  • Architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architectonics: proportion, symmetry, color, harmony and so on. Among those the architectural design theory is significant, since it affects the aesthetic evaluation of human perception. This paper gives an outline in applying the traditional design principles of architecture to contemporary architecture by 'unification through similarity' of architectural components such as form, scale, texture and color. As we see from this research, unification can be achieved in a design by the combination of the four components; that is, to balance between the four above-mentioned components in buildings, through the similarity of one or more of these components.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the Dart Manipulation with good fitting and evaluate the aesthetics of Dart Manipulation that is used in the designs of the original tops for women in their 30's. Subsequently, it suggests dart manipulation with good body fitting and physical fitness when designing original tops. The findings of this study are as follows. First, in the fitting of Dart Manipulation for different body types, cross direction Dart Manipulation received good marks in the Square Body Type while mixed direction and diagonal direction Dart Manipulation received high evaluation in the Standard Body Type. Also, for the Reverse Triangle Body Type, mixed direction Dart Manipulation received high marks. Since there are only small changes in fitting for the Square Body Type, the position of Dart Manipulation should be determined in regards to the aesthetic view as well as the fitting of the Standard Body Type and Reverse Triangle Body Type. Second, in the fitness of Dart Manipulation for different body types, an approach from the aesthetic view should be considered for Square Body Types because of the differences in fitness according to the position of dart manipulation. The fitness should be considered when positioning Dart Manipulation for the Standard Body Type and Reverse Triangle Body Type because of these differences. Third, for the greater variance of drop for these different body types, the change of the amount of dart received lower evaluation in fitting since the amount of dart increased when the dart was located higher than B.P. The number of dart should likely increase when gathering or tucking is necessary when there is an excessive amount of dart in Dart Manipulation for the different body types. Fourth, as for the changes of wrinkles in accordance with the body type, wrinkles were likely to be formed at the breast or neck area when there was a larger difference in drop. To prevent such problems, one more dart should be made on the wrinkle. In conclusion, the study suggests designing the original top with a better look and comfort by setting the balance between aesthetics and fitting in the design stage.

  • Purpose: Materials for ear reconstruction are autogeneous cartilage and artificial implants. Despite their potential for donor site complications, autogeneous cartilage frameworks remain the accepted standard for external ear reconstruction. The purposes of this study were to investigate our ear reconstruction cases for 12 years. Methods: During twelve years from January 1996 to December 2008, 70 patients visited our hospital for ear reconstruction of microtia. Among them, 65 cases used autogenous cartilage frameworks, 3 cases used tissue expander and 2 cases used artificial implants. We investigated sex & age, common site, combined malformation, operation methods & their complications, donor site & their complications, anterior chest wall deformity and aesthetic evaluation. Results: Males were affected more often than females. Male to female ratio was 1.8 : 1. The common site of microtia was right ear (72%). And hemifacial microsomia was the most common associated congenital malformation. Surgical techniques included Tanzer-Ruecker method, Tissue-expander and Artificial framework ($Medpore^{(R)}$). Incidence of complication was higher with Tissue-expander & artificial framework than with Tanzer-Ruecker method. But There are few reports of using Tissue-expander & artificial framework and there was no acceptable statistical difference. And costal cartilage was harvested in ipsilateral side and anterior chest wall deformity reported only 2 cases under 10 year-old patients. Other minor complications reported such as, wound disruption and chest wall scar, but without any serious complications. Aesthetic result was evaluated by surgeons and patients for postoperative satisfaction and clinical evaluation. Conclusion: In ear reconstruction of microtia patient, delicate surgical strategy is important for natural shape and maintenance of postoperative contour. However, many methods were introduced for reconstrucion of microtia, the authors reconstructed an auricle in Tanzer-Ruecker method, Tissue-expander and Artificial famework ($Medpore^{(R)}$) for 70 patients. In our study, we generally chose Tanzer-Ruecker method and this treatment modality was satisfactory for patients and the postoperative result was acceptable for surgeons.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the landscape image and visual preference for ridges of the Seongpanak district at Mt. Hallasan. For this, the evaluation of the artificial and natural landscape is compared through the medium of color slides. Data is analyzed through the descriptive statistics and spatial image is analyzed by factor analysis algorithm. Principle component analysis and Varimax Method are applied to extraction and factor rotation respectively. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : General visual imagesthe Seongpanak district at Mt. Hallasan are clean, beautiful and attractive. The degree of visual preference increased commensurately with the lower rate of artificial factors. Landscape Factors covering the spatial image are found to be 'aesthetic value', 'spatial scale', 'natural quality', and 'topography' factor, which account for 57.6% of the total variants. The aesthetic value variable is the most important factor in visual preference and the unnatural factors are found to present negative elements with visual preference.

