In the present study, we compared the adsorption capacity of Pb (II) from contaminated water of used cardboard (UC) and a commercial powdered activated carbon (PAC), the latter has been characterized by different techniques, namely X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), wavelength dispersion x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and surface area B.E.T analyzer. The effect of various parameters, such as the pH, the contact time, the amount of adsorbent, and the temperature on the adsorption of Pb (II) on both materials was investigated. The Pb (II) adsorptions are perfectly described by a pseudo-second-order model, while the intraparticle diffusion is a decisive step after the first minutes of contact. The fit to the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models seems perfect for these adsorption reactions. (PAC) showed a greater affinity for Pb (II) compared to (UC) and the adsorption of Pb (II) ions is strongly pH-dependent, on the other hand, the increase in temperature doesn't have much influence on the two solids. This study showed that the capacity of (UC) to adsorb Pb (II) from an aqueous solution is greater than two-thirds of that of (PAC).

Fluoride removal by acid and heat treated red mud were studied in batch and column system regarding contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and filter depth. The results showed that acid treated with 0.8 M HCl, had highest adsorption capacity of fluoride and adsorption capacity decreased as heat treatment temperature increased. Sorption equilibrium reached in 30 min at a initial concentration of 50 mg-F/L but 1 h was required to reach the sorption equilibrium at the initial concentration of 500 mg-F/L by 0.8 M acid treated red mud (0.8 M-ATRM). Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 23.162 mg/g. The fluoride adsorption decreased as pH increased due to the fluoride competition for favorable adsorption site with $OH^-$ at higher pH. Removal percentage was increased but the amount of adsorption per unit mass decreased by adding the amount of 0.8 M-ATRM. It was concluded that the 0.8 M-ATRM could be used as a potential adsorbent for the fluoride removal from aqueous solutions because of its high fluoride adsorption capacity and low cost.
The technology of fluidized bed to use dry sorbent can be new technology that reduce the operating cost and make efficient operation. Therefore, this study investigated $CO_2$ control by dry sorbents with operating variables in a fluidized bed, compared with fixed bed for $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and pressure drop, and presented the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of activated carbon, molecular sieve 5A, molecular sieve 13X, and activated alumina. As the results of this study, the basic data could be achieved for operation of fluidized bed process, and fluidized bed process presented relatively high $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and low pressure drop with the increase of gas velocity. In addition, molecular sieve 5A showed 1.1~3.0-fold later breakthrough point and 1.1~2.7-fold higher adsorption capacity than the other dry sorbents.

To study the lipid adsorption characteristic of chitosans with different molecular weights and the degrees of deacetylation, in vitro test and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic analysis have been performed for the measurement of lipid adsorption characteristics of chitosan. The degrees of deacetylation in chitosans were $70{\%},\;85{\%}\;and\;92{\%}$ at different deacetylation times (1 hr, 2 hrs, 3 hrs), respectively. The molecular weight of each chitosan was controlled by enzymatic hydrolysis, and then the molecular weight of the chitosan was 4 kDa. The bulk density, water holding capacity and fat binding capacity of each chitosan powder were $96.2-504.0{\%},\;374.4-1217.9{\%},\;and\;307.0-659.3{\%}$, respectively. The higher molecular weight of chitosan was exhibited the lower bulk density and the higher water and fat binding capacities. Bindinf capacities of chitosan powders to bile salts, cholesterol and linoleic acid were $41.2-63.3{\%},\;40.8-67.4{\%},\;42.6-72.6{\%}$, respectively. In NIR spectrum of lipid adsorbed chitosan the occurrence static eletronical binding between chitosan and lipid was identified by NIR spectrum peak induced from combination of carboxylic group in lipid and amino group in chitosan. In conclusion, the higher degree of deacetylation and molecular weight of chitosan showed the higher lipid binding capacity and the lipid adsorption of chitosan were occurred by combination of carboxylic group in lipids and amino group in chitosan.
Adsorption of heavy metals by sawdust was investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of using sawdust to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Kinetic and isotherm studies were carried out by considering the effects of initial concentration and pH. The adsorption isotherms of heavy metals fitted the Langmuir or Freundlich model reasonably well. The adsorption capacity of metal was in the order $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$. A high concentration of co-existing ions such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ depressed the adsorption of heavy metal. Adsorption data showed that metal adsorption on sawdust follows a pseudo-second-order reaction. Kinetic studies also indicated that both surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion were involved in metal adsorption on sawdust. Column studies prove that sawdust could be effective biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous phase.

