  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performances of zero-valent iron (ZVI) combined SBR (Z-SBR) process in decolorization and organic removal of synthetic dye wastewater. The batch test for optimizing the operation parameters of ZVI column showed that the appropriate EBCT was around 11 min and the pH of the dye wastewater was below 7.0. During the step increase of influent color unit from 300 to 1,000cu, about 53 to 79% decolorization efficiency could be achieved in control SBR (C-SBR, without ZVI column), which resulted from destroying azo bond of synthetic dye in anaerobic condition. For the same influent color loading, Z-SBR showed always higher decolorization efficiency than C-SBR with an aid of ZVI reducing power. The TCOD concentration in Z-SBR effluent was 20-30mg/L lower than C-SBR effluent although the TCOD before and after ZVI column was nearly same. It means that breakdown of azo bond by ZVI reducing power could increase biodegradability of synthetic dye wastewater.

  • In this study, we constructed a database of dyeing concentrations of all reactive dyes used for dyeing linen according to the thickness of the linen fabric and attempted to improve the reproducibility of the dyeing process for the commercialization of linen fabric materials. Linen fabric is a natural cellulose material that is comfortable and suitable for eco-friendly trends. It is a typical summer material with excellent breathability and thermal conductivity, quick moisture absorption and dissipation, and a cool touch. Dyeability and fastness were evaluated depending on the thickness of the linen fabric using a monochlorotriazine (MCT) reactive dye and bifunctional yellow, red, and blue dyes. All three colors of the MCT reactive dye and bifunctional dyes exhibited a darker shade as the fiber thickness of the marker increased. Fastness to washing was excellent at grades 4-5 or higher, regardless of the color of the dye and the number of linen fabrics. Although some color-fastness differences were noted, with the color change occurring most frequently with blue color, the fastness variations with dye type were mostly similar. The results of this study are expected to facilitate the selection of reactive dyes according to the thickness of the linen fabric based on the basic data from the laboratory, which will aid in the mass production of linen fabric and benefit the fashion industry.

  • It has been known that the natural colorants exhibit good dye-uptake toward cotton, silk, and wool fibers, while they do poorly toward synthetic fibers. This study utilizes the chitosan treatment in order to improve the dye-uptake for the natural fibers and to enable the synthetic fibers, whose dye-uptake levels are low, show better affinity toward the natural colorants. Since chitosan has $-NH_2$ group and -OH group in the structure, the dyeability of the fabric will be improved when the fabric is treated with the chitosan. Cotton fabric as one of the natural fiber fabrics and nylon fabric as one of the synthetic fiber fabrics were selected for this study. 1. In case of cotton fabric, the chiosan treatment takes effect for the Caesalpinia sappan and cochineal, resulting in remarkable ${\Delta}E$ increase after dyeing. Chitosan helps in developing dark shade by increasing the uptake of the Caesalpinia sappan and cochineal. It does not, however, participate in the developing of the specific color as does a metallic mordant. 2. In case of dyeing cotton fabric with Gardenia jasminoides, the effect of the treatment with mordant and chitosan is not very pronounced. It is thought that the Gardenia jasminoides uptake is accomplished in a direct manner in the cellulose chains without the aid of mordant. 3. Air-permeability is decreased when the non-mordanted and non-chitosan treated cotton fabric is dyed with Caesalpinia sappan, cochineal, and Gardenia jasminoides. 4. In case of nylon fabric, premordanting and chitosan treatments are not highly effective in promoting the dye-uptake.

  • It is well known that Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is an attractive material for its various applications. ZnO has been mostly used as a transparent conducting oxide in liquid crystal displays, solar cells due to its advantages of low cost, high productivity, and excellent electrical conductivity. Notably, flexible-dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates require low temperature sintering processing conditions. Therefore, low temperature processing conditions have been strongly required for transparent conducting film applications. In this paper, we prepared low temperature-sintered ZnO ceramics employing Li as a sintering aid.

