  • Pistachio shell (Pistacia vera) (PS), a low-cost material, has been utilized for the removal of the Cr(VI) ions after treatment with citric acid. Batch experimental steps were applied to obtain Cr(VI) ion adsorption details for the equilibrium between Cr(VI) and modified pistachio shell (MPS). The influences of contact time, pH, adsorbent dose and initial chromium concentration on the adsorption performance of MPS was investigated in detail. The results displayed that adsorption of Cr(VI) by MPS reached to equilibrium after 2 h and after that a little change of Cr(VI) removal efficiency was observed. The sorption percent is higher at lower pH and lower chromium concentration. Two possible mechanisms for reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can be suggested in Cr(VI) removal. In the first mechanism, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) by surface electron-donor groups of the adsorbent and the reduced Cr(III) forms complexes with adsorbent or remains in the solution. This Cr(III) is not adsorbed by adsorbent at pH 1.8. But in second mechanism, the adsorption-coupled reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) occurred on the adsorbent sites. The equilibrium sorption capacity of Cr(VI) ion after 2 h was 64.35 mg/g for MPS.

  • Cadmium (Cd) adsorption by the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ranged from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, more Cd was adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP dose causes an increase of the ion exchange potential in HAP sorbent. Kinetics and equilibrium studies were investigated in series of batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fit to the equilibrium data and Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. The simple kinetic model, the pseudo first order kinetic model and the pseudo second order kinetic model, were used to investigate the adsorption. The adsorption reaction of Cd followed the pseudo second order kinetic model, and the adsorption pseudo second order kinetic constants ($k_2$) increased with increasing initial HAP amounts onto activated carbon. Also, intraparticle diffusion model was used to investigate the adsorption mechanism between adsorbate and adsorbent in the aqueous phase. Surface adsorption reaction and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously Cd adsorption mechanism from aqueous phase in this study.

  • The adsorption behavior of nitrate nitrogen was investigated from aqueous solution using char prepared from oak chip. The removal rate of nitrate nitrogen was found to be dependent on temperature and it is increased as the temperature increase. Adsorption equilibrium data of nitrate nitrogen on oak char. reasonably fitted Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption energy obtained from D-R model was 12.5 kJ/mole at $20^{\circ}C$ indicating an ion exchange process as primary adsorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}G^o$, ${\Delta}H^o$, and ${\Delta}S^o$ were -23.76 kJ/mole, 26.1 kJ/mole and 89.7 J/K mole at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, indicated that the nature of nitrate nitrogen adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic.

  • Adsorption kinetics of aqueous ferric ion ($Fe^{3+}$) onto bio-natural rice grains (BRG) have been studied in a batch system. The influence of contact time (0-180 minutes), the dosage of BRG adsorbent (10, 20, 40, and $60gL^{-1}$), and ambient temperature (27, 37, 47, and $57^{\circ}C$) for the adsorption system have been reported. The equilibrium time achieved after 20 minutes of adsorption contact time. The maximum removal of ferric ion is 99% by using $60gL^{-1}$ of BRG, $T=37^{\circ}C$, and $50mgL^{-1}$ ferric ion solution. Adsorption kinetic and diffusion models, such as pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and Weber-Morris intra-particle diffusion model, have been used to describe the adsorption rate and mechanism of the ferric ion onto BRG surface. The sorption data results are fitted by Lagergren pseudo-second order model ($R^2=1.0$). The kinetic parameters, rate constant, and sorption capacities have been calculated. The new information in this study suggests that BRG could adsorb ferric ion from water physiosorption during the first 5 minutes. Afterward, the electrostatic interaction between ferric ion and BGR-surface could take place as a very weak chemisorptions process. Thus, there is no significant change could be noticed in the FTIR spectra after adsorption. I recommend producing BGR as a bio-natural filtering material for removing the ferric ion from water.

  • The removal characteristics of As and Se ions from aqueous solution by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) modified anthracite (HTMAB-AT) were investigated under various conditions of contact time, pH and temperature. When the pH is 6, the zeta potential value of anthracite (AT) is -24 mV and on the other hand, the zeta potential value of the HTMAB-AT is +44 mV. It can be seen that the overall increase of about 60 mV. Increasing the (+) potential value indicates that the surface of the adsorbent had a stronger positive charge, so adsorption for the anion metal was increased. The isotherm data was well described by Langmuir and Temkin isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 7.81 and 6.89 mg/g for As and Se ions from the Langmuir isotherm model at 298 K, respectively. The kinetic data was tested using pseudo first and pseudo second order models. The results indicated that adsorption fitted well with the pseudo second order kinetic model. The mechanism of the adsorption process showed that adsorption was dependent on intra particle diffusion model according to two step diffusion. The thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}G^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) were also determined using the equilibrium constant value obtained at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was physisorption, and also an endothermic and spontaneous process.

  • In this experiment we investigated the influence of various anions including oxalic acid encountered as solution phase in soil on the adsorption and desorption of sulfate in Chungwon Bt soil. The effect of chloride and nitrate on the adsorption of sulfate was not significant, suggesting that sulfate was better able to compete for adsorption sites at concentrations studied, in contrast to the large reduction in the amount of chloride adsorbed in the presence of sulfate. The results of competition for sorption sites between sulfate and anion showed that the simultaneous presence of two anions in solution was effective in reduction of competing anion at a maximum value of adsorption, due to the similar adsorption mechanism for anion competition. Therefore, the variation in the buffer power of the acids will produce a change in the strength and amount of adsorption and the competitive ability.

  • Radionuclides such as Cs and Sr were removed from dilute aqueous solutions by means of inorganic adsorbents, 13X and chabazite. The physical adsorption obeyed the DA equation and non-equilibrium dynamic adsorption model, which describes surface diffusion mechanism with the DA equation, simulated the adsorption behavior of cesium and strontium on zeolite in fixed bed adsorbers. The dynamic model simulated the adsorption behavior of cesium and strontium.

  • The interaction between berberine and tannin in aqueous solution was investigated spectrophotometerically. The dyeing mechanism of silk fabrics (control and tannin treated silk fabrics) with berberine was based on thermodynamic parameters obtained from equilibrium adsorption experiments. In adsorption spectra of aqueous solution of berberine and tannin mixture two isosbestic points (328nm, 357nm) were found and the mole fraction of reaction of components was 1:1. Initial dyeing rates were increased and the diffusion of dye was more effective by tannin treatment. Without regard to tannin treatment the adsorption isotherm of berberine was the langmuir type except high temperature, 80℃. By tannin treatment the saturation dye uptake was increased, the increase of dye uptake appeared to be a result of entropy change rather than enthalpy change. All these results can be interpreted by the hydrophobic interaction between berberine and silk treated with tannin and it is reasonable to conclude that not only the ionic force, but also the hydrophobic interaction contributes to the binding of berberine and tannin treated silk treated with tannin.

  • This study aims to evaluate arsenic adsorption efficiencies over various metal oxides (CeO2, TiO2, Fe3O4, ZrO2, AlOOH, SiO2, α-Al2O3, and γ-Al2O3) and investigate the correlation between physico-chemical characteristics of metal oxides and their efficiencies. From XPS, XRD BET analysis and isotherm adsorption test, TiO2 powder showed that the best adsorption efficiency, and it's mechanism was highly depended on the chemical adsorption.