A study on the removal of heavy metals using alginic acid, a kind of polysaccharides, was performed. Alginic acid adsorbed 480 mg Pb/g dry mass at pH 4, which was about twice as high as uptake capacity of other biosorbents. Isothermal adsorption curve for lead ions was described by the Langmuir model equation and the experimental data well fitted to model equation. The adsorption of lead ions was an endothermic process since binding strength increased with temperature. The effect of alkali metal ions ($Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) on lead sorption capacity was negligible and most adsorption process was completed in 30min. The uptake capacity of other metals such as, copper, mercury, strontium, and cesium ions using alginic acid was also investigated.
Fe(III)-impregnated activated carbon (Fe-AC) was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II). To investigate the stability of Fe-AC at acidic condition, dissolution of Fe was studied with a variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4. Fe-AC was unstable at pH 2, showing a gradual increase of the dissoluted Fe as reaction time increased, while negligible amount of Fe was dissoluted above pH 3. This stability test suggests the applicability of Fe-AC in the treatment of wastewater above pH 3. Adsorption capacity of Cu(II) onto activated carbon (AC) and Fe-AC was investigated in a batch and a column test. In the adsorption kinetics, rapid adsorption of Cu(II) onto AC and Fe-AC was noted at initial reaction time and then reached a near complete equilibrium after 6 hrs. Adsorption trends of Cu(II) onto AC and Fe-AC were similar, showing an increased Cu(II) adsorption at higher pH. Compared with AC, Fe-AC showed a greater Cu(II) adsorption over the entire pH range studied in this research. From the adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the concentration of Cu(II), the maximum adsorption capacity was identified as 61,700 mg/kg.

This study explored the feasibility of calcium-rich food waste, Mactra veneriformis shells (MVS), as an adsorbent for phosphate removal, and its removal efficiency was enhanced by the thermal activation process. The CaCO3 in MVS was converted to CaO by thermal activation (>800 ℃), which is more favorable for adsorbing phosphate. Thermal activation did not noticeably influence the specific surface area of MVS. The MVS thermally activated at 800 ℃ (MVS-800), showed the highest phosphate adsorption capacity, was used for further adsorption experiments, including kinetics, equilibrium isotherms, and thermodynamic adsorption. The effects of environmental factors, including pH, competing anions, and adsorbent dosage, were also studied. Phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 reached equilibrium within 48h, and the kinetic adsorption data were well explained by the pseudo-first-order model. The Langmuir model was a better fit for phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 than the Freundlich model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of MVS-800 obtained via the Langmuir model was 188.86 mg/g. Phosphate adsorption is an endothermic and involuntary process. As the pH increased, the phosphate adsorption decreased, and a sharp decrease was observed between pH 7 and 9. The presence of anions had a negative impact on phosphate removal, and their impact followed the decreasing order CO32- > SO42- > NO3- > Cl-. The increase in adsorbent dosage increased phosphate removal percentage, and 6.67 g/L of MVS-800 dose achieved 99.9% of phosphate removal. It can be concluded that the thermally treated MVS-800 can be used as an effective adsorbent for removing phosphate.

Cu and Cr as a base metal and Pt, Pd as a supportive metal were selected for improving adsorption capacity of activated carbon fiber in eliminating especially targeted VOCs. Preparing variables such as metal loading, loading temperature, loading hours and kinds of loaded metals were changed. Properties measurement was carried out by SEM (scanning electron microscope), XRF (x-ray fluorescence analysis) and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer) and adsorption capacity evaluation were also performed by gas analyzer. Under this study, the adsorption capacity of complex metal loaded activated carbon fiber was improved positively than that of single metal loaded activated carbon fiber. And we found that the best conditions for metal loading were 5 hours loading time at $100^{\circ}C$ and the adsorption capacity was enhanced almost double compared with other condition based activated carbon fiber. Cu-Cr-Pt-Pd loaded activated carbon fiber showed the best adsorption capacity. Also we confirmed that more than 0.5 second is necessary for adsorbate diffusion and adsorption over activated carbon fiber.

The purpose of this study is the evaluation of adsorption capacity of casts for heavy metals comparing with the activated carbon. The casts was obtained from vermicomposting of the mixed organic sludges which were generated from the treatment facilities for leather wastewater and cattle wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of cast was investigated. Also, the batch adsorption experiments of cast and activated carbon for heavy metals were carried out, and the results were analyzed by Freundlich isotherm. The buffering capacity to the acidic wastewater was founded in the cast, and the cation exchange capacity of cast impling adsorption capacity for soluble substances was evaluated as about 55me/100g. Those were implied that the cast have a large potential as a good adsorbent for soluble pollutants in wastewater. From the results of batch experiments, the removal efficiencies of tested various heavy metals including Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr were very high value as 89-98% for the activated car-bon, and 80~95% for the casts except for Zn. The adsorption equilibriums for the two materials were achieved within 90 minutes. The order of preferable metals in the adsorption was found to be Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr>Zn on the cast and to be Pb>Cd>Cu>Cr>Zn on the activated carbon, respectively. From the above results, it might be con-cluded that cast is effectively available as a good adsorbent to treating the heavy metal bearing wastewater.