  • This study assumed two key parameters that describe smoothness. Previously, the number of studies that defined smoothness with the concept of curvature has been limited. The parameters were the two physical characteristics of curvature: the number of waves and the amplitude of them. The purpose of the study was to observe which of the two parameters influences the perception of smoothness and to examine the relationship between the sense of aesthetic beauty and smoothness. The visual stimuli used in the study were transformed three-dimensional spheres, based on the combination of the three levels of the two parameters of nine distinct conditions. We analyzed the three responses that measured the preference of each visual stimuli, the familiarity score, and the smoothness evaluation score, each with the linear mixed model whose fixed effects were the two parameters and random effects were the participants' individual differences. Nearly the eighty percent of the variance of the smoothness evaluation score was explained by the linear model with the two key parameters and their interaction. The physical characteristics of a viewed object were far more significant than individual differences such as personality factors and the manner of art appreciation. In conclusion, the study examined the perception of smoothness based on the change of the physical characteristics of a shape. The study further recognized the relationship between smoothness and the aesthetic preference. No significant influence of the participants' individual difference such as gender, the degree in fine arts, personality factors, and the manner of art appreciation was observed. The amplitude of waves, rather than the number of them, was far more significant to the perception of smoothness.

  • This study aims at evaluating the characteristics and the preference on the sign design in the industrial heritages space. The research were performed by the process of literature review, case study, and survey of questionnaire. Seven industrial heritage space in Korea and China regenerated as art and cultural space after 2000 were selected and evaluated by 6 criteria including integrity, continuity, simplicity, aesthetics, legibility and historic aspects. The findings were the following. First, the six criteria factors were evaluated as the similar scores in the assessment of 7 sites without extremity. Simplicity was the highest score while historicality was the lowest one. It means that the characteristics of the sign systems of the heritage sites were focused on the simple, contemporary and effective design. Second, integrity, continuity, aesthetics, legibility were evaluated as the medium score in the sign design. While, in the evaluation on the aesthetics the score differences were comparatively high. Sanhai M50 which got the highest score showed the integrity of contrast using yellow and grey color with minimal design. However, Sanghai M50 got the lowest score in the historic aspects and was evaluated as the most favorite sign design in the preference. It means that the historic aspects have no direct relationship with the preference for the sign design. It shows that the effectiveness with integrity and the aesthetic aspects are considered more importantly than the application of the historic identity of the site in sign design.

  • Selecting a suitable place is to determine the attributive conditions and qualified areas for the aim as factors and is to be fulfilled systematically for selecting the area which satisfies all these. This research tries to achieve a rational suitability analysis of residential development using the GIS modeling method and the hierarchical analysis process. A spatial and attributive analysis has been systematized for selecting a suitable place for the study and GIS analysis model has been used for the effective conclusion drawing for different levels. As a next step, a quantitative and qualitative evaluation index was created through complex consideration of the criteria and decision factors of the location selection, and weights were added depending on the relative importance of these factors. In particular, 3D terrain model simulation method has been used in order to reflect the aesthetic factors of the scenery which is an element of the subjective evaluation factors and considered qualitative and subjective evaluation factors which were not considered for the existing AHP technique. After the research, a location that satisfies complex requirements was found rapidly and accurately through the GIS model and hierarchical analysis.
