  • Questionaires on symptoms of respiratory disease have been used in Korea to elicit the probable health effects of air pollution in epidemiologic studies: The objectives of such studies often include comparing prevalence of symptoms of respiratory system between different population groups or between the same population groups, at different times. Unfortunately, little attention has, been paid to standardization of those questionaires, whether those are Korean. versions or not. Furthermore, no attempt to develop Korean ,questionaire on respiratory symptoms and relevant information has been made. Followed by 'a comparative study on responses to Korean version questionaires(English origin) of CMI, MRC, and ATS-DLD-78' two types of questionaires on respiratory symptoms and relevant information for Korean adult, which are short form (SUN-81-AS) and long forms (optional questions are added to the short one, SUN-81-AL), have been designed suitable to Korean background by authors (see Annex). The self-administered and closed-question questionaire were tested their validity and reliability by administration to l80 normal adults (medical and nursing students) and 60 clinical patients of Seoul National University Hospital, with spirometric exam. The results obtained and conclusions drawn are as follow: 1. It took less than 10 minutes to complete the questionaire SNU-81-AS and SNU-81-AL. 2. The test-retest reliability of each questions in AS and AL ,were observed as 92.7% and 92.1%, respectively. And all of the level of agreement are statistically significant with kappa statistic. 3. In addition to higher prevalence rate of symptoms in patients group compared, with, normal. group, the correlations between FEV 1.0/FVC predictive value(%) and number of symptoms were statistically significant inpatients group (See Fig. 1 and, Table 7). 4. The answer rate to optional questions in AL form among those who are not to do was about 10%, while the no-answer rate among who are to do was about 15% in Normal (medical and nursing students) group. 5. From the viewpoints of validity and reliability, the new Korean questionaire (SNU-81-AS and AL) developed by authors are to be recommendable to use in epidemiologic studies on respiratory illness in Korea. The self-administration, however, of optional questions in AL form may not assure the quality of data gathered.

  • This study was carried out to identify the Important modifiable risk factors for reduced bone mass and to construct prediction model which can classify women with either low or high bone mass. Through the literature review, individual characteristics such as age, body weight, height, education level, family history, age of menarche, postmenopausal period, gravity, parity, menopausal status, and breast feeding period were identified and factors of life style such as past milk consumption, past physical activity, present daily activity, present calcium intake, alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, coffee consumption were identified as influencing factors of reduced bone mass in women. Four hundred and eighty women aged between 28 and 76 who had given measurement bone mineral density by dual energy x-ray absortiometry in lumbar vertebrae and femur from July to October, 1997 at 4 general hospitals in Seoul and Pusan were selected for this study. Women were excluded if they had a history of any chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, hyperthroidism, & gastrointestinal disorder and any medication such as calcium supplements, calcitonin, estrogen, thyroxine, antacids, & corticosteroids known affect bone. As a result of these exclusion criteria, four hundred and seventeen women were used for analysis. Multiple logistic regression model was developed for estimating the likelihood of the presence or absence of reduced bone mass. A SAS procedure was used to estimate risk factor coefficient. The results are as follows For lumbar spine, the variables significant were age, body weight, menopause status, daily activity, past milk consumption, and past physical activity(p<0.01), while for femoral Ward's triangle, age, body weight, level of education, past milk consumption, past physical activity(p<0.001). Past physical activity, present daily activity and past milk consumption are the most powerful modifiable predictors in vertebrae and femur among the predictors. When the model performance was evaluated by comparing the observed outcome with predicted outcome, the model correctly identified 74.1% of persons with reduced bone mass and 84.5% of persons with normal bone mass in the lumbar vertebrae and 82.9% of persons with reduced bone mass and 75.0% of persons with normal bone mass in the femoral Ward's triangle. On the basis of these results, a number of recommendations for the management of reduced bone mass may be made : First, those woman who are classified as high risk group of the reduced bone mass in the prediction model should examine the bone mineral density to further examine the usefulness of this model. Second, the optimal amount of milk consumption and a regular weight bearing exercise in childhood, adolescence, and early adult should be ensured.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sociocultural attitude toward appearance, social pressure, and stress on university students' body figure discrepancy. A total of 363 students were recruited from a university in C and A city. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from Oct 27 to Dec 9, 2016. Statistical analyses of the collected data were conducted using SPSS 20.0 and consisted of descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. A positive relationship was observed between body figure discrepancy and female's sociocultural attitude toward appearance (r=.406, p=.006), peer pressure (r=.197, p<.001), parental pressure (r=.176, p=.002), and stress (r=.218, p<.001). Body figure discrepancies increased with peer pressure (${\beta}=.159$, p=.007), stress (${\beta}=.186$, p=.002), and BMI (${\beta}=.186$, p=.002), and these factors accounted for 10.9% of the body figure discrepancy. To reduce body figure discrepancy, it is necessary to develop health education and promotion programs that enable university students to manage weight and stress for health maintenance and to have positive self-assessment without being hurt by other people's view or evaluation.

  • This study identified vitamin E associated with metabolic syndrome and metabolic syndrome components among Korean adults aged over 19 years. Secondary data from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for this study. Data from 6,425 were analyzed by logistic regression analysis using a complex sample procedure. As a result of logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio was increased in the group with high vitamin E levels compared to the group with normal vitamin E levels. There are metabolic syndrome (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR]: 1.889, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.550-2.303, p<.001), abdominal obesity (AOR: 1.444, CI: 1.205-1.730, p<.001), hyperglyceridemia(AOR: 3.182, CI: 2.641-3.835, p<.001), systolic blood pressure (AOR: 1.711, CI: 1.446-2.026, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (AOR: 1.806, CI: 1.521-2.144, p<.001), low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (AOR: 1.558, CI: 1.060-2.290, p=.024). Therefore vitamin E was associated with metaboic syndrome and metabolic syndrome components. So when providing nursing intervention for people with metabolic syndrome, education on vitamin E should be actively included.

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify dietary factors related to metabolic syndrome in middle aged Korean men who were participants in the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV) in 2007. Methods: The study targeted 361 of the 709 men aged between 40 and 64 years for a final analysis; the other 348 surveys had incomplete data which did not allow for the determination of metabolic syndrome. The definition of metabolic syndrome was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III(NCEP ATP III). Results: There were significant differences in the metabolic syndrome of middle-aged men according to age, smoking pack-years, and number of resturant meals per week. Dietary factors such as vitamins, riboflavin, natrium, carbohydrate, protein and lipid intakes were not significant. Conclusions: It was verified that metabolic syndrome in middle-aged men is related to age, smoking pack-years and number of resturant meals per week. Dietary factors were not significantly related. However, further detailed studies in this area are needed.

  • This study examined the serum lipid levels according to the obesity indices, and obtained the relationship between obesity indices and serum lipid levels among adults who underwent a health checkup in a university hospital. The subjects for this study were 4,112 adults aged 18 to 77 years who underwent medical examinations at the health center of a university hospital in Daejeon city from Jan 2012 to Dec 2013. The serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) and obesity indices (height, weight, waist circumference, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) of the study subjects were surveyed from self-recorded questionnaires and medical examination charts of the hospital. As a result, the serum lipid levels (TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, AI) of the study subjects were increased significantly with higher level of obesity indices (WC, body fat rate, BMI, WHR WSR) in both sexes. The TC, LDL-C, TG, and AI showed that positive correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes, but HDL-C was negatively correlated with the WC, body fat rate, BMI, and WSR in both sexes. The above results suggest that the obesity indices and the serum lipid levels are closely related, i.e., the serum lipid levels increase with increasing obesity indices.
