fragile) aqueous extract (CFAE) showed the highest activity on CT-26 cell growth. Therefore, CFAE was selected for further experiments and the possibility to induce apoptosis by the CFAE was investigated. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that it dose-dependently increased apoptotic cells with hypodiploid DNA contents in CT-26 cell line. These results indicated that CFAE can suppress the growth of CT-26 cells through apoptosis. The CFAE decreased the protein expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL and led to the activation of caspase-3 and -7. A crude polysaccharide was separated from CFAE and it mainly constituted with 61.2% galactose and 30.5% arabinose as analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Methanolic and aqueous extracts of 26 red algae species collected from Jeju Island coast were prepared at a high $(70^{\circ}C)$ and a room temperature $(20^{\circ}C)$ and were examined for their cytotoxic activity against 4 tumor cell lines: U-937 (human monoblastoid leukemia cell line), HL-60 (human promyelocytic leukemia cell line), B-16 (murine melanoma cell line) and HeLa (woman cervical carcinoma cell line). $20^{\circ}C$ methanolic extract of Polysiphonia japonica showed cytotoxic activity of over 50% against U-937, HL-60 and B-16 cells. On the other hand, the $20^{\circ}C$ aqueous extract of Scinaia okamurae and $70^{\circ}C$ aqueous extract of Chondrus crispus showed cell growth inhibition activity of more than 50% against HL-60 and B-16 cells. The highest cytotoxic activity was observed in the $20^{\circ}C$ aqueous extract of Scinaia okamurae against B-16 cells (80.55%).
The effect of silver ion solution on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2388 (cyanobacterium) and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 (green alga) was investigated using separated and mixed culture in filtered natural water and BG11 medium. In separated culture, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 were found to be sensitive to 0.01 and 0.1 mg L$^{-1}$ of silver ion, respectively. Also, the silver ion concentrations for the growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 in the mixed culture were same in separated culture. Cyanobacteria were more sensitive to the silver ion solution than green algae. In bloom sample, the minimal inhibition concentration of silver ion solution for the low Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (110$\sim$190 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) and high Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (1,500$\sim$1,900 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) was about 0.1 and 3.0 mg L$^{-1}$, respectively. The silver ion concentration for the inhibition of algal bloom sample was affected by the algal biomass. In order to use silver ion solution for the control of algal bloom, the silver ion concentration must be determined in consideration of a minimal effect on the environment.