  • The bond strength of three types of $TiO_2$ coatings onto fluorine-doped $SnO_2$ (FTO) glass was investigated with the aid of a tape test according to ASTM D 3359-95. Transmittance was then measured using an UV-vis spectrophotometer in the wavelength range of 300 nm to 800 nm to evaluate the extent of adhesion of $TiO_2$ nanorods/nanoparticles on FTO glass. A sharp interface between the coating layer and the substrate was observed for single $TiO_2$ coating ($TiO_2$ nanorods/FTO glass), which may be detrimental to the bonding strength. In multicoating sample ($TiO_2$ nanorod/$TiO_2$ nanoparticle/$TiO_2$ nanoparticle/FTO glass), the tape test was not performed due to severe peeling-off prior to the test. On the other hand, the dual coating sample ($TiO_2$ nanorod/$TiO_2$ nanoparticle/FTO glass) showed minimum variation of transmittance (4%) after the test, suggesting that the topcoat adheres well with the FTO substrate due to the presence of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticle buffer layer. The use of a $TiO_2$ nanorod electrode layer with good adhesion may be attributed to the excellent dye sensitized solar cell performance.

  • Background: Preauricular sinuses represent a common congenital abnormality in children. Classically, a preauricular sinus manifests as a small opening, usually near the anterior limb of ascending helix. The difficulty in the surgical treatment of preauricular sinus is the high recurrence rate. The aim of this article is to review the outcomes of preauricular sinus and to introduce our surgical technique and its prognosis. Methods: A single-institutional retrospective review was performed for all patients who had undergone excision of congenital periauricular sinus between October 2007 and April 2014. Medical records were reviewed for demographic information, wound complication, and recurrence rate. The sinus tract was visualized with the aid of preoperative dye instillation and intraoperative probe insertion. The skin next to the sinus opening was incised elliptically, and the tract itself was dissected medially to the end of the sinus tract and posteriorly to the cartilage of the ascending helix. Results: The review identified 44 patients for a total of 57 preauricular sinus tracts. The mean age at time of operation was 16.3 years with a range from 9 months to 65 years. Unilateral preauricular sinus tract was present in 31 patients (11 right and 20 left preauricular tract), and 13 patients had bilateral sinus tract. None of the patients had experienced wound issues postoperative, and there were no recurrent sinus tract formation or infection. Conclusion: Using a combination of dye instillation, probe insertion, and modified dissection, we were able to achieve a recurrence free series of preauricular sinus tract excision among a heterogenous group of patients. A large patient series is necessary to replicate the results of this study.

  • The effects of colchicine on the plasma elimination and biliary excretion of various organic anions in rats were examined. Elimination of indocyanine green (ICG) or rose bengal (RB) from plasma was significantly delayed when rats were treated with colchicine (3 mg/kg body weight) 3 hr prior to the administration of the dye. On the other hand, disappearance of sulfobromophthalein (BSP) or bromophenol blue (BPB) from plasma was not influenced by colchicine. The plasma disappearance and biliary excretion of organic anions were kinetically analyzed based on a compartment model, in which the deep compartment and the unknown disposition are incorporated. The transfer rate constants of ICG or RB, $k_{23}$ (from the liver to the deep compartment) and $k_{3B}$ (from the deep compartment to the bile), were decreased by colchicine, but those of BSP or BPB were not changed. A mechanism for the decrease in the $k_{23}$ and $k_{3B}$ values for ICG and RB might be explained by a inhibition of colchicine to the intracellular cytoskeleton. The hepatocellular distribution of RB or BPB was then determined. BPB mainly distributed to the cytosolic fraction, but RB distributed to each hepatocyte organelle. Taken together. it was suggested that ICG or RB is transported through hepatocytes into bile with the aid of the cytoskeleton, whereas BSP or BPB is handled by hepatocytes in a different way.
