  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of air pollution on the street trees in Seoul. Ten Gingko biloba street trees were selected in both Jongno(polluted area as a control) and Yangjae(non-polluted area) to investigate chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzymes such as APX(Ascorbate peroxidase) and GR(Glutathione reductase). The sampling, measurements and analysis were conducted in August. Chlorophyll contents and photosynthesis of Gingko biloba grown in Yangjae were higher than those of Jongno in the August measurement. In contrast, APX and GR activities of Gingko biloba grown in Yangjae were lower than those of Jongno. The observed tree responses are considered to be atypical compensatory response to polluted locations.

  • This study was attempted to quality characteristics of ginseng powder using molecular press dehydration(MD) method. Ginseng powder was dried using maltodextrin as dehydrating agents, and the quality of the ginseng powder was compared with that of freeze-drying and hot air-drying samples in terms of colors, moisture contents and grain size. The colors of ginseng powder using MD-drying and freeze-drying was better than hot air-dried ginseng powder. The moisture contents of ginseng powder using MD-drying was 9.49%, while freeze-drying was 4.14% and hot air-drying 11.71% after 72ball mill times. The grain size of ginseng powder using MD-drying and freeze-drying was better than hot air-drying ginseng powder. These results suggest that drying of ginseng powder using molecular press dehydration method is very efficient, because minimal cell destruction may be achieved.

  • It is well-known that the scenic visibility achieved in our naked eyes is related with the quality of aerosol condition which is composed of primary and secondary air pollutants. In recent, the IMPROVE organization in U.S.A. has developed two algorithms to estimate the visible length depending on the elements of air pollutant. Using these algorithms, we are to represent the condition of aerosol quality with the well-known scenic images of the observing area so that any one that have no sufficient chemical knowledge may feel and understand the level of air pollution in visuality.

  • This paper is to provide a method to prevent air loss of the concrete using reject ash based ternary blended aggregate due to absorption of AE agents by reject ash by adding AE agents into reject ash before mixing concrete. Test results indicate that air loss due to presence of reject ash in ternary blended aggregate can be recovered by over use of AE agents into aggregate directly before mixing.

  • Heavy metals(Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in tree rings of P. thunbergii growing at Onsan Industrial Complex of air polluted area were analyzed to study the condition of heavy metal pollution. The tree ring width began to decrease after operation of factories and decreased abruptly at Onsan Industrial Complex after 1991. Cd contents in tree rings showed 119.4ppb to 867.0ppb level and suddenly increased after 1991. Cu contents showed 309.5ppb to 3686.8ppb, and Pb contents 911.33ppb to 7997.1ppb and fluctuations of those were high after operation of factories. Zn contents showed the highest level of 3528.7ppb to 23826.7ppb and largely ascended after 1960, and increased suddenly after 1992, as compared to former tendency. On the other hand, heavy metal contents in tree rings of P. thunbergii at Gosung of non-air polluted area were far lower than Onsan I. C., and there was a wide difference between both areas after 1990. On the heavy metal contents accumulated in bark of P. thunbergii of both areas, it was higher to 10 times in Cd, 1,000 times in Cu, 285 times in Pb and 133 times in Zn contents at Onsan than at Gosung. In the heavy metal analysis for circle plate and cores, heavy metal contents in cores were generally higher than those in disk and Pb contents showed specially high difference, but pattern of variation by tree age showed a similar tendency.

  • To increase the shelf-life of domestic peach, peaches were treated with hot air ($46^{\circ}C$) for 0~9 hours and the changes in the major components contents and antioxidative activities were investigated. Ascorbic acid content of the control and hot air treatments were 13.81 mg% and 11.73~14.16 mg% respectively, however, there was no significant difference between them. The contents of polyphenols of the control and hot air treatments were 22.64 mg% and 19.03~23.19 mg% respectively, but there was no significant difference between them. The contents of polyphenols of the control were slightly lower than those of hot air treatments during storage. Also the contents of flavonoid were not significantly different among the control and hot air treatments. The detected free sugars of the control and hot air treatments were fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose. Among the free sugars detected, sucrose content was the highest and free sugar content did not change during storage periods. Furthermore, antioxidative activities were not different among the control and hot air treatments.

  • Strength and compressibility characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil (LWFS) are experimentally investigated in the paper. LWFS is composed of the dredged soils, cement and air foam to reduce unit-weight and to increase compressive strength. For these purposes, both unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out fer artficially prepared specimens of LWFS with various initial water contents, cement contents, mixing ratio of silty dredged soils and different confining stresses. The experimental results of LWFS indicate that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by cement contents rather than intial water contents of the edged soils. In this paper, the normalizing scheme considering the ratio of initial water contents, cement contents, and air foam contents has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and a normalized factor.

  • Many people interested in indoor air quality monitoring since they spend a majority of their time indoors such as homes and offices. This paper proposes the effective indoor air quality monitoring system and it can gauge carbon dioxide, particulate matter and VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) which can be harmful to humans. The proposed system is composed of three main modules which are device, web server, and mobile application. In order to evaluate the performance, we tested two cases which are candle and smoke. We monitor the condition of indoor air quality with our mobile application. Also, we developed the information graphics to compare the condition of air quality between indoor and outdoor and this mobile application improves usability.

  • With the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization, air pollution has become increasingly serious, and the pollution control situation is not optimistic. Climate change has become a major global challenge faced by mankind. To actively respond to climate change, China has proposed carbon peak and carbon neutral goals. However, atmospheric pollutants and meteorological factors that affect air quality are complex and changeable, and the complex relationship and correlation between them must be further clarified. This paper uses China's 2013-2018 high-resolution air pollution reanalysis open data set, as well as statistical methods of the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) to calculate and visualize the design and analysis of environmental monitoring big data, which is intuitive and it quickly demonstrated the correlation between pollutants and meteorological factors in the temporal and spatial sequence, and provided convenience for environmental management departments to use air quality routine monitoring data to enable dynamic decision-making, and promote global climate governance. The experimental results show that, apart from ozone, which is negatively correlated, the other pollutants are positively correlated; meteorological factors have a greater impact on pollutants, temperature and pollutants are negatively correlated, air pressure is positively correlated, and the correlation between humidity is insignificant. The wind speed has a significant negative correlation with the six pollutants, which has a greater impact on the diffusion of pollutants.
